Currently it is only Aamir Khan. That man's film PK broke records without any marketing at all. He just announces films and people trust him enough to watch whatever he gives. He is not bound to any image either unlike Salman and SRK.
In past and in respect/popularity of course there's Rajinikanth, Rajesh Khanna, Dev Anand, Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Hema Malini, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, Salman and SRK (latter two in recent past, not like seniors).
If you ask me, beyond acting if there has ever been the biggest stars ever in cinema, it is Mangeshkar sisters Lata and Asha. Unprecedented respect and popularity, longevity, songs playing everywhere. Actors, filmmakers, musicians came and went but these two stayed! Even now they run thriving businesses and their independent albums do well, Their longevity, body of work and popularity is simply unmatched by any other performing artiste India has ever seen.
They have quite an influence with government also and do lot of philanthropic work too.
They used to dictate their own terms. If their conditions were not met they would simply refuse to sing and not just filmmakers but even actors used to beg them to sing for them. Till date nobody dare call their name without "ji". They are also the only ones who scold or threaten someone in public and nobody can object. 😆 Ruling since 1940s! They themselves withdrew from Filmfare Awards in 90s so that new singers could get a chance to win. Stories of their monopoly are legendary! They would even dictate terms to male singers!
