Salman Khan and his family have been helping whoever approached them in medical need for a while now. However, at one point Salim Khan started to have doubts about the authenticity of most of the cases they financed. It was then that the family decided to start a proper foundation to help the truly deserving. The money to sustain the foundation obviously comes from Salman Khan.
The family doctor of the Khans, Dr Sandeep Chopra, says,"Salman has clearly told me 'Don't worry about the money. If someone deserves it, I will fund the case.' In fact, recently there was a case which needed about Rs 10 lakh and while I was apprehensive about the huge cost involved, he said, 'I told you not to worry about the money. I will fund the case.'"
The Khan family gets innumerable letters from various parts of the country asking for help. Salman's mother Salma, his sister Alvira and Dr Chopra sit together to gauge the need of the person and accordingly, decide on patients to be funded by the foundation.
Says Dr Chopra, "Salman does amazing work and he doesn't even talk about it. He started painting only to fund needy people. He donates all that he earns from shows and ads to the foundation."
The first case taken up by the foundation was a lady who was operated upon yesterday by Dr Pawan Kumar from Nanavati. Dr Chopra says, "Salimbhai was taking a walk on bandstand when a newspaper vendor approached him with a request to help his ailing wife. We went through the case and realised that they did need help badly. When we approached Dr Pawan Kumar for the case, he offered a discount too. Many people get inspired by Salman's good deeds. The best thing is that Salman does it with his heart and does it so quietly."
Apart from being the family doctor for the Khans and the chief medical co-ordinator for the foundation, Dr Chopra is also associated with Breach Candy hospital and is Salman's school friend.
