I felt the same too. He seemed like a poet and artist before. He was forced to be a businessman by this challenge...and I am sure he is not enjoying this role of his...that's why that contempt in him, when he says that since 7 yrs he is living this challenge..
Artists are free birds who like to express themselves, probably he feels suffocated in the current situation of his.
Regarding the similarity between him and Arzoo is that both are expressive people. Arzoo likes being poetic too...she is very similar to him ..what he was 7 yrs ago. Loving caring and sensitive...

I posted the same thing on another thread"May be the whole thing about the promise is actually an ideological challenge. The way Zeenat says that he cannot do business, and him promising that he will be one of the richest men in India. At that point he looks like he is completly in love with her.But coming back to the present, he actually says "Mera vaada pore hone ko hai Zeenat, lekhin ise dekhne ke liye tumhe vaapas aana hoga" , there is an intensity in that dialogue, amounting to hatred (or so I think). All she wanted was money and now he has it. Its like his victory over her."
