Chapter 20

Sammy walks into Apollo hospital at half eight in the morning, heading straight to the administration section. "Goodmorning", Sammy says to the hospital administrative staff, "I have come to settle the bills for Mrs Kalpana Ragav Singhania." The staff, Jayesh types Kalpi's name into the system and says in confusion, "sir her bills have been paid and she was released to her parents upon their insistence, against the doctors and hospitals advice." Sammy nods, not surprised, his suspicions confirmed. "Oh bless, my boss did not inform me", he says, attempting to cover his tracks. Giving an embarrassed smile he says, "could you give me a copy of the settled bill". Jayesh nods and prints out the bill and some extra documents. He gives Sammy the documents and says, "I have also printed the documents that Mrs Kamla Jhadav signed to absolve the hospital and the doctors from any liability should anything happen to Mrs Singhania health since she was taking her against their advice." Sammy thanks him and leaves.

Once in the car Sammy scrutinises the documents, looking for any clue to where Kalpi has been transferred. Seeing no information he sighs in frustration and decides it is best to go to the cops and have them head the investigation.

Three hours later a satisfied Sammy leaves the police station and heads for the office to check that everything is okay, frowning as he wonders what Ragav is doing. He calls Maya asking, "How is he?" Maya looks upstairs with a worried frown and replies, "He hasn't come down yet. I have never known him to sleep all morning. What should I do Sammy?" Sammy reassures Maya that all will be well as he walks into the office, freezes as he stares at the person several feet away from him, he whispers into the phone, "Uh Maya, did you go and check that Ragav is in his room." Maya replies in the negative and asks, "Why do you ask?" Sammy chuckles and says, "Because Ragav is at the office." Aghast Maya says, "No ways. I let myself in at five to eight, he must have risen very early."

Sammy hangs up and walks up to Ragav. Ragav looks at Sammy thunderously and yells, "Is this the time to come to work? It is half one, you can take the rest of the day off", turns and walks away. Sammy stands there stunned for he did not expect such a reaction from Ragav... he watches Ragav speculatively as he walks away, when Priya from reception says hesitantly, "Sir, don't mind him. He has been an unbearable ogre all morning. Nobody can do anything right." Sammy looks at Priya, thanks her and heads for Ragav's office.

Ragav sits on his chair, closes his eyes and massages his temple wishing he was anywhere but here... he had not realised how difficult it would be coming to the office and not seeing Kalpi... sighing he thinks, "Oh Kalpi... this morning I woke up thinking that I would easily get back to my old life... that what used to give me solace would continue to so so." He opens his eyes, looks out the window and says softly, "Kapi, work is no longer my solace... you are... I can't live without you... your absence is driving me insane..." Tears fall from his eyes, he continues talking to her, "Kalpi, how am I to live without you... I miss you so much... I see you everywhere... my heart hurts... I wish my heart stopped beating when yours did."

Sammy knocks before entering Ragav's office, giving him a moment to compose himself, should he need it. Sammy enters takes one look at Ragav and decides that he will not wait for an update from the cops... he shall share his suspicions right now. "Ragav", Sammy says softly, "There is something I want to share with you. Mind you, right now it is just my opinion... I have this gut feeling... I shall know more in the next few hours... but I can't wait, I want to share it with you now." Ragav nods and gestures for him to go ahead.

Ragav sits there in silence... frozen as he absorbs Sammy's words... stunned that he did not realise it for himself... his heart racing with hope for what Sammy just told him was plausible. Sammy watches Ragav, the change in his demeanour was amazing... seeing the spark of hope in his eyes... brought a huge relief, Sammy smiles weakly and says, "Officer Mehta should be calling me any time soon." Ragav looks at Sammy, his eyes gleaming with hope... speechless from the rush of emotions he is feeling... he nods, stands up... walks to Sammy and hugs him as he says hoarsely, "Thank you."

At half four in the evening, Officer Mehta calls Sammy and informs him that they have found Mrs Kalpana Ragav Singhania, he then proceeds to give Sammy the location. Ragav's joy knows no bounds as he and Sammy race to Serena Hospital where Kalpi was admitted under the name Kalpana Jhadav, no change in her medical status.

Ragav walks in, he has eyes only for his Kalpi. He walks straight up to her leaving Sammy to deal with the rest. He stands by the side of her bed, still, his gaze frozen to her face... drinking her in... afraid to blink should she disappear... he raises his hand to caress her face... he lays his trembling hand softly on her cheek as he trails her cheekbone and jawline with his fingertips... tears slowly giving way as reality sinks in that this is real... that she is in front of him... that she is alive... he whispers achingly, "I love you so much... promise me you shall never leave me." He bends towards her, pecks her lips, straightens up and says hoarsely, "I shall never let you go" as he entwines their fingers together... Ragav suddenly senses a slightly clench of his hand... it lasted for a split second.

"Doctor... doctor... ", Ragav calls out and proceeds to explain what he felt. "Kalpi try and press my hand again... please hun... I know you can hear me... try..." alas there was no reaction from Kalpi. Not losing hope, Ragav caresses her face with his other hand and says, "Take your time... I am not going anywhere... I shall be right here by your side waiting." Kissing her forehead, he says, "I missed you too."

Observing this, Vithal realises that Kamla and he had done wrong by Ragav again... that whatever twisted game Ragav was playing with them... he did love Kalpi. Sammy turns to Ragav and says, "Ragav are you planning to press charges against the Jhadavs and Kapoors." Ragav turns to look at Kamla maa, Vithal, Neetu and Sahil... his gaze no longer soft... no longer tender... no longer filled with love... he looks at them coldly and says, "Yes." He turns to the doctor and says authoritatively, "I want her moved into our home... make it happen."

Chapter 21

Ragav watches on possessively as the doctor and nurse sets up everything for Kalpi's care and comfort in the guest room. He turns to the doctor and says, "I expect a daily visit from yourself every morning and evening and a nurse to be present round the clock," his voice brooking no arguments. Once everything is organised to his satisfaction he asks to be left alone with his wife, leaving Sammy to deal with whatever other issues that might arise.

He walks up to Kalpi slowly, just stands by her bedside... Staring... Soaking in her presence. His heart beating with joy. "Oh Kalpi", he calls out softly, unconsciously, his anguish... His heartache... Calling out her name... Wanting to complain... To inform her... To share with her... His pain... Of what he went through when he thought she was no more... To tell her how important she is. He caresses her face, chocking up with emotion... He falls onto his knees, caressing her arm, he places his hand into hers... Tears fall as he lifts her palm and kisses it, chocking with emotion as he says, "I missed you so much. Please forgive me." He looks at her still form, smiles sadly and says, "honey come back to me... Please come back to me... Punish me... Hate me... But come back to me." Remembering what the nurse had told him at the hospital. He wipes his tears and says, "from now on, only happy conversations", and proceeds to remind her of the happy moments they shared together.

Suddenly he stops, he stares at her as fear cripples him, thinking, "am I the reason she refuses to wake up... My betrayal... My desire for vengeance and using her so callously... Oh my God..." Finding it difficult to breathe, he let's go of her hand and stands up, panicking he takes a step away from her as he realises that his voice... His touch... Their memories... Will only remind her of his betrayal... Of her pain. Uncertain and confused he backs away from her, his gaze fixed on her, bleak... Filled with anguish, bumping his back onto the wall. He drops himself onto the floor... Fresh tears falling... He sits there staring at her... Lost. For the first time in his life Ragav is lost... He does not know what to do. "I love you", he cries out, "please... Please..." Leaving his sentence incomplete... Helplessly he watches her realising that there is a huge possibility that his presence might do more harm than good.

He goes to Sammy and says coldly, "call the cops and take back the case and bring Kamla maa here to look after Kalpi." Sammy and Maya look at him in shock, unable to understand what is going on in his mind. Sammy asks softly, "are you sure?" Ragav nods, his gaze devoid of any emotion, he says, "inform Kamla maa that she will look after Kalpi during the day... And Maya... I expect you to be here watching her like a hawk."

*******************************************

Kamla and Vithal both wait for Ragav in his study... Both slightly apprehensive for Sammy had not really explained anything other than Ragav having dropped the case and Kamla maa to look after Kalpi. Both pray feverntly that Kalpi has not taken for the worse.

Ragav walks in, takes one look at Kamla maa and frowns as hatred begins to build up inside him. He looks at Kamla and Vithal coldly and says, "you are here and not rotting in jail because I do know the importance of having one's parent by one's side at the time of need. I am also giving you the opportunity to be by your daughter's side in her time of need because it is something you need too. However cross me one more time and I promise you... You will never see her again."

Kamla maa bursts out crying, relieved to hear that she will have the opportunity to nurse Kalpi to health... To be by her side. Vithal watches Ragav with a hint of affection, his eyes tearing as he is overwhelmed that Ragav would put Kalpi's needs before his own desire... Thinking this man can never harm my daughter... He loves her. Vithal is about to thank Ragav for his kind gesture when Ragav adds, "she is not to be informed of our marriage and once she is healed you can take her back to your home." Vithal and Kamla look on in confusion.

Ragav leans into his desk, looks coldly into Kamla maa's eyes and says softly, "your daughter has served her purpose. I no longer need her in my life." Affronted Vithal exclaims, "you married her..." Ragav raises his hand to interrupt him and says, "only to claim what is rightfully mine." Turning towards Kamla maa he continues angrily, "my inheritance." He turns back to Vithal and says, "After a year I shall file for divorce... So Kalpi does not need to know anything. Wait a year then marry her off to whomever you want."

Needing to be alone, ignoring the look of disbelief in their eyes, Ragav says dismissively, "you may leave... Sammy and Maya shall update you with the necessary." Once alone, Ragav allows himself to release the tears he held back, chocking as he replays the words he had spoken moments ago so harshly. "Oh Kalpi!" Ragav cries out in anguish, "I have made a mess of everything. Who would have thought that I Ragav Singhania would fall in love. And that too with Kamla maa's daughter", he adds in disgust.

His gaze falls onto his father's picture, he smiles wryly... Picks the frame and goes to sit by the window seat... Pouring his heart out to his father... About his love for a girl named Kalpi... About how she will hate him for the rest of her life. Hugging the picture as he cries, he says, "dad i have hurt her enough to last a lifetime. I cannot hurt her anymore. My presence in her life will always be that of a dark cloud on a sunny day." Strengthening his resolve he adds, "I want her happiness and if that means me being away from her than so be it." He looks into the picture and says with a sad smile, "soon it will be just you and I... Just like old times."

Closing his eyes as he hugs his father's picture... Tears streaming down his cheeks... His heart calls out... Bappa please make Kalpi not want to separate from me... Please make her not want to leave me... Please make her love me... Please Bappa... Please make her stay by my side, even if she is going to punish me and hate me for the rest of our lives... Bappa I cannot live without her... Folding his hands he silently pleads like a beggar, begging, bargaining with God to not let Kalpi leave him.

Chapter 22

Ragav quietly sits by Kalpi's bedside in the dead of the night, dismissing the night nurse... A ritual he began the very first night... Sitting silently by her side... Slightly away as he lets his fears rule him... The strongest being, when she wakes up she will leave me... She will want nothing to do with me. Quietly reflecting on what he had told her parents, he wonders that when push comes to shove will he be able to let her go... Will he stand by and watch her marry another... To move on with life without him... Confused he looks on... Part of him wanting to give her the choice to decide on their relationship... Part of him wanting to take the choice away from her, to demand that she spend the rest of their lives together. What started off as him being content to silently be in her presence soon changed with him interacting with her.

Several nights later, unconsciously caressing her hand, he sits by her side content as he talks to her... Updating her on her progress... Talking about his day... Always apologising and telling her how much he loves her... Of how important she is in his life. Gripping his hand lightly Kalpi says softly, her voice husky for having not spoken in so long, "Ragav, I hurt."

Ragav sits up as several emotions run through him... Happiness... Disbelief... Excitement.. as he thinks... Omg she knows I am here... Omg she is awake... Frowning as the words sink in... "Ragav, I hurt." He rushes to get the nurse, furiously demanding that she be given pain relief meds. The nurse ignores him and instead checks her stats, taking a torch she checks Kalpi's reaction to light first, quickly records her observation in a diary. The nurse then goes about checking the rest of her vitals and recording it on the chart. Five minutes later the nurse again checks Kalpi's sensitivity to light... Smiling she quickly records her observation in the same diary.

Ragav observes this with anger and confusion, but before he can berate her for not giving Kalpi pain relief meds, he nurse asks him to leave the room and wait outside until she calls him back. A good fifteen minutes later, Ragav quietly storms in, seething in anger as he sees the nurse smiling beamingly at him. He asks, "did you give her more pain relief meds?" She smiles and says, "no, there was no need, the bag is still half full." Before Ragav can react the nurse adds, "sir please continue doing what you were doing before." Ragav folds his arms across his chest and just stares at her, his expression clearly stating, "like hell!"

The nurse looks at him imploringly and says, "please sir, I have a theory that I want to test out." With a sigh Ragav sits on the chair next to Kalpi's bed and takes her hand in his... Then turns and gives a pointed look to the nurse. She flushes in embarrassment and whispers, "sir I shall be coming in to check her vitals every few minutes... Please don't... Stop whatever it is you do" and rushes out of the room.

After the nurses third visit, Ragav stops her from leaving by saying, "bring that chair and sit across me". Once she is seated, he says commandingly, "explain!" "Sir I think your wife can feel your presence when you are around and hears your voice... she fights to regain consciousness." Ragav just stares at the nurse, dumbstruck... Clearing his throat he says, "are you sure? Does the doc think the same? What? How? Is she out of coma?"

Grinning the nurse says, "stop sir" Ragav turns to look at Kalpi, his eyes brimming with hope, he places her hand on his heart... thinking, "does this mean my presence is not stalling your recovery... Oh Kalpi does this mean you want me by your side... Even after everything I did." "Sir... Sir..." The nurse calls his attention, "sir I have not shared my opinion with the doctor, because you requested that your visits to be kept just between us", reading the confusion in her eyes, Ragav just nods. The nurse continues, "these last few days I have observed that she is most responsive in the morning, just after your leaving her and gradually becomes less responsive to unresponsive during the day. Sir my aai says love is a very powerful emotion. Sir I think even in her unconscious state she is seeking you out."

Ragav looks at her in disbelief, then says, "what does medicine say?" Sheepishly the nurse says, "sir, A month and a half has past, the progress of her healing has been good... There is no more swelling in her brain..." Ragav interrupts, "so why are you giving my presence the credit?" The nurse looks into his eyes, and says firmly, "because she only responds to you." His eyes glaze with tears as her words sink in, he whispers, "and what about her pain... She said she hurts." The nurse frowns, shaking her head, answers, "your wife is on the drip... I don't understand...", stops, looks at Ragav, having heard bits of his conversation, she says softly, "maybe she is not referring to physical pain." Ragav nods and dismisses the nurse by saying thank you. As she leaves the nurse says, "sir she is out of coma. She is sleeping. I will inform the doctor in the morning."

Ragav climbs into bed with Kalpi, hugs her as he lay by her side and whispers in her ear, "I am never letting you go. You can fight me. You can scream bloody murder. But I will never let you go. I hurt you. I will heal you." In her sleep Kalpi murmurs, "okay."

chapter 23

Ragav walks into his office with a spring in his step and a twinkle in his eye. "Good morning sir," Priya says apprehensively as she tries to gauge his mood. Ragav grins and says, "it is a good morning, isn't it!" And walks into his office. Surprised by the change in his demeanour, she just nods and mentally thanks the Lord for this miracle.

Ragav stares out of the window, lost in thought, contemplating how to go about making Kalpi realise that deep down she does not want to leave him. With a sigh he thinks to himself, "with everything I have done there is only one way she is going to react. I need to get her to realise that that is not what she wants. What should I do?"

********************************

"Kamla maa, I have some good news" Maya says with a smile the moment Kamla walks in. Kamla maa takes one look at Maya and says, "my Kalpi is awake. Isn't she?" She laughs away, her joy knowing no bounds she walks towards Maya and hugs her tight. Maya hugs her back. Breaking their hug, Maya says, "she is out of coma, but she is sleeping right now. Come the doctor is waiting to explain what Kalpi might endure when she wakes up."

Excitedly Kamla maa tiptoes into the room, her eyes brimming with tears of joy. She stands by Kalpi's bedside just staring at Kalpi, who looked so peaceful in her sleep. Part of her is screaming for her to wake Kalpi while the part of her, the more sensible part tells Kamla to let Kalpi rest. She turns to the doctor and says anxiously, "what will happen now? Will my Kalpi be tired? Will she remember me... Everything? Will be be able to walk?" Not giving the doctor the opportunity to answer any of her questions, she continues, "I am sorry I am asking so many questions. It is just that I don't know anything about coma. All I know is that my baby was sleeping a very deep sleep. But it has been such a long sleep, will it affect anything."

The doctor smiles patiently thinking that Ragav is smart to have asked him to wait and explain the recovery process to his mother in law.

Kamla looks at the doctor in embarrassment and says sheepishly, "I guess I should give you the opportunity to answer my questions." The doctor smiles and says reassuringly, "don't you worry. I totally understand the emotions you are going through. Why don't we go to the sitting room and I can explain Mrs Singhania's healing process and answer all your questions."

Once the doctor, maya and Kamla maa are comfortably seated the doctor goes on to explain what he had earlier explained to Ragav. He proceeds to inform kamla maa that there is a possibility that Kalpi would wake up disoriented, that her memories might come in stages hence she might experience confusion or in the worst case she might not regain all her memory. He tells her that we shall have to wait and see. Hearing this Kamla maa closes her eyes and pleads to God to make Kalpi forget Ragav. Kamla maa hesitantly interrupts him and asks, "what will happen if Kalpi will not regain all her memory?" Maya interrupts her and says, "let us cross the bridge when we get there." Turns to the doctor and says, "please continue."

Clearing his throat, he continues, "there is all possibility that just like her memories might get affected, her speech, actions might also be affected. I mean to say that there is all possibility that she might struggle to pronounce some words and also might have to relearn how to walk, to chew,..." Kamla maa gasps aloud and says, "are you saying that my Kalpi will become like a baby". Tears falling she turns to maya for support. Maya leans towards her, pats her arm and says, "the doctor is just preparing us for the worst case scenario. So that if any of this happens, we are able to control our reaction in front of Kalpi."

Kamla maa looks at maya, her gaze filled with anger, she says ferociously, "I hate him. I hate Ragav Singhania. He does not deserve my daughter." Maya turns towards the doctor, nods her head, her gaze cold as she silently dismisses the doctor from the room. Once alone with Kamla maa, she says in a cold voice, devoid emotion, "do not do anything that will cause you to spend the rest of your life in regret, away from your daughter. One word or action against Ragav and I promise you, you will never see her again. I do not know what is going on because nobody will tell me. And I respect Ragav too much to demand answers. He will tell me when he is ready to share. So Kamla maa I suggest you tread very carefully when it comes to Ragav and Kalpi's relationship." Maya gets up and storms into the kitchen, her hands trembling with pent up rage for the pain Ragav had to endure when he thought Kalpi had died. For the role Kamla maa had played. Suddenly she feels a sharp pain in her stomach. Her unborn child complaining over the change in her mood. Smiling softly she places her hand on her belly and says soothingly, "I am sorry hunny, mummy did not mean to get so upset."

Chapter 24

The nurse rushes into the kitchen and says, "Mrs Singhania...", freezes then hastily corrects herself, "I mean Ms Kalpana Jhadav has woken up." She turns to Maya and says apologetically, "I am sorry ma'am. Please don't fire me." She continues in confusion, "I have been made aware that the patient is not be informed of her marriage. Please ma'am I am sorry." Maya nods and says reassuringly, "it is okay. Just don't repeat it."

Kamla maa and Maya walk excitedly into the guest room, they stand silently watching as Kalpi slowly answers the questions asked by the doctor and vice versa.

Doctor: what is your name?

Kalpi looks around in confusion: "Kalpana Jhadav. What happened? Why am I here?"

Doctor: "Where are you?"

Kalpi looks at the doctor oddly: "At my boss's home." She wonders why her heart feels heavy as she says this.

Doctor: "you had an accident. what is his name?"

Kalpi: "Ragav Singhania." Tears fall from her eyes from the intensity of the pain she feels in her heart when she takes his name. Wiping her tears, she looks apologetically at the doctor and says, "I am sorry. I don't understand why I am crying."

The doctor smiles at her reassuringly and says, "calm down. Take things slowly. At times you will feel emotions before the memory comes. You will experience confusion. Don't fight it."

Kalpi nods, takes the glass of water offered to her by the nurse and says, "I need a moment to compose myself." Rubbing her chest where her heart lay, whispering to herself, "I hurt so much." Images appear in her mind, disappearing before she can capture them. Frowning she looks at the doctor, only to have him reassure her calmly, "with time you will remember."

Kalpi laughs nervously and says, "are you a mind reader too." Shaking his head the doctor says, "May we continue." Taking a deep breathe, Kalpi nods.

Doctor: what is the last memory you recollect?

Kalpi freezes as memories rush through her... Of joining Singhania Group of Companies... Of cooking for Ragav... His smile... His touch... His kisses... Blushing as she recalls how far they had gone with the challenge. Trying to contain her blush, she says, "The last thing I remember is Aai oiling my hair. She always oils my hair on a Saturday."
The doctor nods his head, taking notes, when Kalpi asks, "Sir when did I have my accident and how did it happen?"

Doctor: "The accident happened on Monday late in the evening. In fact it happened right outside this building. It was a hit and run. You got knocked by a car as you were crossing the road. Do you remember what you were doing here? Why were you not watching the road?"

Kalpi looks on in confusion, her heart aching as she tries to recollect the memories that are eluding her. With a frown she says, "I don't know why I cannot remember. However I can answer your question. Every evening after work I come here to cook dinner for Ragav sir. I must have been rushing home..." She stops as tears begin to fall again. Giving an apologetic smile to the doctor she says, "I am sorry. I have turned into a watering pot. I don't know why I am crying." Her hand automatically going to her chest as if to soothe her aching heart.

Kamla maa silently listens to the conversation, uncontrolled tears flowing from her eyes, her heart calling out, "Kalpu you are crying because Ragav broke your heart. The memories you do not want to remember is of your heart break, my jaan." Needing space Kamla maa quietly steps out of the room. Concerned Maya follows Kamla maa into the kitchen, only to witness Kamla maa drop herself to the floor as she cries aloud in anguish. Maya rushes to her, takes her into her arms and tries to reassure her that things will get better. Kamla maa looks at Maya through her tear filled eyes and says hysterically, "I am responsible. I am responsible for my Kalpi's pain and suffering. It is all because of me. I..." Maya consoles Kamla maa, telling her to calm down and have a hold of herself because Kalpi needs her now more than ever.

Moments later a composed Kamla maa and Maya re-enter Kalpi's room. Kalpi sees her Kamla maa and says excitedly, "Aai where were you. Why did you take so long?" Kamla maa rushes to her daughter and envelopes her in a crushing hug as she cries away. Hugging her mother Kalpi whispers, "I am sorry Aai. I should have been more careful when I crossed the road."

Kalpi turns to Maya to greet her, seeing the bump, she exclaims, "wow your showing. Congratulations." As the day races away, Kalpi slowly walks back to bed with her mother's support after having a shower. Smiling she says, "I needed that." Maya smiles and says, "you look much better." Yawning Kalpi says, "I feel fresher." She turns to Kamla maa and says, "thank you Aai for helping me keep my balance." Then adds, "Aai when is baba coming to see me." Kamla maa looks at Kalpi and Maya comically and exclaims, "I forgot to tell him. Oh my God! Your father is going to kill me today," and rushes out of the room to call Vithal.

Maya looks at Kalpi's speculatively and says, "goody we are alone at last. I can now ask you the question I have been dying to ask all day." Kalpi smiles in confusion and nods. "All day your gaze has been straying to the door. Who are you expecting to come visit?" Kalpi blushes in embarrassment as she realises that she was caught out. She softly says, "nobody." Maya laughs and says, "oh! I thought you were going to say your dad." Kalpi grins as she looks at Maya sheepishly and mutters, "that would have made sense."

Hesitating, Kalpi looks at Maya in earnest and asks softly, "Maya is Ragav sir home?"

Chapter 25

Kalpi forces her eyes to stay open, her desire to meet Ragav... To see him... Strong. Her eyes drooping, heavy with sleep she tries to imagine how Ragav will react now that she is awake. Yawning, she rubs her eyes, blinking rapidly every few seconds as she forces herself to stay awake. Noticing this the nurse tells her, "It is quite late in the night and you are obviously very tired. Why don't you go to sleep?" Seeing the hesitation in Kalpi's eyes and misunderstanding Kalpi's reason to not sleep, she walks up to Kalpi and continues reassuringly, "don't worry. You will not fall back into coma if you sleep. You will wake up. Right now rest is very important for you so that you are able to recover quickly and fully. You should not tire yourself. The bath and the walk to and from the bathroom has exhausted you. As understanding dawns, Kalpi gives her a shy smile as she tries not to blush. Softly she says, "goodnight". Settling to sleep, her eyes stray to the door one last time, falling asleep as soon as her head hits the pillow.

"Ragav don't worry everything went well. Kamla maa handled it so that Kalpi did not look in the mirror Or at her body when she had a bath. She has not seen any of her scars where she was operated. Will you relax."Maya says into the phone. "Look I am hanging up. It is late. Let's talk more tomorrow or should I say later today."

Ragav tries to make himself comfortable as he adjusts his sitting position in the car. He felt cramped from having seated in his car for an hour in the car park as his waited for the nurse to call him once Kalpi was asleep. Worry gnawing at him he looks out of the car window and towards the building his apartment is situated in then looks at the time from the digital clock on the car dashboard and sighs thinking, "It is past midnight. Why is Kalpi still awake?" He turns to look back at the building wondering if he should go up and see for himself why she is awake or should he stick to his decision of remaining out of her sight. Decision made, he gets out of his car and heads for home when his phone rings. Looking at the caller I.D. he quickly answers the phone, "is something wrong?" He asks. The nurse reassures him that everything is fine and that Kalpi is asleep. She then proceeds to explain to Ragav the reason why Kalpi fell asleep late.

Ragav tiptoes into Kalpi's room slowly trying to be as quiet as possible for he does not want to wake her. He mouths a thank you to the nurse as she heads out of the room and quietly sits next to Kalpi, by her bedside. He watches her apprehensively and nervously worried that should he speak to her aloud or hold her or caress her like before, she just might wake up which he did not want. He smiles as his gazes rests on her face, taking the peacefulness of her expression in her sleep and thinks, "I know that you tried to stay up because you were waiting for me." His smile falters as he continues to think, "but alas, now is not the right time for us to meet."

Content in just watching her in silence, Ragav eventually starts feeling drowsy. He sits up and rubs his eyes, then proceeds to get up and walk about the room to stretch his legs, whispering as he looks at her, "This silence is making me sleepy." He heads to the enjoined bathroom and splashes cold water on his face.

The memories and images that eluded Kalpi earlier in the day come back to haunt her forcefully in her sleep. Kalpi becomes restless and starts trashing and turning fitfully in her sleep. Overwhelmed, Kalpi cries out in her sleep as the emotions and pain feel real, falling deeper into her dream as she tries to make sense of the blurry images teasing her. Ragav rushes out, concerned he quickly holds her hand in his as he caresses her back, all the while whispering, "Everything is okay. Everything will be okay. Calm down." Kalpi holds his hand with both her hands and curls herself into a foetal position as she slowly calms down. Ragav thanks Bappa that Kalpi is calm and fast asleep. Not understanding what has caused such restlessness, he helplessly tries to soothe her as he kneels by her bedside, unwilling to release his hand from her hold. Perplexed and at the same time worried he wonders what could have distressed her in her sleep. "Is she in pain?" He thinks. Frowning he realises that this is not true for just this evening he had met up with the doctor and he had reassured Ragav that Kalpi was fully healed barring the lapse in her memory. Kalpi sobs softly in her sleep as she holds on his hand tighter.

Ragav softly whispers to her that she is not alone and nor will she ever be alone. That he will always be by her side. His gaze falls to her face and he chokes on his guilt as he helplessly watches tears falling from her eyes in her sleep. Tears threaten to fall from his eyes as he slowly wipes her tears, achingly whispering, "please don't cry. Please." "Oh gosh," he thinks, "I can't handle this. I am responsible for this. I can't watch her cry. Oh Bappa please have mercy on me. Anything is better than me wiping her tears in her sleep. Please give her her memories soon."

When morning comes, the nurse walks into the room to the sight of Ragav on his knees by Kalpi's bedside, their hands entwined with one another as he rests his head awkwardly on the mattress. She walks up to him slowly, knowing that he would want to leave before Kalpi woke up, thinking, "Poor guy is going to have a sore neck." Ragav thanks the nurse and walks out of the room. Not a minute later Kalpi wakes up, instinctively sensing his absence she sleepily calls out, "Ragav." The nurse slowly walks up to her, when she is in Kalpi's vision she says softly, "no it is me. I am sorry if I woke you." Kalpi looks at her and asks, "was Ragav here?" The nurse replies, "no Kalpi." Needing reconfirmation, Kalpi ask, "are you sure?" The nurse nods and Kalpi says to herself in bewilderment, "I swear I felt he was here, near me." Sleep taking over, Kalpi falls back to sleep.

This becomes the pattern between Ragav and Kalpi for the next week, Ragav goes to Kalpi in the night when she is asleep, leaving her in the morning and Kalpi spends the day anxiously waiting to see Ragav, forcing herself to stay up, but alas she is unsuccessful for her body gives up and she falls asleep.

Chapter 26

Kalpi sits by the window in her room not really watching the hustle and bustle of life as people go about their business for she is lost in thought. Her mind focusing on one thing only... Why has Ragav not come to visit her? No matter how much she bangs her head trying to come up with a reasonable explanation... It just does not make sense to her... Because to her his absence has no logical explanation. Massaging her temple she wonders, "did something happen in the two days that I cannot remember? What could have happened to have changed our equation? I am recuperating here, so that means that whatever I don't remember has not affected us. So why is Ragav invisible? This makes no sense because the Ragav I know would be by my side making me laugh... Ragav where are you... I need to talk to you... I need to understand what is going on... What has changed!"

"Agh", she says aloud in frustration, "I am going to kill you when I see you. How dare you neglect me!"

Unable to take his absence anymore, Kalpi decides to take the initiative and calls Ragav... Only to have him disconnect her call. With nervous excitement she spends the day waiting for him to call her back... Alas no call comes. Feeling empty and lonely over his neglect, Kalpi cries herself to sleep thinking, "please tell me I am wrong in thinking that it was all about carnal pleasure... That nothing else mattered... Please Ragav walk in and tell me that what I am thinking is not true... That there was more between us... That the time we spent laughing... Talking... Arguing... Also mattered... That I mattered to you... Please Ragav... I need you... Please come to me... Please..." Her tears exhausting her, Kalpi falls asleep and just like clock work... Some moments later Ragav walks in to be with her... Whispering his apology for disconnecting her call... Telling her softly as he caresses her face that he just wanted her to realise that she loved him too.

Several days later Kamla maa looks towards Kalpi with worry, as the days go by she notices the spark in Kalpi's eyes diminish. She turns to Maya and says sadly, "have you noticed that Kalpi rarely smiles. She always has an aura of sadness around her. I know she has been crying when she is alone. I have noticed her swollen red eyes." Not knowing what to say, Maya gives Kamla maa her support by silently listening to her. Kamla maa continues, "why is she not confiding in me? She has never kept secrets from me." Maya looks towards Kalpi then back at Kamla maa and says softly, "Would you like me to try and find out what has upset her?" Kamla maa looks at Maya with hope amidst tears eyes, she smiles at her, a smile that does not reach her eyes, a smile that is filled with sadness as she takes her hand in hers and kisses it. Grasping Maya's hand, she whispers in a voice hoarse with emotion, "please." Maya chocking on her emotions, nods and leaves.

Kalpi puts on a smile when she notices Maya walking towards her and says brightly, "the physio therapist thinks that I am doing really well. Tomorrow we are going to tackle the stairs. She thinks my legs are strong enough. I can't wait, then soon I shall go home and Ragav will no longer need to hide and can have his home back." Maya sees the hurt in Kalpi's eyes and then snaps into attention and says, "what do you mean Ragav will no longer need to hide? Are you telling me that Ragav has not come to see you yet?" Kalpi gives her a sad smile and makes excuses for him, "he must be busy with work and probably feels that I have invaded his home."

Wanting to change the topic Kalpi calls out for her mum. Kamla maa walks to the entrance of the kitchen and says, "what is Kalpu?" She uses the pet name Kalpi dislikes, hoping to have the old bubbly Kalpi, who would moan and complain over the use of the pet name. Kalpi smiles and says, "Please make chilli paneer for dinner." Kamla maa looks at her in surprise and says, "you are not fond of chilli paneer. I was going to make your favourite rajma chawal." "Aai please make chilli paneer too. I feel like having it." Kalpi says and further adds to herself, "it is Ragav's favourite." Kalpi slowly gets up and says, "I am tired. I think I shall go to my room and rest."Furious with Ragav Maya just nods, turns in Kamla Maya's direction and calls out, "Kamla maa, I need to head out. I shall be back shortly.

Once alone in her room, the flood gates open as kalpi remembers the last time she had cooked chilli paneer for Ragav. She drops herself to the floor, her heart calling out:

Ragav why have you not come to see me... All you have to do is open the door... Why won't you open the door... Do I not mean nothing to you?... With everything between us... Are you saying that all I was to you was a challenge... Just carefree fun... I thought we were friends first... Was your interest... Your attention in me for one purpose only... I guess you have moved on... You have replaced me... Which is fine I knew you would do that... But I never thought you would ignore me afterwards... I thought having come out from the jaws of death you would come visit... That it would be like old times where we used to talk and joke for hours... That we would share our meals together... Oh gosh have I become like the other girls... Trying to cling to something that is not real.

Her tears exhausting her, Kalpi drifts off to sleep, praying softly, "Bappa I love him. I don't know how and when I fell in love. Please help me." The images and memories that played hide and seek with her for the past week decide to reveal themselves. Her heart racing as her memories come to her in dream form. The pain, the anguish, the shame, the heartache suddenly all real, chocking her, jolting her to wakefulness. With uncontrollable tears she calls out as her heart breaks a second time, Aai. Aai. Aai..."

Hearing Kalpi yell for her continuously, fear grips Kamla maa as she runs to her. She storms into the room and sees the empty bed, momentarily panicking before she sees Kalpi sitting up on the floor her hands open for a hug, crying as she calls out for her mother. Kamla maa rushes to her, drops herself by Kalpi's side and hugs her tight, saying in a rush panic, "Kalpi what happened? Did you fall? Tell me." The nurse rushes in behind Kamla maa ready to take over, but stops when she hears Kalpi tell her mother brokenly, "I remember everything. I remember everything." Kamla maa caresses her back As the nurse says, "let us go sit on the bed. Let us make you comfortable." Kalpi refuses to let go of her mother as she keeps whispering the same words over and over, "I remember everything." Kamla maa gently rocks Kalpi who is hugging her tightly as tears silently fall from her eyes. Her gaze goes up to the ceiling as feverntly pray, "oh Bappa. Help my daughter. Heal her. Please Bappa. I cannot live knowing that I am responsible for my daughter's sufferings. Please Bappa help me." "Sshhh." Kamla maa says, reassuring Kalpi that she is right here and will never leave her.

Moments later Kalpi looks at Kamla maa imploringly and says, "Aai I want to go home."

***********************************************************

Ragav is totally focused on the building plans he has laid out on his desk when suddenly some one or something whacks him on the head. Startled he looks up as his hand automatically rubs the part of his head that was hit. Surprised, he says, "what the hell was that for Maya? Why are you even here? Who is watching Kamla maa? I will not have that woman keep Kalpi away from me." Maya just stares at him as she tries to contain her temper. Ragav continues more forcefully, "why are you not there watching her to make sure that she is not up to any mischief?" Maya raises her hand to whack Ragav again, so incensed she is with him. Ragav seeing this quickly ducks so that she does not hit him again. "What the hell is wrong with you?" He yells.

"What the hell is wrong with me! What the hell is wrong with you?" Maya yells back. She continues on as Ragav looks at her in confusion, "what game are you playing? Why have you not gone to see Kalpi? Have you any idea how much she is hurting with your neglect?" Ragav calms down once he realises what has caused Maya to get all riled up. "Calm down. Everything is working as per my plan", Ragav says. Maya looks at him in horror, thinking, "huh!" She sits down with a huff, forces herself to feel the calmness that is non existent and says, "explain."

"Maya I am hoping with my absence Kalpi will realise that she loves me," Ragav says. Stunned Maya just stares at him, her expression clearly indicating to Ragav that she does not understand him. "Look, I realised My feelings for Kalpi when she was away from me. I am doing the same with Kalpi. My being away from her will make her realise her feelings for me. I will then never have to worry about Kamla maa making Kalpi leave me," Ragav adds. "You have got to be joking. What none sense! Please tell me this is a joke on your part. You do know that your behaviour has just ensured that Kalpi will leave you. You don't need to worry about Kamla maa. You need to worry about yourself." Maya says vhelmently. Ragav's expression from confidence turns to confusion as he listens to Maya.

Ragav leans forward, resting his hands on his desk and says, "Maya I don't understand. What are you saying..." Just then Maya's phone rings interrupting Ragav from completing his sentence. Seeing the caller I.D. Maya raises her hand in gesture for Ragav to stop talking and answers the phone, "Kamla maa...calm down...What happened?... I am coming right over. Try to stall her." She getup, looks at Ragav furiously and says, "Kalpi got her memory back and she is insisting on leaving. You and I are going to have a long conversation tonight." Maya starts walking out of the office when Ragav quickly gets up and says, "I am coming with you." Maya turns towards him and says coldly, "you have made yourself scarce in front of her. Do her a favour and continue doing so."

********************************************************

"Kalpi are you sure this is what you want. Do you want to leave Ragav?" Maya says. Purposely choosing to use Ragav's name instead of Ragav's home. Noticing the hurt that is reflected in Kalpi's eyes Maya regrets her choice of words for a split second as she thinks, "good. With everything that has happened between them Kalpi is not happy with the idea of leaving Ragav." Kalpi tries to smile, looks at her mum as she gathers strength and says, "it is for the best. With everything that has happened, it is for the best." Unable to resist, she adds in dismay, "he never came to visit me..."

Ragav silently listening to the conversation from the entrance, replies, "I thought that once you got your memory back you would not want me to see." Startled Maya, Kalpi and Kamla maa turn sharply towards him. Ignoring Maya's furious look, he walks towards Kalpi. He kneels down before her. They are face to face, just inches apart for she is sitting on the sofa and he says, "I was afraid. I was afraid that should I come in you presence you would remember everything and leave me. Please don't go." Holding her hands into his, he adds, "please give me the opportunity to make it up to you." Kalpi looks into his eyes, feeling herself melt with the raw emotions she sees... Of regret... Of pain... Of love... Of sadness. Instinctively Kalpi leans forward releasing one of her hands from his grasp she raises it to caress his face wanting to replace the sadness in his eyes with happiness. Just then Kamla maa comes into Kalpi's vision. Kalpi freezes momentarily and jerks back... Away from Ragav, as she snatches her other hand back.

Laughing huskily she says cynically, her gaze harsh, "gosh you are too good. I nearly believed you. Sorry to disappoint. You are never going to hurt my mother through me." She stands up hastily, losing her balance only to have Ragav grasp her at her waist and steady her. She pushes his hands away from her body, and says scathingly, "don't touch me." Her gaze filled with loathing, for him and for herself she does not know. She knows she is over reacting. Thinking, "I need to leave. I need to leave now before I weaken and believe his lies." Forcing herself to keep calm, she calls out, "aai let us go home." She turns to Maya and says, "are you still going to drop us home."

For several seconds Maya does not respond to Kalpi's query, her gaze and attention focused on Ragav. Sensing the pain he is in, she wants to yell, "I told you not to come. What the hell did you think was going to happen?" Maya says none of this, instead she turns to Kalpi and says, "of course I am going to drop you. I still wish for us to continue being good friends." Ignoring Ragav she helps Kalpi and Kamla maa. Too shocked to react, his expression bleak, Ragav remains on his knees as his heart cries out, "she is leaving me. I will never see her again."

At the entrance Kalpi calls out, "Ragav sir" she waits for Ragav to stand up and turn towards her before adding, "sir I would like to request for a month off to recuperate before rejoining the office." Clearing his voice, Ragav says, "sure. You can take a the time you need." Kalpi nods and walks out, shutting the door behind her. Ragav slowly smiles with rekindled hope and whispers, "thank you Bappa for giving me a second chance. I will win her back."

P.S: I am sorry guys. I have been banging my head to come up with a reason to have Kalpi stay back. Unfortunately everything I have thought of Kalpi has rejected. Her self respect is demanding she goes back home.
On a good note, don't worry she shall soon start working at the office again and you will have your Ragna scenes and once she finds out they are married Kamla maa will ask her to go and live with Ragav. Don't get excited there is a twist there.

Chapter 27

Several days later Kalpi sits on the stairs of the landing, absently staring out into the courtyard of the chawl, oblivious to her surroundings. Lost in thought she replays the events of the ill fated Monday. Sighing as she thinks, "the day I got to know I am but a pawn for Ragav... The day I got to know that he will never come to care for me... To love me... The day my world came crashing down." Tears glistening her eyes, she looks up towards the sky and whispers, "thank you Bappa. Thank you for the accident. Thank you for the temporary memory loss. I..." She chokes unable to continue, overwhelmed with the pain that takes over. She rests her head on her lap, hugging her body as tears silently fall.

Kamla maa steps out of her house, her eyes automatically looking for Kalpi. Frowning she watches with concern, her heart praying, "Bappa please help my daughter... Please heal her... I can't watch my Kalpi withdraw away from life... She is getting lost in her inner turmoil... Please don't punish her for my wrongs." Feeling helpless, she plasters a false smile, calling out as she walks towards Kalpi, "Kalpi hunny, will you cook dinner today. Your father has missed your cooking."

Hearing her mother call her, Kalpi sits up, wipes her tears, takes a deep breathe, plasters a false smile on her face and turns towards her mother. Hearing the word 'cook', Kalpi freezes, recollecting memories of Ragav and herself... Of her cooking for him... Of them eating together. Panic takes over as she battles from within to keep her composure.

Feeling her mother's arms envelope her from behind, hugging her as she sits next to her. Kalpi feels stronger, feels safe and secure. Softly she says, "aai not today. Tomorrow." Keeping her voice light Kamla maa replies, "you said that yesterday and the day before and the day before that and..." Kalpi turns towards her mother, reads the worry Kamla maa is unsuccessful in hiding, smiles and says, "you are right. I keep making excuses. I shall make dinner today."

Placing her head on her mother's lap, Kalpi says in a small voice, "aai will you help me. Can we make dinner together?" Caressing Kalpi's hair, Kamla maa replies, "why not! I like your suggestion. We shall make dinner together."

Several days later, Kamla maa tucks Kalpi in... Once she is asleep, kamla maa gestures for Vithal to join her on the landing. Vithal silently watches as Kamla paces to and fro anxiously. Leaning on the wall, he patiently waits, curios for he knows deep down that whatever it is that she wants to discuss, she is not very happy about it.

Kamla maa stops pacing, looks at Vithal and blurts, "I think Kalpi should rejoin the office." Raising his eyebrows in surprise, Vithal says, "Kamla it has been only two weeks. Kalpi needs time to heal... To recover." "Vithal, the only wound that has not been healed is her heart. That will never heal until she confronts him. She faces him. I know she is physically weak, but Vithal I can't see her wane away like this. She is disappearing right in front of me... Oh Vithal," she sobs. Vithal pulls her into his embrace, hugging her, calming her as he wipes his tears quietly.

"Hunny calm down. I understand what you are saying... That she needs to be mentally occupied so that she is diverted from everything that happened and let time heal her wounds," Vithal says softly. "Tomorrow I shall go talk to Ragav," Kamla says. thinking that this might not be a good idea, Vithal says, "if you go, who will be with Kalpi. I will go and see him on my way to work."

****************************

Singhania head office

Sighing deeply, his heart heavy, Vithal steps in the office. He smiles at the receptionist and says, "I would like to see Mr. Singhania." Priya smiles and says, "Mr. Singhania is in a meeting." Feeling anxious, Vithal interrupts her and says, "I will wait." Smiling calmly, Priya says, "sure. May I have your name please?" Vithal replies, "Vithal Jhadav." Hearing the name, Priya panics slightly, thinking, "oh no. He is Kalpi's father. What should I do? Should I have him wait in Ragav's office or here in reception?"

Hiding her anxiety behind a smile, Priya says, "sir please follow me." Assuming that Ragav would want his father in law to wait comfortably in his office for him. while waiting for Ragav, Vithal allows himself to feel the emotions that bubbling to surface there was apart of him that is very angry of the advantage Ragav took of his baby... Then there was another part that caused his anger to mallow slightly because he realised that Ragav loved his daughter very much, together with the guilt he was drowning in for the past. The complexity of the situation just made his head ache and what was worse was that he could not share his views with Kamla.

Ragav heads towards his office, his head aching, thinking, "what a terrible meeting!" Priya seeing Ragav walk towards his office, calls out, "Ragav sir." Ragav stops and turns towards her, "yes." Hesitating for a mere fraction, when she sees him scowl, she says, "sir, Mr. Vithal Jhadav is here to see you. I put him in your office." Nodding, he dismisses her. Walking towards his office, he is filled with anxiety as he wonders if something has happened to Kalpi.

Meanwhile at Singhania chawl Kamla maa wonders how to broach the subject of Kalpi going back to work. Concerned, she watches Kalpi lay listlessly in bed, on her side, staring at the wall, not interested in anything going on around her. Keeping her emotions at bay, she says, "Kalpi help me prepare dinner." Not bothering to turn towards her mother, lost in her own inner turmoil, Kalpi says, "I don't feel like it aai. I am tired." Her heart aching, Kamla maa wipes her wet hands in the folds of her saree as she walks towards Kalpi. Sitting by Kalpi's side, she caresses her head. Kalpi quickly wipes her tears, putting on a false smile she turns towards her mother.

Noticing this Kamla maa strengthens her resolve, acts like she has not noticed anything and placing Kalpi's head on her lap, caressing her, she says, "Kalpu my love, I have been thinking... I think you should start going back to the office." Seeing the fear in Kalpi's eyes, she quickly continues, "I was thinking that work will keep your mind occupied and you won't...", leaving the rest unsaid, "aai, I am scared." Wrapping her arms around Kalpi, her hands resting under Kalpi's chin, on her chest, she leans forward and kisses her forehead, Kamla says, "I know jaan, but the longer you wait, the stronger your fear will become. You need to face him... And you are no longer alone. I right here by your side."

Chapter 28

Maya frowns with concern as she sees Vithal come out of Ragav's office and head straight out. She wobbles after him, but due to her condition is not able to reach him. She turns and stares at Ragav's closed office door for several seconds, debating on what to do.

Taking a deep breathe to calm herself, Maya steps into Ragav's office. She hesitates momentarily as she wonders how he will react. Stunned, she stares at Ragav in disbelief for the man sitting behind the desk is one that she would never recognize.

Hearing his office door open, Ragav looks up towards the person, wearing the widest and silliest grin. His eyes shining with unshed tears. He calls out, "she is coming... She..." He chokes unable to complete his sentence as emotions threathen to spill over.

Happy over her friends joy and with the news that Kalpi is on the mend, Maya smiles with relief as she sits across from Ragav. "This is wonderful news," she says. Ragav walks towards her and hugs her tight, saying, "it is the best news I haveheard in a long long time."

Sammy walks in to see his best friend and heavily pregnant wife hugging as they wear huge silly grins... He says, "what are we celebrating." Ragav breaks the hug, turns to face Sammy, pulls him for a hug and says, "Kalpi is rejoining the office soon." The three of them then strategise and discuss the various aspects of Kalpi rejoining the office.

**********************************************

16:00 hrs, Singhania Head office.

All of SInghania Group of Cos gather together into the board room, nervously looking towards one another as they wonder why there is an emergency meeting called.

Sammy walks into crowded board room, sensing the nervous energy in the room, he decides to get straight to the point.

Clearing his throat he begins, "one of our very own had a recent brush with death, Miss Kalpana Jhadav will be rejoining us soon." Seeing the confusing looks on their faces, he continues, "I call her by her maiden name because this is who she is to us... And we must never forget. Due to the accident, Kalpi suffered from amnesia." Flushing slightly, he lies, "in fact she has not regained all of her memories and her marriage to Ragav is a memory that eludes her. Therefore we at Singhania's will refer to her in her maiden name, Miss Kalpana Jhadav. We will not try to remind her, what she has forgotten, instead we shall pray and wish her a full and speedy recovery."

He looks across the room with a hard glare, adding in a firm voice, "should anybody countermand these instructions. Take this as a verbal warning. Should any one of you interfere with her recovery process or tell her anything without checking with Ragav, Maya and myself... You will be fired on the spot. So I am going to make it very clear... Kalpi is not to be informed or reminded that she is married to Ragav. You will allow her to remember it on her own accord. Thank you in advance for your cooperation." And walks out of the board room.
