No...they don't!! At least for some fortunate or unfortunate souls, depends on the way you look at them. The deeper the hurt, the drier the eye!!
Is it numbness?? Is it shock?? What is the name of this emotion that stuns your heart, kills your mind, leaves you unable to feel or think anything?? Shouldn't there be a medical term for this kind of death ?? Cause death it is, when you feel dead inside.
The moment when she says those words..his eyes!! The first disbelief, the incredulity, the am I hearing this right look !! No, this can't be happening...the denial!! So shatteringly mirrored in those eyes that were supremely happy just a heart beat before...And then comes the ...pain!! The bitter disappointment, the shock, the sound of glass breaking into a thousand pieces...we know that sound..right??
What screams, what shrieks to me the most..is his silence. The stolid, stoic, silence. The wall of quietness that he instantly builds around himself. His distance and his aloofness from it all. Manik is far, far away. Not reachable, not approachable. He as no anger, hatred, bitterness, venom...its all a silent tomb. They might come later, may be, if she manages to break the stony ice round his heart. He just refuses to react...be it to Nandini or his friends...he has locked himself up and has thrown away the key ...deliberately.
Manik, after all, is an expert at this, isn't he. Pain is no stranger, betrayal a companion he has always amused himself with. Being abandoned by loved ones feels so normal, rejected feels so natural!! This is one thing he is a past master at, hide your true feelings, never wear your heart on your sleeve,...the poker face. He is back!!
What does he feel...numbing betrayal, heart shredding disbelief, relentless unabating pain, what does one feel when your world comes to a standstill ...Nothing. He feels...nothing!!
The stiff body and the stiffer soul...even when his family questions him...silence!! Even when he knows the nightmare has ended, and he was free to go...no jubilation, no celebration (as if he cared, as if it mattered, where he spent the rest of his life)!! Be it his mother's taunts and jibes or his friend's relief and sheer joy, nothing did touch him. Their warm hugs, couldn't thaw the ice, he simply couldn't move to hug them back. Nothing reached him, except whenever that name was mentioned, some feeling returned. Whether she was called a back stabber, or stupid or...just that name elicited some response from some corner of a dead soul.
He wanted to be alone, simply alone, to just cry in peace, to sob and scream in private, not a soul needed cause he wanted to shed tears, tears that never come, tears that never flow, tears that are never easy for some!!
