In the beginning, item songs were picturised on vamps, dancers and B-grade actresses who danced to these songs. The songs were considered "downmarket" for leading ladies to feature in them.
That changed at the end of the millennium with the heroines gravitating toward these crowd-pullers. Soon, that too, became last season and screen divas started making guest appearances in films they didn't star in, just for a dance (see box). Why? One hit song ensures an artist a year of performances at stage shows and award functions. The kind of money actresses get, is more than what they make through their films in a year.
Every top actress worth her make-up kit has danced in an item song. And now Anushka Sharma is all set to join that list. When asked which was the hottest item song, recently, the PK actress said, "Mine! The one I'm doing for Zoya Akhtar's film. I wouldn't have done it for anyone but Zoya."
