Rantara OS- Dr. Angel
"Dr. Antara?"
"Yes Sister?" She hung her doctor's coat on the rack and turned to face the middle aged nurse, "Is everything ok?"
"Doc, I'm sorry, you're needed in the ER right now."
Antara sighed, "Dr. Vikram is late again, isn't he?"
The nurse nodded stiffly, clearly annoyed with the spoilt brat. "You shouldn't be covering up for him all the time." She grumbled. "He exploits you for being so nice."
"I know." Antara smiled, pulling her hair up in a bun. "But if I don't, who would?" Grabbing her doctor's coat again, she headed for the ER.
"Are you sure he's your brother?" the nurse followed her. "And that too, a twin? You two are like poles apart."
"Sometimes, I wonder the same." Laughing, she opened the doors leading her to the ER. "Ok, so what's the case?" she inquired.
"Head Injury with a minor concussion." The sister handed antara the patient's chart. "Nothing serious though. But someone had to see the hunk."
antara frowned, "The Hunk?"
"Oh yeah! You should have a look at that face." She pointed at the man lying on the examination table. "I could kill for a guy like that. Too bad, I have a not-so-good-looking husband."
Rolling her eyes, antara went up to the table to examine her new patient. She wasn't interested in how good looking the hunk was. All she wanted was to be done with the case, go home and crash. She felt like a walking zombie, thanks to her 48 hour shift. But first thing, she couldn't wait to give her twin brother a piece of her mind. Enough was enough.
"Conscious?" she asked the nurse, as she checked the guy's chart to see his vitals that the nurse had recorded.
"Yes, he responds less. But that's because he's just drowsy due the sedative I gave him earlier."
"Hmm. And the wound?" she reached up to remove the gauze plug that the sister had placed on his head.
"Superficial. No internal trauma." The nurse answered.
"Good. But he'll need stitches for that." She pointed at the wound on his forehead. "Give him 10cc Lidocaineand get everything ready. I'll go clean up." She moved to the wash basin, "By the way," she called, above her shoulder. "What does the X-ray say?"
"No fractures, doc." The nurse smiled, "He's got a stiff head."
"Don't all men do?" she mumbled, making the sister who was injecting the patient with the local anesthesia, giggle. "So, how did this happen?" she asked as she scrubbed her hands. "Accident?"
"Well, I don't know yet. Looks like he was hit with something. He came in by himself. He wasn't ready to give details. I gave him a TT shot and that sedative I told you about and since then, all he's done is snoozed."
"Lucky guy. At least he gets to sleep." Wiping her hands with a tissue, Antara frowned. "Why wasn't he ready to give details? Oh, he could be a criminal!"
"Huh? With a face like that?" the nurse asked, horrified.
antara eyes shot heavenwards, "Yes sister, faces like that make a lot of money in that world." She put on her surgical gloves and got to work.
"Doc, have you not seen him well?" the nurse handed her the incision knife, "That face is meant for magazine covers!" She dabbed cotton on the now bleeding abrasion that Dr. Antara was cutting through. "Well, he could only be accused of stealing my heart. So yes, you can call him a criminal."
Amtara chuckled at the silly nurse's love sick puppy eyes. She wondered what was so great about the man. And for the first time, she had a thorough look at the face, the nurse was bragging about.
Holy shit! She found her hands tremble. She had to agree that ... the man was freaking breathtaking!
She dint think she had seen such a perfectly cut set of bones on a man's face in her life. And those long lashes, shadowing his cheekbone as he dozed peacefully. could put a girl's to shame. She could bet his eyes were grey. She dint know why? She hadn't even seen the man before. But grey seemed right.
What the f**k was happening? She cursed inaudibly.
Gripping the knife tightly and taking in a deep breath, she willed her eyes to concentrate on the wound instead. She quickly, but carefully cleaned the neatly incised slash and reached for the suturing needle.
The sooner she was done with this, the better it would be for all of them. At least she wouldn't be sued for goofing up and poking the needle in the man's eye!
"I really wish you dint have to do that." The nurse sighed, as she passed the needle to Antara.
"Do what?" Antara paused and looked up, confused.
"Give him those stitches." The sister shuddered, dramatically. "That would leave a permanent scar on his pretty face. What if he is a model or an actor? You could be ruining his career you know?"
antu groaned. As if her trembling hands were not enough, the sister had to go ahead and make her feel guilty? "I'll try to be very neat." She promised. "And besides, we have an excellent Dermat department. So don't worry."
After 5 minutes and a total of just 3 stitches, she placed the needle back in the tray, "There you go. It's done. Not bad, huh?"
The nurse beamed, "You're the best, doc!"
Laughing, she pulled out the gloves form her hands, "Thank you. Now you can wrap it. And then shift him to the ward. I want him to be under observation for at least 24 hours."
"Oh doc," The nurse frowned, "We don't have any place to shift him. The medicine and surgery wards are already full."
"Then shift him to one of the private rooms."
"The rooms are under pest control."
"What! All of them? How is that possible?"
The nurse shrugged. "I don't know."
"Ok fine, I don't care. Send him to any ward but I want him to be under observation. And page me when he's awake. I want to talk to him."
"Aren't you going home now?"
"Do you see Dr. Vikram here yet?" she asked, as she walked back to the locker room to rest until she was called again.
****
"Doc?" somebody lightly pat her shoulder. "It's about one of your patients."
Rubbing her eyes, antara sat up on the sofa she was sleeping on in the locker room. "Hmm?"
"Mr. Raghunath naik is awake now."
"Who?" she looked at the nurse, glassy eyed.
"Raghunath naik. Your patient with the head injury."
"Oh." She stood. How could she miss asking the name? "Where is he?"
"Umm. Paeds." The sister bit her lip, nervously.
"What!! You put him in the Paediatric ward??!!"
"There was no other place, doc. I tried every possible option. And plus, he dint really object when I told him where he was."
Antara sighed as she wondered what was wrong with the management. Couldn't they afford enough beds? Or had the population hike affected every hospital in the country?
"Fine." If the patient dint mind, why should she? At least they dint have to shift him to another hospital altogether. "So, how is he now?" she asked as they walked to the Paeds wing.
"More handsome than when he was lying on the ER table." The nurse sniggered.
"Thank you for that vital information."antara mocked. "But then, I'm interested to know how is doing health wise?"
"He's perfect. No complaints at all."
"Hmm. Good."
She entered the wing and looked around horrified to find the entire ward gathered at one bed. She saw the kids screaming and giggling as if they were not in the hospital, but in a zoo watching their favorite animal doing stunts!!
And the center of their attraction was none other than her patient who was sitting on the bed, with two kids plopped on his lap and others surrounding him, as he made funny, dramatic faces while narrating some stupid tale.
".. And then a beautiful angel came to my rescue and took me home." He was saying, when he looked up and their eyes met.
Time froze. She was right! His eyes were the most deep pair of greys she had ever seen.
"A very beautiful angel." He whispered, his gaze never leaving her face.
"And then?" one of the kids nudged him.
"You fell in love with her?" another kid asked.
"Did she fall in love with you too?" a third one questioned.
"Where is she now?" someone else probed.
"What was her name?" one more inquired.
"antara di!" a small girl screeched on seeing her at the door.
Antara tore her eyes from the guy's and started at a little one who came rushing to her side. "What a pleasant surprise. I was just thinking of you. You dint come to meet us today. We have a new kid here." the child pointed at her patient. "Well, he looks big, doesn't he? But he wants us to call him Baby raghu." The girl giggled.
"Baby Raghu?" she frowned and looked up to see the guy who was sat there with an annoying smirk.
"You can call me just Raghu." He grinned. "And you must be my Dr. Angel?"
"Antara di is your angel?" the little girl beamed. "How nice!"
"Sister, please take the kids back to their beds." antara instructed the nurse.
"Yes, Dr. Angel. Erm I mean.. Dr. Antara." She immediately corrected on seeing antara 's fierce glare.
Crossing her arms across her chest, she waited for the kids to settle down before she walked up to her new patient.
"So Mr. Naik, how do you feel now?" she asked.
"I think I've died and gone to heaven, Dr. Angel." He winked. "Thank you for asking."
She heard some chuckling from behind her. No way was she letting the guy embarrass her. "Good. So I'm sending you back to earth." She turned to her nurse, "Sister, get his discharge papers ready."
"No!"
She turned back with her brows arched, "Why not? You seem absolutely fine."
"Not until you promise me to give me company for dinner tonight."
"Excuse me?" she thought she hadn't heard him right. Did this freak of a patient just ask her on a date??
"So what time should I pick you?" he asked. "And to let you know.. I let the lady choose her restaurant." He smirked.
The nerve of the guy!!
"No, Thank you Mr. Naik. I'm not interested." She said crisply. "And I advise you to take complete bed rest for a couple of days."
She turned to leave, when she heard him call her, "Hey Dr. Angel.."
"It's antara." she corrected, firmly. "Dr. antara for you."
"Ya well, I prefer calling you Dr. Angel." He smirked. "And for your kind information I live alone. What if I need something in these of couple of days? What if I pass out again? Don't you think it's only human for you to give me company?"
"Sister?" she turned to the nurse. "Please send him a male attendant with him back home."
"Happy now?" she smiled at him. "Don't worry. The male attendant is well qualified. The guy will look after you."
She almost reached the door when he screamed. "At least give me your number." He begged. "I might need it in case of emergency."
"You can ring the hospital. They'll keep me updated with your emergencies."
"Dr. Angel!" he called, as she turned to face him for one final time. "I don't give up so soon."
Shaking her head in amusement, she left before he made another pass at her.
Weird guy! Or was it the head trauma?
