Shaurya and his friends- Symbolisms

Shruthi, after reading your post I thought of putting together the following thoughts about morality and how Shaurya and co represent different degrees of morality.

Each one of us defines what is right or wrong, acceptable or not for us which guides how we go about our lives.

Here is my take on the 4 friends and how they have defined the limits of their morality.

Shaurya- In one word- is a psychopath: He is cold blooded and self-centred. He makes his own rules. If he believes it is right then it is right. He does not learn from his / others' mistakes, has no respect for rules and authority. No emotional connections with others- not even his mother who went to great lengths to protect him from the law. He has no empathy or understanding of others. He is intelligent enough to use others to meet meet his own ends. He has no regrets for his evil acts as he does not see them as evil or wrong. Moral development =0

Karan suffers from a poverty of morality. He is the least evolved in terms of his intellectual, emotional and moral growth. His sense of right and wrong is based on a very basic pleasure- pain principle' and the law of immediate effects'.

What gives pleasure to Karan= right

What gives pain to Karan= wrong

He will go after anything that gives him immediate pleasure and comfort and will run away from everything that is painful and causes fear and stress.

He does not engage his brain and has no sense of morality whatsoever to throw into the mix. He does not therefore think about the short and long term consequences for himself or others.

Tarun- I have not seen much of him- but he is someone who has his own best interests at the forefront. He does seem to use his brain but only to work out how to make very situation work to his advantage. This includes enjoying the benefits of Shaurya's rule breaking and crimes. He may not initiate evil acts but will join in and participate. He will go to any extent to serve his own interests and protect himself- he will follow Shaurya's orders when Shaurya rules and will abandon him without a second thought when Shaurya falls. He is a master self-preservator-his sense of morality hangs on this principle.

Rishi- has a conscience which was buried away for a long time perhaps as he was not strong enough with his own sense of identity . He was easily swayed and lead astray after falling into bad company. He operated on the level of self-preservation for a long time but has slowly woken up his conscience from its deep slumber given the recent plans of Shaurya; He must have experienced the most moral conflict and must have been torn between doing the 'right' thing and doing the 'safest' thing for himself. He is gradually moving out of the self-preservation mode and has begun to think about impact on others- showing signs of growth along the spectrum of morality.

A lot of our actions or inactions are based on how much we value looking after our own interests vs the willingness to bear the costs of compromising this in the interest of others.
