Chapter 33
"So? Should we finalize it Rachna beta? Or do you want to look around at a few more places?"
Rachna looked around at her surroundings and sighed contently.
"It's absolutely perfect mausi ji. It goes way beyond anything I could have ever dreamed."
Sneha and Akash smiled seeing the smile on Rachna's face. As Akash wrote the check for the deposit, Sneha turned her attention to Pallavi, the wedding planner that had been hired for Rachna and Kabir's special day, to discuss the decoration, food, and logistics of all the events. Meanwhile, Rachna drifted away from the group and looked at the venue more closely, imagining all the ceremonies that would take place here within a short 4 weeks. Her stomach churned excitedly with butterflies as she thought about getting married to Kabir again. As much as she had enjoyed the simplicity of their wedding almost two years ago, Rachna had always wished deep in her heart for a grand, fairytale wedding, a dream that was going to be fulfilled in just a few weeks, a dream that would be the stepping stone into a bright future.
As she turned the corner of the hallway, Rachna found herself standing in the middle of a courtyard that was softly illuminated by lanterns hanging from the pillars surrounding the open space. In the middle of the courtyard, a small lotus-shaped pool was filled with flower petals and candles floating in the calm water. Looking past the pool, Rachna saw a small swing that was decorated with lights and flowers to match the rest of the surroundings.
Seeing the romantic ambience of the secluded courtyard, Rachna recalled the sensuous moments that she had spent with Kabir to close off her birthday, just a few evenings ago. Blushing, Rachna's hands automatically went to her lips, remembering almost too realistically how Kabir's touch had felt that night. The hair on her arms stood up as she recalled how he had trailed soft kisses on every inch of her arms, from her shoulders to her fingertips. She wrapped her arms around her own abdomen, remembering how he had cradled her body against his. She shook her head with a hopeless smile as she broke out of her thoughts, but was surprised to find a pair of arms actually wrapped around her waist. Without turning around, Rachna sank back and leaned her body against the familiar chest, gladly accepting the small kiss that was placed on her cheek.
"I thought you had a Skype call to attend?"
"It ended early so I thought I would join you guys. You liked the venue I presume? Akash mausa ji was handing over the check for the deposit when I arrived."
"It's perfect. I was just exploring a little to scope out some spots for the different ceremonies. Wouldn't this courtyard be great for the varmala? Or maybe the mehndi?"
"Hmmm it could be. But going by the expression that I saw on your face when I first walked in, it wasn't the varmala or the mehndi ceremony that you were thinking about. Perhaps something a little more intimate is what was on your mind?"
Rachna blushed again as she pushed her elbows against Kabir, trying to get away from him. He grabbed her wrist quickly and pulled her back towards himself, encircling her with his arms. She crashed softly into his chest, her face painted with a soft rosy glow. She looked up into his dark brown eyes and found him staring back at her intensely.
"Well I must say that I wouldn't object to whatever you were thinking about just a few moments ago either Rachna. But I definitely have a more suitable setting than this courtyard in mind for that. How about some champagne alongside a candlelight dinner? And then, you know..."
Kabir immediately let go of Rachna and moved a few feet away from her as he heard someone clear their throat behind him. Rachna blushed even harder when she caught sight of Sneha and Akash standing at the entrance of the courtyard.
"And this is precisely why you two can't be alone for the next four weeks."
Sneha laughed teasingly and Akash chuckled beside her, as Rachna and Kabir walked out of the courtyard towards them.
"So my dear little Rachna, you can move back home with us until the wedding. It'll be easier for you to focus on the wedding planning without any...how should I put it? Distractions yes...without any distractions. Anyways, ready to go home now? Or were those plans for a candlelight dinner that I heard?"
This time it was Kabir's turn to blush, while Rachna looked at the ground shyly. Sneha chuckled again.
"Oh ok, go on you two. I won't spoil your plans for this evening. But I am serious about you moving back home until the wedding Rachna. I think it would be best for you to bring your stuff over tomorrow. Your Seema chaachi is arriving on Saturday to help out with the wedding preparations and you know how orthodox she is about all this."
Rachna nodded meekly in agreement. Sneha smiled and waved good bye to the blushing couple as she and Akash turned to leave. Once they were out of sight, Rachna grabbed Kabir's hands and wrapped them around her waist as she placed her head on his chest and hugged him tightly.
"Kabir Tripathi, you better cancel all your appointments and phone calls because you're mine for the next 24 hours and I want no distractions. Is that understood?"
Kabir smiled as he placed a kiss on the top of Rachna's head. "Your wish is my command darling. How about we start our romantic rendezvous with that dinner that I mentioned?"
----------------------
Rachna laughed as she stumbled slightly, a bit tipsy because of the champagne from dinner. Kicking off the sandals that were pinching her toes, she picked them up in her hand and was swept off her feet by Kabir. He walked out of the elevator, as they arrived on the floor of their apartment. The couple earned some surprised stares and impish smiles from their neighbors, an energetic family of four - a middle-aged couple with two teenage children, a 15-year old boy and 13-year old girl. Rachna blushed as she heard the parents' chuckle and comment about "young love," while the girl stared out of curiosity with wide-open eyes as she nudged her brother and whispered something into his ear. Thankfully the elevator doors soon closed, taking the family towards their downstairs destination and leaving Rachna and Kabir to continue their romance undeterred.
As Kabir stood in front of the door to the apartment, Rachna waited for him to place her down on the ground and open the door.
"Kabir, put me down and open the door. I don't have the keys."
Kabir gave a mischievous look to Rachna, as he had something else on his mind. "They're in my left pocket. Go ahead and get them."
Rachna gave a playful push to Kabir's face as she craned her neck and felt around for the back pocket of his jeans. He didn't miss the opportunity to place some wet kisses onto her exposed neck, which mildly distracted Rachna from her task for a few moments. Pushing Kabir away with one hand, she searched with her other hand until she found what she was looking for and pulled the keys out. After a bit of fumbling with the lock due to some more sweet distractions from her husband, Rachna finally managed to open the door and Kabir slowly entered the apartment.
They breathed a sigh of relief when they found darkness, indicating that Karan was not home yet and they would have their much needed privacy. Not bothering to turn on any of the lights in the living room or dining room, Kabir immediately walked into the bedroom, still carrying Rachna in his arms. Kicking the door shut behind him, he threw Rachna on the bed and passionately locked his lips with hers with a sense of unexplainable urgency. She entwined her hands around his head and tugged on his hair, as she became engrossed in the softness of his lips and the fiery kiss. Kabir's hands found their way to the back of Rachna's dress, looking for the hook that would free the cloth from her body. Unclasping the hook, he quickly slid the flimsy straps of the dress down and tenderly stroked her exposed shoulders. He lowered his lips onto hers again as his hands continued to work on removing the remnants of the dress from her body.
Suraj hua madham, chaand jalne laga. (The sun has dimmed, the moon has begun to burn.)
Aasmaan yeh hai kyun pighalne laga? (Why has the sky begun to melt?)
Main thehra raha, zameen chalne lagi. (I am standing still, the Earth has begun to move.)
Dhadka yeh dil, saans thamne lagi. (My heart is beating, my breath has begun to stop.)
The glowing moon of the night sky became the sole witness to the couple's passionately romantic night.
