As she gears up for her next release PK' with Aamir Khan, Anushka settles for an interview with ClapsnSlaps and talks about her relationship with Virat Kohli, working with her ex-flame Ranveer Singh and why she has no qualms doing ensemble films! Your personal & professional life is going great guns. How do you feel about it?
Thanks. I am blessed.
A lot has been written about your love story with Virat...
Virat and I are celebrities and it's very exciting for people to see both of us together. But to Virat and me, it's our personal life, our relationship. I try to guard my private life rather fiercely. And that's the way it is. It is our relationship and we can't subject it to entertainment news. You will not like it if your relationship will be published in a newspaper. We haven't hidden anything but we have requested for our privacy. We don't want to talk about it. This is my personal space.
You don't have a problem in being seen with him at public places?
Look, Virat and I have never hidden our relationship. I'm seen moving around with him, freely. But why elaborate on it? Then tomorrow people will ask me about my Valentine's Day plans. At this rate, I'll end up making a TV reality show of my personal life.
There are reports that you have invested in his football club. Any plans for business partnership with Virat?
No. I would rather start a business of my own.
Is marriage on the cards? Or is it going to be a live-in relationship before marriage? And does he get possessive of you when you romance other men on screen?
There you go again! The first step for you guys is to get them to confirm, step two is to have them in a live-in relationship, then is to get them engaged/married and then eventually say that they are planning their first baby. This is the reason I don't talk about our personal life. Between Virat and me, we know what's happening. We know what we're doing. We are two adults who have something going on between us that we can handle.
Coming to PK', how did you train for your character of a journalist?
Real characters look effortless and easy. It's tougher to play a role which doesn't have a disability or something peculiar. You can't train yourself for such characters. But yeah, I did observe a few journalists during the promotions of Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola'. You start to become aware of your surroundings related to what you need for your characterization.
Aamir Khan is a perfectionist while you are a spontaneous artiste. How did you cope up with that?
I didn't give too many retakes in PK. If Aamir had to do retakes, he would do it for his portions. I'm an anal artiste. I'm very harsh on myself. Even after my take is Okayed, I keep wondering whether it has turned out fine.
You have worked with both Shah Rukh and Aamir. How was it working with both and when will a film with Salman happen?
SRK has tremendous energy in him and he is just like a fireball. Aamir is a bit more methodical towards his approach. In fact, I used to get intimidated by him. He doesn't have small talk with his co-stars, he doesn't speak unless and until required. I saw him playing pranks and becoming jovial but only after we had shot for a good part of the film. Aamir is a very sharp and intelligent person and I think I would be nervous with him.
There is a lot of risk involved in becoming a producer. Why did you still take the plunge?
NH 10' is a project I wanted to back. And I have faith in the film's director (Navdeep Singh who helmed Manorma Six Feet Under'). I have watched many movies and wonder why certain films aren't made here despite the fact that we have sufficient resources at our disposal. That was the mindset I went with.
Why has NH 10 got delayed?
I was busy with PK' and Bombay Velvet'. Plus, NH 10' is not a Shah Rukh or Salman film; we need to find a proper window for its release.
The grapevine has it that Aanand L Rai (director of Tanu Weds Manu') wants to join hands with you on your second venture which will also be directed by Navdeep...
We will talk about it once the right time comes.
Just like Talaash', the story of PK' is being well-guarded. Do you think it will affect the business once someone releases a spoiler about the film?
You can't do much about that. PK' is not a thriller. The time till the release it is a thriller but it is not! We are doing this to make you guys feel nice when you watch the film. I think you all will be happy when you see the film and understand why we didn't speak to you about the film before its release.
Do you feel awkward working with actors whom you are linked with?
The thing is that I have very good working relationship with everyone. But I am not going to justify that because to me it is very cheap. Ranveer and I have shared a lovely equation. I was initially skeptical about Dil Dhadakne Do' because we haven't known each other for a while. But when we started shooting, we hit off very well. Same goes with Sushant. With Sushant there was a misunderstanding. I was misquoted and we both clarified it. And I would love to work with Sushant in a full-fledged role again.
Do you think Ranveer Singh has evolved as an actor?
I definitely think he has and has calmed down a lot. Mujhe uska bahot pagalpan jhelna pada tha. He also thanked me for being patient with him.
Unlike your contemporaries, you seem comfortable doing multi heroine films like Dil Dhadakne Do' and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil'. Any specific reason?
It's the way you decide to look at it. To me, the length of my colleague's role does not matter. I always knew Priyanka Chopra has a bigger role than me in Dil Dhadakne Do'. But I didn't sit down to dissect her character. It's a big headache to draw such comparisons. In fact, Zoya Akhtar had almost believed that I will say no to the film. But when I heard the script, I asked Zoya why you were even wondering about whether I will accept or not. So I think we must take calls on good films and not length of the role. By the way, I am the lead in Karan Johar's film. It's not a love triangle, but even if it was I would have done it. I am doing movies.
How excited are you to work on Ae Dil Hai Mushkil'?
I am quite excited. In fact, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan met me recently and she told me that I have a kick ass role in the film. Also it is great that I would be working with Ranbir and Karan after Bombay Velvet' again. We have a certain screen chemistry which is undeniable.
