What's an adaptation to you?

So I am back. This post is not the one I promised but that one is coming up. The thing is I watched today's episode and there is this one thing that keeps nagging me, why did abhi have to take it so far? Why bring it to the point of marriage? If it's because he believes Pragya will be happier this way and leave him for good he is hopeless.

Anyways for now this post is something I felt like writing after reading the comments I received for "why Kumkum Bhagya is not Sense and Sensibility." Since my exams are going on all the pent up tension is coming out here in the form of analysis, philosophy and anything that has nothing to do with my studies.😆 And this one is going to be yet another long post since I just love talking so be aware 😉

As I was reading the comments with one of my friends we started wondering what exactly is it that irked me about kumkum bhagya? Why can't I accept it as just another adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility? Is it because it's an India version? Or may be that it's an Ekta production?

My answer is no. I don't mind any version as long as it's good. And I have nothing against Ekta. In fact I do find her success fascinating, to achieve such fame at such a young age. Some of her works have really been good at some point of time. I say that because her serials tend to stretch after the original plot is over and people wait for them to get over rather than reminisce of the magical moments that were created. One of my current favourites is her Yeh Hai Mohobatein and recently I have started watching Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyaar. I wonder how come there is such a vast difference between the creative teams of both YHM and KKB.

The problem I guess I have with KKB is that it does not fit my definition of an adaptation. Of course that's totally my view and many may disagree but I think since I made such a long post highlighting the differences between the original work and KKB I owe an explanation as to what exactly to me is an adaptation. So here it goes.

To me adaptation is something where you take a story and recreate it in a way that you understood it. You convey the message you received from that story. You understand it, feel it and then you create it all over again so that others fall in love with it. So basically KKB is nothing like that. in fact if a person has not read Austen's work after watching this show I hardly think anyone would be inspired to read it. I know I wouldn't have been.

This is so different from what she did with YHM which is based on the book CUSTODY' by Manju Kapoor. I read the book after watching the serial expecting to know more about Raman and Ishita but it turned out to be more about Adi-Raman-Ruhi-Shagun-Ishita. Nice but not what I had expected.

Anyway so back to the point what exactly are adaptations to me?

Mahabharat is one such example. Every version gives a different message.

Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight is a prime example of what an adaptation should be. It is a master piece. Even today people wonder if Joker was actually wrong or not? His actions were psychotic but his words were so true. Like his epic dialogues to Harvey Dent; "Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it! You know, I just, do things. The mob has plans, the cops have plans, Gordon's got plans. You know, they're schemers. Schemers trying to control their worlds. I'm not a schemer. I try to show the schemers how, pathetic, their attempts to control things really are. So, when I say, ah, come here, when I say that you and your girlfriend was nothing personal, you know that I'm telling the truth. It's the schemers that put you where you are. You were a schemer; you had plans, and uh, look where that got you. I just did what I do best. I took your plan and I turned it on itself. Look what I did, to this city with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets. Hm? You know what, you know what I noticed? Nobody panics when things go according to plan. Even if the plan is horrifying. If tomorrow I tell the press that like a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it's all, part of the plan. But when I say that one, little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds!

Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I'm an agent of chaos. Oh and you know the thing about chaos, its fair."

Sorry got carried away. That was not the point.

On the other hand 3 idiots which I really loved is not an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone'

Kai Po Che and 2 States are though.

Also the famous American TV serial the Vampire Diaries' is not L.J. Smith's version. It's totally different.

So I guess that kind of concludes it, since I am tired after my exam. So that's about it. sorry for any mistakes or typos. i am tired but just wanted to write this after today's episode. if anyone could just answer my question about Abhi. I would love to read your views below on what you'll think adaptations should be like. Please do tell.

But in short, I think, Abhi might be dragging it to this because he himself does not have a proof "yet" to show it to everyone. He wants to catch the culprits red handed, perhaps.

I wouldn't be surprised if he had shared his plans with someone like Rockstar Daadi, because I found her not as harsh on him as Bulbul and Sarla are. Because the old woman was the first one to slap Abhi when he doubted Pragya while Sarla actually empathized with him that any husband would feel bad after such an MMS.
