Erma Bombeck, When God Created Mother
When the Good Lord was creating mothers, He was into His sixth day of "overtime" when the angel appeared and said. "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."

And God said, "Have you read the specs on this order?" She has to be completely washable, but not plastic. Have 180 moveable parts...all replaceable. Run on black coffee and leftovers. Have a lap that disappears when she stands up. A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair. And six pairs of hands."

The angel shook her head slowly and said. "Six pairs of hands... no way."

It's not the hands that are causing me problems," God remarked, "it's the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have."

That's on the standard model?" asked the angel. God nodded.

One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, 'What are you kids doing in there?' when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn't but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say. 'I understand and I love you' without so much as uttering a word."

God," said the angel touching his sleeve gently, "Get some rest tomorrow..."

I can't," said God, "I'm so close to creating something so close to myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick...can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger...and can get a nine year old to stand under a shower."

The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. "It's too soft," she sighed.

But tough!" said God excitedly. "You can imagine what this mother can do or endure."

Can it think?"

Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise," said the Creator.

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek.

There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told You that You were trying to put too much into this model."

It's not a leak," said the Lord, "It's a tear."

What's it for?"

It's for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness, and pride."

You are a genius, " said the angel.

Somberly, God said, "I didn't put it

Cabir's moms reaction is spot on its not pandering to "Mahanta" nor is it catering to trivialisation. It is real and raw and I hope the writers explore this further.
Her rejection and denial is heartening because at the core of it is unfaltering love. She is not rejecting her child but instead rejecting the obvious social stigma. She has to protect her child and she is so helpless in the face of the magnanimity of this situation. She is going through all the stages of grief and am so glad it's denial, anger. She is going to start feeling guilty as to how she has failed her son as a single mom. Then she will finally accept it and once she does she will rise magnificently to the occasion.

I get nervous if my child gets made fun of whilst dancing because I know it's not his strength. I'm not afraid of his failure but his rejection by the world. No one will tell you that it's gut wrenching to watch your child feel rejected. And you don't know how to protect them. Cabirs mom is processing this information as a severe social failure with fierce protectiveness. I'm sure this will be another USP of this serial. To every mother who faces a moral dilemma or social stigma be it mental illness, homosexuality,or being different I hope they don't feel alone and am glad a mainstream serial is dealing with it without making it comical.

Bae, what a thought provoking post. It's true. A mother wants to protect her child from all the cruel things in the world. Cabir told his mom that he's gay but she heard "social outcast". And no mother wants that for her child.
Yes patriarchy probably had a lot of influence on her reaction but above all it's the innate need to protect him.

Doc lovely post🤗

We fear what we do not understand and this is exactly what Cabir's mom feels. Her love for her son is intact but its the fear of the unknown that makes her wary.
As a single mother, a divorced mom, she has probably faced social stigma and taunts and as a parent you want to protect your child from all those taunts that you faced. And being gay is a bigger social stigma than being a single divorced mom.

I love how this show interweaves, all sorts of social commentary in without being preachy and moralistic. It just acts as an extrapolation of society with some cinematic liberty.

i miss my mommy
but Cabirs mom reaction was justified, she lives in India where all this is still a taboo, homosexuality is considered as a disease which can be cured , and you laws to ban them
which mother would want her child to face all of this ?
like you said its her fear of social stigma for her child that is causing her to behave like this
how she comes along is the thing i want to see
lovely post Doc 🤗

Once a mom always a mom..
I just couldn't get Cabirs mom out of my head. I only heard her helplessness when she kept alluding to homosexuality as a disease. It broke my heart.
Thanks Bushra 🤗

My mom is the only person in the world who knows When I m fibbing.
It's the toughest job in the world and boy does Cabirs mom have her work cut out. But she will figure it out and I hope they show that journey

This probably was the most real thing mtv has tried handling it through this show. Cabir's mom was the "cool" mother of the gang , the one who understood and tried keeping up with her child. This was not only because of her eternal love for her child but to save him from society , to be there with him everything. As a single mother , she has seen social stigma and what they can do to an individual , she has suffered it all , she doesn't want the trauma for her child. her instinct is to save her kid from the social segregation, spare him the judgmental fingers .
Cabir's mom might have been ok with homosexuality but she like many other parents might not wish it on their children . She wants to correct him, so that Cabir doesn't stand out from the rest. He was already marked as a child raised by a single mother, the accusations of his sexuality might also fall on her parenting . She is frustrated , irrational , angry and just trying to save her child- very normal and very instinctive. Eventually she will have to realize that her child is not an abnormal or separate from this society. His sexuality is natural and it doesn't make his identity.

You pen this down so wonderfully Doc - The role of Cabir's mom, including her thoughts and words in these recent episodes have really come to a foreplay with Cabir sharing his secret. For any mother, it is in her to protect her child, be it in acceptance or away from the world. Her dynamics have surely changed - We've always seen her laughing, smiling, sharing a banter with Cabir, and some really sweet moments, but with Cabir being gay, it has changed - not entirely, but she doesnt want Cabir to be looked upon differently, or outcasted, no mother wants that! I understand her, and her accepting Cabir, making sure that the world will also accept him is one of the most real things in this show - its relatable, yet something you look up to. Kudo's to MTV and the show!
