Hyderabad: Local political activists in Hyderabad on Thursday attacked the car of noted Bangaladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen when she was attending the book release of the Telugu translation of her latest novel Shodh.

A group of 20 All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) workers, led by MLAs Afsar Khan, Ahmed Pasha and Mozum Khan, stormed the Press Club premises and raised slogans against the author.

They attacked her with bouquets, flower pots and virtually anything they could lay their hands on at the concluding session of the book release.

The police later took the legislators and their supporters into custody.

Another guest, journalist Innaih Narisetti was injured in the attack.

Later on, she was safely escorted to the airport with the help of journalists and the organisers of the function.

Since the 1990s, Nasreen has faced numerous threats from Islamic groups for her writings.

Nasreen is a controversial figure in the world of Literature. Her books Lajja and Dwikhondito are banned in Bangladesh.

Nasreen talks about the torture of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. She has been living in exile for more than 10 years now.

Earlier, speaking to CNN-IBN in April 2007, Nasreen had said that she loved living in India despite being aware of the threat fundamentalists posed to her life.

Nasreen said that fundamentalists are everywhere and I am not scared.

Dear Friends!!
Freedom of expression is basic for any human being!
If we see the state of Woman ..its not changed that much...still they are being trashed ......
Hindu Microsoft Certified Professionals(MCP's🐷) used their reference of Manusmriti to support their manuvadi ..statements....Manu said "Na stri swatantramarhati..."(No female deserves freedom)....and again in the Hindu scriptures..they say "Yetra Nari poojaynte..tatra devata...."( The Gods dwell and shower blessings where the female people are worshipped and respected)...
Muslim ...men.... use some reference of their pious scriptures and restrict the role of a woman in the external world!!!
Don't know about christianity , Parsi community ,Jainism and bhuddism....
.................
  1. Is the state of Woman in this modern era improved?
  2. Why is that women are always .....restricted by the relgious communities...why are'nt they bothered about men?(If shilpa shetty kisses Richard gere..it will be a problem to a local fellow of a local relgious group....as if Shilpa is his fiance😡)
  3. Are 'nt all the religions biased to men more??
  4. Is the interference of political parties in literature needed?
  5. Last but not least....Did you read the books of Taslima Nasreen? What do you think about her writing?

Regards,

Mythili

I can guarantee you that there will be no condemnation from our "secular" brigade/media. No...Mahesh Bhatt, Teesta Setalvad, Shabana Azmi or hamare pyaare Sitaram Yechuri ji won't utter a single word on this incident. There will be no Rajdeep Sardesai or Barkha Dutt expressing sympathies for Ms.Nasreen.

Is the state of Woman in this modern era improved?
Yes, It has changed a lot. But there are so many pig-headed people out there who don't want to loose power. They are wrongly using religion to fit their own agendas. These people disgust me. To attack a woman like that, I am sure that made them feel very "manly".

Why is that women are always .....restricted by the relgious communities...why are'nt they bothered about men?(If shilpa shetty kisses Richard gere..it will be a problem to a local fellow of a local relgious group....as if Shilpa is his fiance)
It's just the way our society has been for years. Women were suppressed when England came in power and since then men think that they have a right to rule over the women. And they are scared to see women with power, it undermines theirs. And especially her books are about female empowerment.

Are 'nt all the religions biased to men more??
No they are not! It's how men have interpreted them over years that has made them biased. Relgions books don't refer that men are more powerful than women with exception of few. If you look at Hindu religion, there are so many goddesses than people worship. If women were inferior than why do so many people worship them. over the history, there has been so many women leaders who have brought good to the world. So, it's all the men to fault with their stupid Darwin theory that think that men are more powerful.

Is the interference of political parties in literature needed?
Books are there to educate and learn from. No, polictical party should be allowed to stop us from reading.

Last but not least....Did you read the books of Taslima Nasreen? What do you think about her writing?
No, I haven't. But is the movie Lajja based on the book b/c it is based on feminist views. I loved the movie. I would to read the books if I knew where I can get them from.

myth nice article.
what can be said about blinded envy / rage-driven ignorant mob psychology? these mobs may be of any culture and religion and from any nation- not just india.

i have unfortunately not read any of her work. clearly sounds like a worth read.

Deepak, I am not too sure about your comment about Shabana. I somehow feel that she is not afraid of stepping up and she is not afraid whether people support her or not. She'll go ahead and do what she thinks is right. I'd love to know her reaction actually.

No. The movie Lajja is different from Nasreen's novel Lajja. The novel Lajja is about impact of Babri demolition on Bangladesh and religious extremism.

I have similar views about Shabana Azmi. She is equally criticized by the fanatics as well as free thinkers. She speaks her mind and doesn't really care about any religion or fanatical leaders. I find her better half PC sometimes. 😊

I was just thinking on the same lines! Lets see who has the guts to back up the poor lady openly and come out strongly against the perpetrators.
