Child marriages on a rise in the country: Maneka Gandhi

The government on Friday raised concerns over prevalence of child marriages in the country which has shown an increasing trend in last three years.

In her written reply to a question in Lok Sabha, Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi said that the National Crime Records Bureau data for three years from 2011 to 2013 shows an increasing trend in child marriages.

The minister said, 222 cases of child marriage was reported in 2013, 169 in 2012, while 2011 had recorded 113 such marriages in different parts of the country.

"Government of India is concerned about the prevalence of child marriages in the country and put in place necessary legislation viz. Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 to tackle the problem," Ms. Gandhi said.

Responding to another question, the Minister said, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has registered 31 complaints of exploitation and abuse of children in protection homes and child care institutions including orphanages between 2011 and 2015.

Ms. Gandhi also said five complaints have been received in the ministry since 2012 regarding sexual exploitation of women inmates in Swadhar Homes and trafficking of women and children.

In the light of this fact, the emphasis on child marriage is still relevant and BV is doing some social service by focussing on this vexatious issue again and again. Not all child marriages end in fairytale situations though.

BV is not doing any social service by this serial. Child marriages do not happen the way they show. And the consequences also are hard to believe. They will do social service if they can show something closer to reality. This cute girl with all the make up does not looks tortured at all. If they have guts - show the real face and real consequences - undernourishment, scarred face and body large number of children, high child and maternal mortality etc. etc.

I think they showed something like that when Jamna died during childbirth. And also Gehna's rape.
And also Gehna's sisters steeped in poverty and looking like beggars.

They showed Phooli, Sugna, Asha and others who were not exactly Katrina Kaifs.

BV is not a documentary. It is a daily soap. So they will take some poetic liberties to entice some sections of viewers.

The message is important. And the focus is also necessary however botched up they are.

Why bitter pills are sugar coated? Otherwise it is difficult to swallow them.

Jamna somehow did not even looked a child bride. Yes she died during childbirth - but what was - ma aur bachche me se ek ko hi bacha sakte hai? Seriously has anyone heard this dialogue in real life? And they repeated it again with Gahna and then Ganga. Gahna was not even a child bride because she was 18. Phooli and Asha were widows and looked like a widow alright. Sugna always used make up till Pratap's death - but that is OK because she was living with her parents who were well off. Gahna's sisters and little Gauri looked like real villagers.

I do not find any message in BV. When the tormentors become the only family for their lead - when she is sharing the horror of her daughter's child marriage with her balak-var and he is reassuring her - what message anybody can get in this? It is not a bitter pill to cure anything - it just a regular story in the garb of messages - all the messages are just to show more and more horror - nothing constructive.

They did show Champa Anandi's friend who was a little older than her dying in child birth.
I think that Champa was barely 13 or 14 years old when she gave birth to Gulli.

Then Anandi's neighbours in Bilaria Krishna Kaki that girl in her family has become infertile after pregnancy complications and her sasuaral wale sent her off to her maika - That was the consequence of pregnancy at an early age.

Gehna's sisters looked so poverty stricken and Gehna was the only asset so they sold her off for a better life for other children.

Gauri's child marriage was annulled but the society thye lived in never accepted that.Gauri was still considered as dusri lugayi by the socciety and her parents. Gauri instead of fighting it off succumbed to it.

They showed through Suguna - how a girl who is kept at home idly can fall prey to all kinds of attractions and end up as teen pregnant even before gauna happened.

I think a lot off issues were tackled.

They showed quite a few through Anandi and Ganga's stories too.

Obviously they will dress up the stories to make them look attractive since they are in the business of making money by telling stories.

If the reality is presented without sugar coating like that DOCUMENTARY which is making news the chances are that the reality will never get to see light.

Now all thanks to this they have good excuse to back up the illogical way they came up with to show Nandini's child marriage😛😆

They are not excatly doing social service but they have a very good excuse to milk the cash cow called Balika Vadhu.

Agree that this show does raise a lot of debate through the way they show things.
