Regressive Bollywood movies?

Just for fun: What are some bollywood movies that you enjoyed when you were younger but now when you look back at it you realize how backwards/sexist/problematic the movie and the message it sent is?
For example, I was watching Biwi no. 1 and god I never realized how awful it was the first time around. Excusing a man's cheating because he is a "man" and couldn't help it but acting like the world ended when Karishma dressed a certain way 😆 etc

Edit: Oh I also forgot to mention how regressive raanjhanaa is. That was extremely creepy how he harmed himself and was so possessive and creepy with his "love" for Sonam.

I didn't like the movie the first time I saw it either. Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat. Disgusting movie.

This may be a very unpopular opinion but I hated the approach of making the girl get married because it was the right thing for her in both Babul and Kal Ho Na Ho.

I understood the message that a window's life shouldn't be over because her husband died. But it should have been her decision whether she wants to remarry or not.

And if Aman's character felt that he shouldn't marry Naina in KHNK then fine and dandy. But who the heck was he to decide that she should fall in love and marry someone else?

Really ?? I kinda thought that movie was awesome 😆

It had so many twists and turns 😃

I quite honestly can't think of any regressive movies 😲😲😲

Cocktail. Like...are fun, party-loving girls like Veronica only good for having a good time with, but not for having real, romantic reltionships with?

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Basically Rahul only started having romantic feelings for and actively pursuing Anjali after she started 'dressing up' and being more 'feminine' and whatnot.

Biwi. No 1. - Treats male infidelity as a joke. Has a boys will be boys attitude that says you need to forgive men for their transgressions. Masti Grand Masti and several movies follow this theme.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hain - Kajol basically has to completely change who she is to be attractive to SRK. He is unable to love her when she was tomboyish and beat him at sports. I suggest watching "Some Kind of Wonderful" instead.

Raja Ki Ayegi Baarat - I don't even know where to begin pointing out the flaws of this movie. Fixes rape by making the victim marry her rapist.

Dostana - I enjoyed it, laughed at it and saw it a few times. BUT this movie is utterly regressive in how it stereotypes gay people and uses them as a comic routine.

Rowdy Rathore/Kick/Holiday basically most masala movies glorify stalking and persistence as true love and romance.

Hmm I definitely agree with you on Raja ki ayegi baraat. It seems like a lot of old movies acted like if the older sister couldn't marry then it was the younger sister's responsibility to marry him 😕

Oh I notice couple of people said Cocktail being regressive. I thought it was too but then Imtiaz Ali said its just a pure coincidence that one girl happens to be more traditional and other was the party girl and he falls for the more traditional one 😆 Who knows how much of that is true

English Vinglish

What if Sri didn't learn English? Her husband and child would still belittle her for the rest of her life.
Just by learning english, they realised their mistake.

Laurent, without much talking to her, understood her feelings and liked her. Their friendship was better than the husband-wife relationship sri and her husband shared.

I hated hated hated the idea of a rape victim marrying her rapist (per court orders because she cried that she was no longer a virgin and wasn't going to have a Baraat) moves into his house with his family who didn't think he had anything wrong and started spewing stuff about trying to be a good wife to her husband. Ohh and they fall in love too.

Are we thinking of two different movies? I don't remember this sister angle in Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat at all.
