All it takes is to read the definition and entymology of the word "nation".
I would be amazed if an Indian did not get an extra-special proud feeling of being an Indian / of Indian origin after reading that.
With so much diversity in languages and ethnicity, that we share a common feeling of belonging to the land.. speaks volumes of the greatness of the land we share -
a land that was invaded by very many, and yet held on to its identity..
a land that rose above and assimilated so much good brought by even by the tyrants! ..
a culture that is multifaceted and did not, does not and will not cease to grow 👏 ..

If we travel back in time to the beginning of early civilizations, we can hold our head up high even more, to be identified as the world's largest, oldest continuous civilization.
We must also feel proud to have shared with the ancient world, our knowledge of health sciences, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and astronomy to name a few.

This post is not about feeling proud of what we had since those golden days when civilization itself was not a priviledge to all men (women) 😳.
I want for all of us to come together and focus on what we have achieved in the past 60 years- as a NATION by the name Bharat / India.
An amalgamation of cultures, languages, religions- the largest runnng democracy- this land is mother to outstanding people who left their mark in the past 6 decades to make it a land to be more proud of.
I would like to invite all to make it a FUN and KNOWLEDGE post, discussing listing the contribution of INDIAN HEROES post 1947.

To keep it organized,we could focus on all aspects of Indian life.

  • Entertainment- Literature, Music, Movies, Theatre, Sports - other
  • Science and Technology, Scientists, Enterpreneurs, Space travellers, Economists, others
  • Politicians that made a difference
  • Humanitarians who hinted the presence of God in this world..
  • Common men & women who love India, lived there, dared to dream, struggled and succeeded / atleast made an attempt!

Even if you have one hero to discuss, known / unknown, please come ahead and share his / her information. With all the names shared here in this thread, I will design a SIGGY..

Guru Ravindranath Tagore's poem close to my heart
"Into that heaven of FREEDOM my Father- let my country awake1"
I am sure the heroes in past 6 decades will make us hopeful about the attempts made to REALIZE this Tagore-Dream!!

Three points-
1. As open-minded Indians, we know the short-comings of our country very well. Let us keep this thread dedicated only to positive aspects
2. As tolerance and secularism highlights who we are as a Nation, I am sure we will keep the thread the same way!
3. Let us try to refrain from copy- pasting repetetive chain mails 😳. It would be so much nice to make an attempt and share specific information in any way that requires more involvement. Our country deserves spending an extra minute, doesn't she?

Thanks all and PLEASE PARTICIPATE. Let us see if this post crosses 60 pages.. We sure have 60 years to be proud of!! 👏👏👏.. Let us share why!

Great Post!! Really inspiring. There are two names in my mind but will name one and give others oppurtunity.

Image at - http://www.emailme.in/images/stories/countries/india/netaji_ subhash_chandra_bose.jpg

Subhash Chandra Bose, (Bangla: ?????? ????? ?????? ??? ( ????? ???? ??? ) Shubhash Chndro Boshu) (January 23, 1897 – presumably August 18, 1945 [although this is disputed]note), also known as Netaji (lit. "Revered Leader"), was one of the most prominent leaders of the Indian Independence Movement against the British Raj.

Bose was elected president of the Indian National Congress for two consecutive terms. However, he had to resign from the post in the face of a motion of no-confidence, stemming from ideological conflicts with Mahatma Gandhi. Bose felt that Mahatma Gandhi's tactics of non-violence would never be sufficient to secure India's independence, and advocated violent resistance. He established a separate political party, the All India Forward Bloc and continued to call for the full and immediate independence of India from British rule. His stance did not change with the outbreak of War, which he saw as an opportunity to take advantage of British weakness.

He was imprisoned by the British authorities 11 times. At the outset of World War II, in a daring act of escape from the eyes of the British, he fled from India, and reached Germany by a lengthy and dangerous route. He sought an alliance with the Axis powers with the aim of attacking the British in India from the Northwest. When this plan was foiled by the Nazi invasion of the USSR, he headed for Japan and helped to organise, and later lead, the Indian National Army, put together from Indian prisoners-of-war and plantation workers from Malaysia, Singapore and other parts of Southeast Asia, against British forces during the Second World War. Under the auspices of the Axis, he formed the Azad Hind Government in exile, regrouped and led the Indian National Army to battle against the allies in Imphal & Burma during the World War II

His political views and the alliances he made with Nazi and other militarist regimes opposed to the British Empire have been the cause of arguments among historians and politicians, with some accusing him of Fascist sympathies and of Quislingist actions, while most others in India largely sympathetic towards his inculcation of realpolitik as a manifesto that guided his social and political choices.

"Our country deserves spending an extra minute, doesn't she?"

She certainly does...60 seconds of thought on our beautiful India for a journey of 60 years, seems like the least we can do...What can I say now...I am a little overcome by my emotions now and completely flooded with so many thoughts and things that I want to share here...I will come back a little later and share some of that, once I calm down...😊

My limited vocabulary isn't allowing me to tell you how touched and thankful I am to you QT, for coming up with such a supperb, thoughtful and awe inspiring post...

luv,
Raksha...

My friend, I am glad to hear that. It hurts me when people get too patriotic only to rise against something/ someone.
I want to see how POSITIVITY can bring us together as well 😳👏👏.. I look forward!!
