I do not participate in any discussions in IF these days but at times I drop in to read the posts especially on such happening forums like that of Big Boss.Today I happen to read a very well written post on how Salman Khan made a travesty of women's dignity by not pulling up Ali for his insulting comments about Sonali. I agree that dignity of women is sacrosanct and should not be compromised at any cost. However inspite of my own reservations regarding Salman Khan's at times lack of decorum, I had some grudging sympathy for Ali'
Here are my reasons.
Ali's comments were supposed to be private comments they were not meant for Sonali's ears. I guess he did know that his comments were distasteful and demeaning and hence did not have the guts to say it openly. This was meant to be a gossip albeit a dirty one. There was once instance when all the girls were discussing about Sonali in equally disparaging terms but Sonali seemed very casual about that. Women harming other women is 'saas bahu saazish but man doing the the same is outraging the modesty of a woman. whose idea of gender equality is that.
Sonali should have and is fully justified in having a right to get outraged but resorting to physical violence against a man just because she was insulted? Millions of men do that all over the world when they think they have been defied by or insulted by the womenfolk. That is called domestic violence and not bravery. what's bad for the goose is bad for the gander.
I know that this flippant attitude of Salman Khan can set a bad precedent but as a woman who lives in India, I can say it with some degree of confidence that the ladies living in the BB8 house do get far more respect and honour than they would have got if they were living with men picked up from the streets of Delhi, Lahore or Rohtak.
These ladies have the freedom to wear the skimpiest of outfits, share bed with newfound friends and even express their sexuality without being judged. Common man and Salman Khan know that this is not a realistic situation then why make this house a house of honour and dignity ?
As Jesus had once said that one who has never sinned has the right to throw the first stone.
In the BB house, they have all sinned. Why single out Ali?
