Hey Aani,

Brilliant follow up to the start, loved the trepidations that both felt and loved that cute little awkwardness. I am musical person and I know so are you so I will share the song that came to my mind while reading part 2 of your story.

Ye shaam mastaanee, madahosh kiye jaaye
Muze dor koee khinche, teree or liye jaaye

Baat jab main karu, muze rok letee hain kyon
Teree mithhee najar, muze tok detee hain kyo
Teree hayaa, teree sharam teree kasam mere hothh siye jaaye

Yek ruthhee huyee, takadeer jaise koee
Khaamosh ayese hain too, tasaweer jaise koee
Teree najar, ban ke jubaan lekin tere paigaam diye jaaye

thanks a lot Doc for this sweet comment and this song, its one of my dad' favorites 😊

WOW Aani, just knowing the concept a little before you penned it entirely was exciting enough. Having read it makes me even more excited to read this whole story now.

I love the concept of this story. It's a time of despair since Ishita lost, but rightly its not necessary for her to win every time. And the fact that she lost but still has so much strength from her family is beautiful to read. She's hurt and at such time the concern of her family, especially daughter and Raman is heart touching. It's so Raman to vent his concern in the form of anger.

Raman's answer to Shagun was brilliant. Although said a bit boldly and unmindful of everyone being around him. It was more than necessary for not just Shagun to know but also for a more emphasized assurance to Ishita.

You're amazing with words Aani. You describe each feeling and emotion so vividly that it's almost like watching it play out.

I am so so glad you're writing again. Hope you find more inspiration to keep continuing. 🤗

Hey Anku 😊🤗

I have a thing to avoid cliches and good may win in the end...and should but it need not necessarily win always 😳 so I had a bit of a reality here - Shagun may have won the cup but there' no one happy for her, celebrating with her but everyone is concened about Ishita - despite not having a cup in her hand she is the one who is surrounded by people who are genuinely worried about her, who love her...in my opinion that kind of a defeat is far better than the victory which is hollow like Shagun' is here 😳

exactly the words are kinda bold but so needed - after all with the taunt she threw their way by bringing up the lack of intimacy between them she mocked them as a couple, their marriage as a relationship as if its a farce and because she has known Raman in the most primal way there is and has mothered his children she feels her power is stronger than anything - her hold on him still so persistent that even a year into marriage with Ishita...he has not yet made her his wife in the most absolute sense of the term...with this one situation he did the one thing that would more than make Shagun understand that she isnt just way out of line but way off the mark too

Comment for the second part.

I am in awe of this chapter, once again. And now more than excited to read the rest..

This chapter put light on Raman's feelings. His fear, his concern, his love and even the little embarrassment he feels on having boldly said something in front of the family.

The way you dealt with his feelings regards to Ishita's injury. His concern on seeing her hurt. Ishita's understanding comes into play here too when she on realizing his withdrawn and worried state used the best excuse to bring him out of it. Ruhi. The moment between them was just so the typical Bhalla family moment they always have even in the show.

I completely loved the part, and the way you're treating the story. Picking one situation after the other in the scenario.

Can't wait for more Aani, this was just BRILLIANT. And that's also an understatement.

Once again sorry for the delay :( I have a lot going on.

No need to be sorry Anku and thanks for the comment😊

Last chapter was Ishita' POV so I felt its only fair if we take a look at what Raman thinks and feels in this situation too 😳

Will update soon and thanks for saying that you find the pieces are fitting together 😃

Chapter 3 - Catching Fire.

"This is what it means to be loved... when someone wants to touch you, to be tender..."
Banana Yoshimoto, The Lake

"Her body existed only where he touched her. The rest of her was smoke."
Arundhati Roy, The God of Small Things

He looks away for a moment before he hesitantly whispers,

"I...I wasn't thinking clearly when I said that...only...only I..."

"It's okay Raman."

It took the stunned expression on her husband' face for her to realize she had spoken in a barely there voice to reassure him, she had actually said those words and meant them too.

His incredulous tone betrayed the extent of his surprise when he hurriedly asked her next,

"Really...are you sure? You aren't mad at me?"

The question coming from a husband to a wife might have been absurd for others but in their case, she knew what he meant and why. They may have been married for almost a year now, been in love with each other for a while and aware of the feelings being mutual but...but they have yet not managed to take the relationship to another level. The intimacy they have shared so far has been on an emotional level always...this...this is a new realm for them which has them both overwhelmed and slightly anxious of the moment.

The two occasions where they almost were at the verge of breaking the ice, rude interruptions came their way and another chance never presented itself after those. This sudden development therefore is as unexpected for Raman as it is for her and she can see thin beads of perspiration on his forehead giving him away.

She has no idea how she managed it only something gave her the strength to overcome her shyness as she spoke next to her husband to dissipate his doubts and reassure him.

"Why would I be mad at you Raman? You were right... I would prefer you over Shagun."

Her small soft whisper was all it took to ease away the tension on his face and that...that made all the difference to her. The flicker of doubt that seemed to lurk evident in his posture faded away with her assurance as he sat straighter, more assured, more relaxed than just a moment ago. A small smile starts playing on his lips slowly replaced by a mischievous one as he leans in close to her.

"Really would you now? I didn't know."

"Neither did I." She whispers hoarsely with a raw honesty in her voice.

"Then what changed?"

"Everything...everything has changed Raman... and."

"And...?"

He asks her with a plethora of emotions playing in his eyes, not knowing what she might say but somehow being aware her reply is vital, so vital to him, his heartbeats thunder in his chest as he awaits her for those brief seconds as she musters the courage to respond to him. Find the words to express that which he can read in her eyes clear as a day.

"And I don't want anyone to think this marriage is a compromise anymore. I don't want that anymore, we are real now...as real as it gets and that's the beginning and end of everything."

"Quoting Fitzgerald, Mrs. Bhalla now are we? Quite Impressive I must say."

"You a Gatsby fan?"

"I wouldn't call myself a fan...but why pick a line from a tragic tale? Ours has barely begun Ishita..."

"Gatsby isn't just about a tragedy Raman; it's also about the difference between illusions and reality. What you take away from it depends on who you relate with more - Gatsby or Nick..."

"And we are real."

"Yes."

With her whispered confession, a silence falls on the room as they process the profundity of their conversation.

Hesitantly, quietly Raman places his hand on her knee, the slight tremor of his hand being the only thing giving him away as he slowly, cautiously trails it up her thigh to her hip, their eyes tracing his slow movements.

The magnitude of the moment finally sinks in when his hand reaches the edge of her t-shirt as his fingers brushed against her skin for the very first time when he gathered the hemline to take the garment off.

The sound of her sharp breath drawn ricochets throughout the room or so she thinks as her eyes snap shut the next instant.

If she felt scorched by the touch earlier, she was on fire now as he gently lifted her t-shirt, exposing her to his gaze, the heat of his touch permeating her as his fingers brushed against her skin ever so gently.

She shivered involuntarily as his hands touched her midriff and noticed how her husband looked as caught in the trance of this moment as she was. The way he licked his lips and swallowed a gulp perfectly revealed to her he was as affected by this...by her as she was by him and his touches and with the realization something soared in her heart, something she didn't even realize was always awaiting quashing the doubts that were ready to raise their ugly heads.

She knows her husband is drawn to her; has felt his heated gaze on her. Since the day he commented on seeing her in that green outfit she has been on her guard and aware of his scrutiny. She had assumed he didn't even like her, could barely stand her; the feelings being mutual in the early days of their marriage, but those off-handed remarks became the start of something new for them, for her.

A man was keenly noticing her, keeping a track of her in every way possible and not just any man - her husband of all people. Detestable as he was to her in those days, she could not help it, could not brush aside the way his attention affected her. Sure he ridiculed her, taunted her but none of that mattered to her.

Her heart had fluttered as she had taken in the implications of his brusque remarks, he was attracted to her, aware of her; his eyes traced every curve of her body despite her dressing so plainly, garishly in fact unmindful of grooming herself back in those days.

It had been years since someone took notice of her as a woman; made her feel attractive, wanted, desirable, desired.

Living in Delhi, she could not escape leachy eyes of perverts; so even after her ex, it isn't as if she didn't exactly attract attention but none of that was wanted by her.

She didn't want to titillate, she wanted to belong. She didn't want to capture someone' imagination or his senses merely, she wanted to capture someone' heart and give him her' broken and fragile, may it be in return.

That day her husband unwittingly made himself that man for her; rituals had forged a bond between them but those remarks made her feel for the first time - she belonged to him, his attentions were welcomed, wanted if she was being honest with herself.

That day Raman Bhalla ensured his name wasn't just legally attached to hers, he made sure it was tattooed across her skin in invisible ink, paved the way for it to be branded across her heart and soul in due course of time.

How she slowly started dreaming about him and wanting them is something she' sure she can't put into words but ever since the process started she saw them here, in this moment someday and as she became sure he reciprocates her feelings, feels for her just as strongly her mind prepared conjured up the thoughts of this day.

The inevitability of it sank in her bones with each encounter they shared where she couldn't deny herself anymore, where she was sure he ached just the same for her.

However, nothing prepared her for the reality of her undisclosed fantasies. Nothing could come close to what she was feeling here right this second.

How she did not burst into flames as his fingers grazed against the swell of her breasts, she would never know but the heat of his touch would forever remain with her; the memory of it seared across her mind and soul, branded across her skin. As would the details like how in the instant her heart had skipped a beat, she had stopped breathing and from the looks of it, the same could be said for her husband.

It did not occur to her she would need to raise her arms to help him do the task, until he spoke hoarsely,

"Lift your arms Ishita."

She would never admit it verbally but her actions in the next instant were owing to the trance she found herself caught in, the trance he cast on her with his touch, the way his eyes traced her. Her inability to think made her forget the very reason that led them here, forgetting her injury on her elbow she lifted her arms and in the next instant screamed out as she felt a quick jolt of pain in her left arm, her shoulder throbbing with pain.

"Ishita..."

His hands left the garment he was trying to help her out off as he rose on a knee taking a half-standing position beside her as he towered over her.

Her eyes pooled with tears as the pain shot through her arm.

"Are you okay, you should have been careful you idiot, let me see."

Moving aside, her right palm curled over her left shoulder he moved the collar of her t-shirt aside to notice the area turning a mild shade of purple.

"It hurts Raman...it really hurts." She spoke through clenched teeth.

Brushing aside her locks he ran a loving hand over her head murmuring words of encouragement for a while finally calming her down and gave her a sip of water; only to have her slip into his arms again the moment he had kept the glass of water aside on the bedside table. With her head pillowed on his shoulder and his arms around her, she hushed to speak up against his shoulder.

"Ruhi lost because of me."

No sooner had the words left her mouth did she perceive a change in his posture as he froze for a second.

Before she could process how to precede, she felt the tremors of his body shaking with mirth and a moment later heard her husband' chuckle ring in her ears.

He pulled back enough to look at her with frustration, adoration and amusement warring in his eyes.

"You nearly broke your arm again today, are scratched almost all over your left side. Your foot is sprained and you were crying a moment ago and this is what you have to say even now - Ruhi lost! Good lord what am I supposed to do with you woman? What are you? I swear I am gonna lose my mind one of these days and it will be your fault when that happens."

"Ruhi wanted to win and I let her down. Can't I share this with you?"

She pouted once she was done, only to have him laugh harder as he rested his forehead against hers to whisper to her cupping her cheek,

"Silly woman you matter more to Ruhi and me than a stupid trophy ever will. So stop with the whining. Nothing matters to us more than you do, you get that in your head - nothing does. You are priceless to us Ishita."

He began with amusement and exasperation but finished with a quiet sincerity and before she knew it she was smiling, a smile so wide that the memory of her pain from a moment ago forgotten instantly. Instead, there was a sudden peace, a surge of joy emanating from her chest, so fierce, so strong she feared it would burst her heart and rip out of her right there and then.

The smile on her lips made it impossible for him to resist the lure of them that always attracted him and so he did what he had wished to do a million times and more.

Without further adieu, he eliminated the distance between them as he placed his lips upon hers taking his wife by utter surprise.

The dazed look on her face as he drew back conveyed she had not expected the kiss. The whisper of a touch had frozen her almost the instant he had pecked her and he didn't know if that was a good thing or bad.

Not wanting to ruin things by his haste he decided to speak up, to say something that would lighten the mood wondering if maybe he should have not been this spontaneous with his actions, he believed he could do that, just then he felt her right hand grab his collar stunning him into silence.

Time froze for the next few seconds or so it seemed until his wife gently drew him closer by the collar and claimed his lips with hers in a kiss.
