Amitabh Bachchan celebrated his mother, Teji Bachchan's, 88th birthday on Sunday by giving sweets to the staff of the hospital where she is admitted. He also distributed sweets at the studio in Goregaon, Mumbai where he was shooting.
The Bachchan family distributed 50 kg sweets at Lilavati Hospital and decorated their homes, Jalsa and Prateeksha in Juhu, with flowers. The occasion was kept extremely private with no party as Teji is in hospital. A source from Lilavati Hospital said, "In the morning, at 11am or so, all the members of staff received a pack of sweets. They were nicely packed and had 6 varieties in each packet. It was a surprise for all of us to be given sweets from superstar Amitabh Bachchan."
Surprised and touched, many staff members did not even open the sweets but instead took them home to show to their families and friends.
The Bachchans used to celebrate Teji's birthday with a grand family celebration but this year marked a low key birthday as Teji was admitted into hospital around this time last year. According to Lilavati Hospital, the 88-year-old wife of the late Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan was under observation in the intensive care unit for a long time and a family doctor was supervising a series of tests on her.
Teji Bachchan was previously admitted to the same hospital in April 2004 when she suffered from lower back pain and intestinal infection. Last year, Big B chose not to celebrate his 64th birthday on October 11 because of his mother's illness. With his 65th birthday just 2 months away, sources close to him say that all celebrations will depend in his mother's health condition.
Amitabh Bachchan is known to be a devoted and loving son- a quality that is apparently been passed on to his son Abhishek. Abhishek's grand wedding to Aishwarya could have taken place anywhere in India but the family chose Teji Bachchan's house, Pratiksha, at Juhu for the wedding.
