I don't believe an idea itself can be truly original. Everything is a derivative work like that. It's when you use it to create or propose something, that's when the "originality" comes into the picture. It's the same thing with intellectual property. I may have this totally original idea for a story but unless I put it to paper, or some other tangible medium, I cannot claim to have any right on it.

I believe the same, as noted by many it's a matter of perspectives rather than facts because new idea are rarely tied to the work of just one person but then there are always exceptions. The truth is in order to create new idea, we first must venture outside of those that we have already been originated and possibility of us doing that is rare.
