CABLE BLOCKADE: IT'S BLESSING IN DISGUISE FOR STUDENTS

Mysore, Oct. 3 (DN&ACP)- Whoever called the ubiquitous television set an 'idiot box' must be biting their tongues with the same idiot box wearing a blank face as the cable operators have gone on strike snapping off connections to thousands of homes in city. Surprisingly, except for the TV addicts, viewers are a relieved lot as they can indulge in other activities like reading and having enough time to talk to family members leisurely without the idiot box gluing them into it.
This was the opinion of the majority of the people when Star of Mysore spoke to a section of them to find out what impact did the 'to be or not to be' game being played by the city cable operators had in their daily life.
Most of the students, covered in the survey, were of the same opinion that they have ample of time now to concentrate on their studies.
"When cable TV was in service, there was an urge to switch on the set and watch programmes. But, now I can get time to study and in this situation, I can study well and pass out in first class," was the expression of S. Geetha, a computer engineering student of Karnataka Regional Institute of Engineering (KRIE).
Ramesh, a resident of Devamba Agrahara, had this to say: "If other essential services are hit, we will have to face inconvenience and difficulties. Not with the cable TV going off the air. At least now, I have time to read good books."
While this is one side, the housewives are bored as TV was the only form of entertainment for them after their husbands and children leave home. "I am really bored now, do not know how to pass time. When husband goes out for work and kids to school it is difficult to manage the time, being alone at home without television," a housewife in T.K. Layout, Nalini Prabhakara Rao Shinde, said.
V.V. Puram's Uma Krishnakumar says it is the best thing happened to family lifestyle. "Before, we never used to get time to sit together and talk family matters as TV was interfering. Now, life is relaxed," she said.
Some retired persons were really worried when they said they are having a tough time as the time has come to a standstill and were of the view that at least news channels should have been spared.
A housewife in Vijayanagar said she cannot imagine a day without having to indulge in TV serials. "I feel odd if I miss even one episode of Kyunki Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi..." she said, not before her husband quickly intervened and, after asked about his opinion, said, "I feel the most relaxed person now Kyunki, hum bhi kabhi aaram the.."
However, there is a section of the society which has escaped the heat of the strike. They have installed DTH at their homes with investment less than Rs. 5,000 and are getting unhindered telecast ignoring the strike.

You too can get a DTH easily within a day. The Doordarshan has published details of DTH and the list of dealers in Mysore and elsewhere on its website www.ddindia.com
