| Abdul Rehman Make-up artist | Meet Abdul Rehman. He is the man behind the faces that adorn the famed Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. From the traditional looks of Tulsi (Smriti Malhotra-Irani) to the modern ones of Tanya (Rakshanda Khan), Rehman has given a make-over to every artist on the sets of this Balaji Telefilms production.
This Charkop resident started off as a make-up artist with Balaji Telefilms seven years ago. ~{!0~}My dad used to supply costumes for film stars and I have grown up watching the stars. That~{!/~}s why I wanted to be a part of the glamour business,~{!1~} says Rehman.
That~{!/~}s why after working for serials such as Hum Paanch, Bandhan and Captain House (on DD1), Rehman began working with the Kyunki team. ~{!0~}Today I do about 10 make-ups daily,~{!1~} says the 24-year-old Rehman who learnt the skill under NH Juker, the person-in-charge of the serial~{!/~}s make-up.
| Abdul Rehman transforms Gauri Pradhan to Kyunki~{!/~}s Nandini Virani | After seven years, an experienced Rehman takes approximately 25 minutes to do up each face. ~{!0~}Otherwise, it takes at least one hour for make-up artists who don~{!/~}t have too much experience,~{!1~} he admits.
Ask him if the make-up he does is a tad unreal and he is quick to retort, ~{!0~}Actors need to look good on television and hence their original look has to be accentuated. They have to look different from real people.~{!1~}
Rehman~{!/~}s make-up tricks give that perfect shape and colour even to ordinary faces. ~{!0~}The camera is very sensitive and catches any little imperfection on the face. With make-up we can even disguise double-chins and excess weight on the face,~{!1~} he says.
Rehman also feels that even though he tries to provide a genuine look sometimes he has to compromise. ~{!0~}Even young actors sometimes have to play the roles of mothers and grandmothers. I can~{!/~}t make them look too old otherwise they won~{!/~}t be cast in younger roles,~{!1~} he explains.
So what is it like to make-up men? ~{!0~}We just give the men a tanned look. There is nothing beyond that for men as far as make-up is concerned,~{!1~} says Rehman.
Now, Rehman wants to explore make-up possibilities beyond television. ~{!0~}I want to do make-up for cosmetic companies. I don~{!/~}t want to do make-up for films as most actors have their own make-up people. Besides, there isn~{!/~}t work on a consistent basis. As of now, I just want to work hard and earn a name for myself,~{!1~} says Rehman. Rehman~{!/~}s make-up tips Rehman says the eyes and lips are two most important features on any face.
Here are a few tips on how to accentuate them:
Make-up for the eyes
For big eyes
Apply kajal evenly on the eyes. It makes the eye look slightly smaller.
People with big eyes should avoid putting eyeliner. It makes the eyes look larger.
For small eyes A white or light blue pencil on the upper and lower lids will make the eyes look slightly bigger and more attractive.
Make-up for the lips
For full lips
People with full lips should not apply dark shades and should avoid using a dark lip-liner it makes the lips look more prominent.
A light gloss makes fuller lips look thinner.
For thin lips
If the lips are very thin, you should apply a liner a little above the natural lip line and use a darker shade.
A medium dark shade such as a brown looks good on thin lips. Four of Rehman~{!/~}s favourite stars Apara Mehta She plays Savita Virani in Kyunki...
~{!0~}Apara has a straight-cut face. You don~{!/~}t have to put in too much work to apply make-up on her. I like doing up her simple looks,~{!1~} says Rehman. Rakshanda Khan She plays Tanya in Kyunki...
~{!0~}Her face is a blend of the modern and the traditional. It is always very interesting to do make-up for Rakshanda,~{!1~} says Rehman. Gauri Pradhan She plays Nandini Virani in Kyunki...
~{!0~}Gauri~{!/~}s is a very sweet and simple face. I don~{!/~}t like to give her anything dramatic,~{!1~} says Rehman.
Smriti Irani She plays Tulsi Virani in Kyunki....
~{!0~}I have seen her looks evolve from that of a young girl to a mother. Even though she has put on weight now, she still holds her charm,~{!1~} says Rehman.
