Chapter 23

Next day in school they both looked at each other happily, both had mysterious smile on their faces...they gazed at each other for longer than usual...amusing smile crawled on their lips every time their eyes met during the day. It felt like old times. Dreamy school day passed awaiting for their special call.

In the evening Jalaal called Jodha in the hope of continuing their conversation from the previous day.

Jodha picked up the phone knowing who's call it could be.

"Hello" she said sweetly but masking her excitement.

"Hi it's me" Jalaal said cheerfully. His sound had different energy and excitement today.

"So what are you doing??" asked Jalaal curiously.

"I was getting ready for the exams. Exams are coming in two weeks. If I get low score then one of my favourite teacher will get upset with me, so I better study you know" Jodha replied teasingly.

"Hmmm...In that case you are right...If my favorite student gets low score then her favourite teacher will get very disappointed because her favourite teacher has lots of expectations from his favourite student" he snapped back at her with serious tone, suddenly all humor vanished from his voice.

"So how is your preparation going??" asked Jalaal with concern and thick tone.

"Good. I'm preparing for Business Studies exam right now" replied Jodha quietly.

"How come I hear music in the background?" asked Jalaal crossly .

"Umm I like to study like this!" said Jodha innocently.

"Oh well...good for you...U can concentrate on study while listening to music too" his sound was filled with sarcasm.

Jodha thinking, Is he taunting me??? He sounds like he didn't know I study while listening to music. When it comes to study his tone changes immediately.

Jodha replied "Music doesn't distract me from study...I study better with music on... I don't even realize sometimes hours and hours pass with music and study. It helps me not to get distracted with anything else."

'Maybe now is not the right time to ask all those questions. I should just let her study' thought Jalaal. "Okay then you study I will see u tomorrow at tuition tomorrow."

But before he could say bye and hang up Jodha asked impatiently "But wait, you didn't tell me who you were talking to on friday???"

Jalaal chuckled hearing her question and asked "Why are you so interested in knowing who I was talking to??" Deep line of smirk spread on his face.

"I was just curious but if you don't want to tell then..." Jodha said sadly hiding her curiosity.

"I will tell you on one condition." Jalaal cut her in between.

"What??" asked Jodha irritatedly.

"You will also tell me why you were mad at me and did not talk to me properly the entire week??" asked Jalaal ignoring her irritated tone.

"When was I not talking to you??" said Jodha feigning innocence.

"This whole week." Jalaal added as a matter of fact.

"I have asked you first so you tell me first" said Jodha trying to save herself from answering his question.

"Hmmm ok!" Jalaal gave up and replied "Well, You are insisting so I am telling you, I was talking to my best friend, I have known HIM..." he paused and emphasized on the word HIM' then continued "Since we were in class 2. We are best buddies and I got this opportunity in USA because of lot of his efforts. I will be staying with him and his family in the beginning for a few months."

"Wow!! You have known eachother for sooo long. Thats awesome!!" said Jodha in Awww!! Then suddenly she felt really happy, knowing he doesn't have a girlfriend, it was such a big relief for her. She took a deep sigh out in relief.

"Now your turn" prompted Jalaal.

"My turn for what?? I already told you, I was not mad at you and I was talking to you. Now I have to study. Bye!" Jodha replied mischieviously.

"Hmmm that's cheating. But for now you study. We will talk about this later" said Jalaal thinking 'I don't want her to be distracted right now. After the exams I will ask her again. Anyway it's just a matter of couple weeks.'

Then they both hung the phone up.

Next day Jalaal came for tuition in the morning.

Jalaal and Jodha happily looked at each other and smiled. Gradually their gazing was increasing day by day, they were not feeling awkward anymore when suddenly they will catch each other gazing. Both of them knew without any confession that they secretly have a crush on each other.

After Jalaal left Jodha again drank the coffee left in the cup by him.

Over the next couple weeks they prepared for the upcoming exam, did mock tests and discussed any questions or problems they had.

Jalaal let Jodha study and didn't ask her any direct questions but he could feel some feelings from Jodha's side. He was noticing how she was increasingly becoming close to him, showing a bit of possessiveness in her talks, how she glows and gives big smiles whenever she sees him, how she gets excited whenever they talk on phone. He was very happy seeing all these changes in her behaviour but he still wanted to ask her why she got mad at him when she thought he was talking to his girlfriend. Actually that was a way he thought slyly, he could make her confess her feelings.

Jodha on the other hand was busy studying for exams and was calm and happy knowing Jalaal doesn't have a girlfriend. It was now her routine to drink the leftover coffee after every tution class. She loved drinking it and somehow felt closer to him doing this.

She had no idea what future holds for her or how things will be between her and Jalaal once he goes to USA. Will he keep in touch or not?? She wondered so many times if he will even remember her after going or will he just get busy with his new life there and forget all about her. But she suppressed these dark feelings and for now she just wanted to enjoy whatever time she was getting with him.

Soon it was time for exams. Jalaal always called her the night before to wish her good luck for next day's exam. He always felt good talking to Jodha as she will always be so calm the night before exam, unlike some other students who were always frantic before exams.

All her exams went well so far and now next day was computer science exam. It was the last exam.

Jalaal called Jodha to wish her good luck.

"Hello" said Jodha sounding tensed.

"Hi! What happened? Why are you sounding so tensed??" asked Jalaal confused.

"Umm no I'm fine. I was just preparing for tomorrow's exam" said Jodha trying to sound calm.

Jalaal could tell she was anything but calm.

"Why are you so worried?? You always do well and score highest marks." said Jalaal to boost her confidence up.

"I know! That's precisely why I'm worried!!" whispered Jodha.

"Huh? What do you mean??" Jalaal asked confusingly.

"I mean what if I don't get the highest marks this time?? You will get upset with me..." said Jodha revealing her worry.

"What!! Is that what you are worried about??" Jalaal asked surprised.

"Well, yes! I don't want you to get upset with me" said Jodha thinking why he sounds surprised??

"You don't have to worry about that, it doesn't matter if you get the highest marks or not...just do your best and you'll be fine and I won't get upset." After pausing a bit Jalaal continued "I'm really surprised today, you are always calm before exams and I really love that about you, you are never frantic like other students, you prepare well and do your best...so why the worry today??" asked Jalaal perplexed.

"Ummm I know but I don't wanna disappoint you" whispered Jodha.

"What?? You can never disappoint me...as long as you put in your 100% effort, I won't be disappointed, trust me!!" assured Jalaal.

"Really!! Are you sure??" Jodha asked surprised.

"Yes of course" Jalaal replied firmly.

"Thank you so much for calling me, I am feeling so much better now" said Jodha happily. 'Hearing your voice is always soothing but today I really needed to hear it and it felt extra soothing today' thought Jodha.

"I'm glad I called you, otherwise I'd have found you frantic in the morning in school like other students" said Jalaal smilingly. "I think now you should rest and relax and don't worry you will do well tomorrow!! Good luck."

"Thank you so much for your wishes, now I'm sure I'll be fine" replied Jodha happily.

"Waise how come I don't hear any music in the background today??" asked Jalaal.

"Oh ya, in tension I didn't notice when the cassette got finished! I need to change the side" explained Jodha.

"Which movie's songs were you listening to today??" asked Jalaal curiously.

"Kareeb" said Jodha quickly.

"You really like the songs from that movie, don't you?? You've been hearing them for quite some time now!" asked Jalaal.

"Yes I do, they are awesome!" told Jodha and smiled thinking that he notices everything.

"Can you sing a song for me??" requested Jalaal.

Jodha got shocked...her mouth dropped with awww. She got really surprised to hear his request like this out of the blue. She shockingly asked "What??"

"I want to hear you singing. Please sing a song for me." Jalaal ignored her shocked expression and keeping an impassive tone requested insistently.

"Uhhh I umm I don't know how to sing...I've told you this before" said Jodha shyly.

"Jodha, I have heard you singing before...you have such a beautiful voice, please sing something for me. I want to hear you sing" pleaded Jalaal.

"What, don't lie...when have you heard me singing??? I have never sung in front of you." Jodha replied embarrassedly.

Jalal chuckled and with amusing smile replied "I am not lying Jodha, I have heard you singing...long back...One day I came early for tuition and you were sitting on the swing and singing...I really loved hearing you sing that day. You have a melodious voice...you are gifted .

Not knowing how to say NO anymore Jodha replied embarrassingly "Oh... umm okay! I will sing but not today, some other day. If anyone heard me singing instead of studying right now I'll get in trouble."

"Okay fine not today, how about tomorrow??" Asked Jalaal hopefully.

"Tomorrow??" asked Jodha surprised. 'Oh no, I thought he will forget in a few days but seems like I'll have to sing tomorrow' thought Jodha.

"Yes, tomorrow. You will be free, all your exams will be done" said Jalaal convincingly.

"Okay fine I'll sing tomorrow!! You are not giving me much choice anyway" said Jodha surrendering to his wish.

"Good" replied Jalaal excitedly. "Okay you study now and I'll see you in the morning!! Good luck Jodha!! I'm sure you'll do great."

"Thank you!! Bye!" said Jodha then they both hung up.

Jodha thinking after hanging up the phone. 'He is going to make me sing' Jodha pouted thinking she doesn't have any choice now. 'He has asked me a couple of times before also, I wouldn't have been able to procrastinate this for long, it was bound to happen one day' sighed Jodha. 'So I might as well do it happily, anyway he is not asking much from me!'

Next morning outside exam room

Jalaal reached and saw as usual all the kids were busy in their books doing last minute preparations. He looked around for Jodha but couldn't see her.

Meanwhile, other students circled around him and started asking questions and clearing their doubts. Jalaal started explaining to them and solving their problems while still looking around for Jodha, he was anxious to see her remembering how nervous she was the night before when he talked to her.

Suddenly he felt her presence and looked up to find Jodha walking towards him with a big smile and her usual calm self, not looking nervous at all. Jalaal returned her smile with an even bigger smile. He felt elated seeing her confident.

"Good Morning" she greeted Jalaal happily. 'He is so nice, he came to wish good luck to everyone' thought Jodha while looking and smiling at him.

"Good Morning Jodha! How's your preparation? Do you have any question??" Jalaal asked concernedly.

"I'm good, no...no questions" Jodha replied confidently.

Jalaal gave her a big smile and nodded his head in approval. Then he said "Good Luck Everyone" while looking at Jodha specifically.

Everyone went in the class and soon the exam began.

After Jodha finished her paper she felt happy with her answers and was feeling her result would be good.

She handed over the paper and came out of the class.

As she was picking her bag she saw Jalaal walking down the hall towards her. She smiled at him and he felt happy seeing her smile and thought 'seems her exam went well.' He reached near Jodha and asked "How did your exam go??"

"Very good" Jodha replied cheerfully. "Thank you so much for calling me yesterday."

"I am glad to know your exam went well, I'm looking forward to checking it." said Jalaal happily. "Okay so I will call you in the evening, you remember your promise right?? You have to sing a song for me!"

"You still remember it??" asked Jodha and pouted.

Jalaal chuckled seeing her pouting and said "How can I forget that??? Yes of course I remember!"

Jodha smiled and said "okay!"

Entire afternoon Jodha waited nervously for the evening...she felt nervous about singing in front of him but the fact that at least it will be on phone and not face to face was comforting her. Throughout the day she shuffled her mind to pick a song but couldn't decide on one...and decided to ask Jalaal which song he wants her to sing.

Jalaal called Jodha in the evening

"Hello" said Jodha sweetly knowing very well who it is.

"Hi! How are you??" asked Jalaal.

"I am good" replied Jodha happily. As soon as she heard him on the phone, her heart started beating at the speed of express train.

"You sound cheerful, anything special" Jalaal asked teasingly.

'I am talking to you so of course I am happy' thought Jodha. "Umm ya, exams jo finish ho gaye hain" (of course exams finished so feeling relaxed) giggled Jodha mischieviously.

Jalaal smiled and shook his head thinking 'I thought it was because you are talking to me, coz I feel like this when I talk to you.'

"Ya thats true! So are you excited for holidays?? Going somewhere during holidays??" Jalal asked her curiously.

"No, no plans to go anywhere!!" replied Jodha. Then suddenly tube light blinked in Jodha's mind and hastily she asked "Are you going somewhere?? So there will be no tuition classes??"

"No no I am not going anywhere I am here only but some students are going so I will not take classes for those groups. It depends on everyone's plan in your group, you all can decide if you want to take classes or not. I am okay either way" said Jalaal while hoping her group decides to take classes otherwise he won't be able to see her for almost two weeks.

"I am not going anywhere, I will be here during the holidays but I don't know what everyone else's plan is??" said Jodha uncertainly.

"Its okay we can discuss this tomorrow during tuition, right now I want you to sing a song for me" said Jalaal excitedly.

"Ohh Nooo You still remember???? Do I have to??" pouted Jodha.

"Yes please, You promised me and I have waited long, I am not hanging up the phone unless you sing !" Jalal said insistently.

"Okay! Which song????" said Jodha in cranky tone.

"Any song, your choice, I just want to hear you sing" said Jalaal impatiently.

"Ummm I have been listening to Kareeb's songs nowadays a lot so how about one of the song from that movie??" asked Jodha.

"Okay, any song is fine with me" Jalal said in desperate tone.

"Okay let me go play the cassette, I'll be right back" said Jodha and went in the other room leaving Jalaal on hold.

'Which song should I sing, I love all of them' she thought while looking at the cassette cover and reading the song titles. Ohhh this song is perfect, I really feel connected to this song, it completely describes my feelings. At least I will get a chance to say indirectly how I feel for him and he will not even realize it. Yes, I will sing this one.' Jodha played the song and went back to the phone. She kept the volume slow so Jalaal could hear her voice more than the song in the background. The song started playing and as the initial music played Jodha's heart beat started beating faster in nervousness. She quickly asked "You won't laugh at me later, right??"

"What?? No, why would I laugh??" Jalaal replied mischievously.

"Okay good, here I go" and Jodha started singing in low tone in beginning ...

Hearing her melodious voice Jalal got mesmerized in listening. After few lines his mind noted the meaning of the words... these intense lines gave shock to Jalaal and he thought 'Is she confessing her feelings indirectly??? Why she is singing such an intense romantic song??? Or is it just a coincidence that she chose this particular song to sing for me??? Oh... Jodha you are making me more and more crazy for you every day!'

Jalaal kept listening and trying to figure out if Jodha was really trying to tell him something. 'Is she trying to tell me how she feels??' He could sense intense ache in her voice.

The song was finished but both of them stayed quiet for sometime unable to speak! Both were lost in thoughts and scared of separation. At that moment both realized they can't bear separation. This song brought their fears to reality. Jalaal's heart was crying and ready to break all boundaries...First time ever he thought 'I don't care if she is my student...I don't care we have age difference...I don't care we are from different religions...the truth is I love her and If she loves me too then I am ready for all consequences.'

Jodha being in tears was unable to speak too.

They both composed themselves. Jalaal swallowed the bile in his throat which was threatening to choke him. Jodha also wiped her tears and took a deep cleansing breath. Suddenly she realized Jalaal hasn't said a word during the whole song. 'Is he still on the phone or did it get disconnected??' she thought.

"Hello! Hello! Sir are you still there??" asked Jodha confused.

"Y yes, yes I am" whispered Jalaal.

"Uhhh what happened?? Why are you whispering??" Jodha asked anxiously.

"Nothing, why did you sing this song??" Jalaal asked in serious tone.

"Huh!! What??" Jodha asked fearfully.

"I'm asking why did you sing this song particularly??" Jalaal asked again.

"Uhh no particular reason, umm because I really like it" Jodha said almost in a whisper. 'Where is he going with this?? Maybe I shouldn't have sung this song...Oh my God what should I do now??' Jodha got scared what will happen now.

"Because you like it, is that the only reason?? Not because you..." he stopped himself and thought 'Should I ask?? What if she sang it without thinking or only because she likes the song!!'

Before Jalaal could decide anything Jodha broke his chain of thoughts and hastily asked "I fulfilled my promise and sung a song for you, can I go now...mumma asked me to come early today." Jodha panicked and closed her eyes and started praying 'Please say okay please please, please I don't wanna answer any questions. Why did I sing this song?? What have I done?? Please save me God!!"

Jalaal himself was confused as to how he should react to this whole thing so he also hastily said "oh okay, sure!! I will uh I will see you tomorrow."

"Yes sure! Uhhh bye!" Jodha agreed.

"Bye" replied Jalaal.

Jodha quickly hung up the phone. 'Thank God I thought of the excuse that Mumma asked me to come early, otherwise how would have l answered his question. "Why did I sing that song, crazy me! Why did I think he will not realize anything when I'll sing this song??" She slapped her head in frustration and said "bacha liya bhagwanji ne. Thank u god!!!!!! Thank u."
