You don't even know how much I had to think about whether I should post that chapter or not. I had almost deleted it and started writing a censored version, but then I didn't have time to rewrite so I ended up just posting what I had originally written.

No need to apologize. Just happy that you were able to read and catch up on the past chapters. Glad you liked the twist. And yes, Karan is a positive character here, who will be a big support to Rachna and Kabir. 😊

Thanks so much! Glad you liked these updates. I really wanted to show a son-in-law (Kabir) bonding with his mother-in-law (Sneha); I think it's a relationship that is not often explored but it definitely can be a very personal and positive one. 😊

That was everyone's reaction to this chapter as well, so I can't say I'm surprised. 😆
But you're lucky that you have the next chapter already available to you and don't have to wait for the suspense to unfold. 😊

Chapter 28:

"Okay Mrs. Rachna Kabir Tripathi, can you tell me about what happened on the afternoon of September 25th? And please be as detailed as possible for our jury members and the judge."

"The afternoon of September 25th? Uh, I was sitting at home with my family."

"Excuse me?"

"On September 25th I was at home with my family. But on the afternoon of September 26th, which is when the incident in question occurred, I was at my friend Chaya's house for her wedding. This is exactly what was filed in the police report. Please get your dates right Mr. Karanjkar."

The audience chuckled at the lawyer's mistake, while Kabir smiled brightly at Rachna's cheeky response.

"Order in the court! Karanjkar, get your facts right as you proceed with your questioning."

"Yes You Honour; very well Mrs. Tripathi. Can you tell the court exactly what happened on the afternoon of September 26th then?"

Rachna took a deep breath before she narrated her story to the court. "It was my friend Chaya's wedding that day. I went to her house early in the morning for the haldi ceremony. Once the ceremony was finished, I was going into Chaya's room to see if she needed my help with anything. But as I was walking through the hallway, he pulled me into the storeroom forcibly and tried to m...mol...molest me." Rachna glared at Mayank.

Karanjkar smirked as he asked his next question. "Can you please define molest for us Mrs. Tripathi? What exactly happened with you?"

Mayank stared at Rachna lecherously, wanting to induce fear and panic into her mind. Rachna's face became pale and her hands began to shake, as she tried to control herself from falling prey to the horrid, traumatizing memories that were attempting to pull her back into the nightmare of that day. She squeezed her eyes shut, wanting to push away the flood of memories that were threatening to drown her. Kabir became tensed seeing Rachna's anxiousness.

"Objection Your Honour. The defense is trying to unnecessarily traumatize my client by asking her pointless questions. I can easily define the word molest for you Mr. Karanjkar if you are unsure. My client is not required to answer that question."

"Sustained. Mr. Karanjkar, you are toeing a very fine line right now. One more offense from you and you will no longer be allowed to continue these proceedings."

Karanjkar nodded solemnly, as he changed his question.

"So there was a wedding in the house Mrs. Tripathi? That means that there must have been a lot of people wandering around. Did you not scream for help?"

Rachna remembered how she had struggled to breathe as the brawny hands had clasped across her mouth that day. She could feel the coldness of the handkerchief moistened with chloroform on her skin even today. Her vision had become blurry almost immediately after she had gotten the smallest whiff of the chloroform through her nose and it had not taken long after that for her to completely lose consciousness.

"He covered my mouth before I could scream. I fought against his hold as much as I could but he drugged me and I became unconscious."

"Interesting Mrs. Tripathi. Well, you must have seen the face of the person who tried to force himself onto you. At least before you became unconscious?"

Rachna looked down. "I...I didn't see his face. It was really dark in the room."

"Point to be noted Your Honour. There was a wedding going on in the house and yet, not a single guest or family member saw my client on the premises. Moreover, Mrs. Rachna Tripathi herself claims that she was unable to see the face of the person who tried to molest her because the room was too dark. Yet, she claims very confidently that it was my client, Mayank Tiwari, who assaulted her despite the fact that she did not see his face."

"Objection Your Honour! My client was unable to see the face of the person who assaulted her but these medical reports that I will present to you clearly indicate that it was Mr. Mayank Tiwari who attempted to molest my client. In fact, once Mr. Karanjkar is done with his examination, I would like to call upon Dr. Nitin Rao, who conducted Mrs. Rachna Tripathi's post-assault medical examination, to give his testimony."

"Sustained Pathak. Mr. Karanjkar, do you have any further questions to ask the victim?"

"Yes, Your Honour, I do. So Mrs. Tripathi, you didn't see your assaulter's face. Well, let's move past that. Let me now ask you then, what is your relationship with my client, Mr. Mayank Tiwari?"

"Relationship? I share no relationship with this disgusting man! How dare you ask such a question?"

"Relax Mrs. Tripathi. No need to get angry at me. I'm just trying to piece together and understand what happened that day. Now, if you share no relationship with my client then how was he, a complete stranger, able to sneak into the house where a busy, bustling wedding was going on? Didn't anybody notice him? Moreover, how was he able to sneak out unnoticed after he committed such a heinous act?"

Rachna blinked to fight back the tears that were trying to overflow from her eyes. "I...I...I don't...I don't know."

"Okay then, let me ask you an easier question. Answer with a simple yes or a no. Did my client Mr. Mayank Tiwari ever share any sort of a relationship with anyone in your family, perhaps your sister, oops sorry, cousin Miss Gunjan Garg?"

"Objection Your Honour! The defense lawyer is asking irrelevant questions to the case at hand."

"Objection overruled. Mr. Karanjkar please continue."

Pathak slumped back down in his seat, realizing very quickly the angle that Karanjkar was going to push this case towards.

"Mrs. Tripathi, please answer the question. Did my client Mr. Mayank Tiwari ever share any sort of a relationship with your cousin Miss Gunjan Garg?

"He...I mean...they..."

"A simple yes or no answer Mrs. Tripathi!"

Rachna glanced over at Kabir, who appeared to be tensed. Looking back towards Karanjkar, she whispered out a small "Yes, but..."

"Thank you very much. That's all for now Mrs. Tripathi. You may take your seat. So point to be noted Your Honour. Mrs. Tripathi's cousin, Miss Gunjan Garg shared a relationship with my client. For the next hearing, I would like to question Miss Gunjan Garg."

"The court will send a summons to Miss Gunjan Garg for her to be present at the next hearing. Mr. Pathak, you may call up Dr. Nitin Rao and submit the medical reports."

Karanjkar smirked at Pathak before taking his seat. Rachna slowly walked away from the witness box and sat down in her seat. Kabir put his arm around Rachna's shoulders as she rested her head against his chest and closed her eyes. Pathak presented the medical reports to the judge as Dr. Nitin Rao stood in the witness box.

"Dr. Nitin Rao, can you tell the court what you found in the post-assault medical examination that you conducted on my client, Mrs. Rachna Kabir Tripathi?"

"When I did the check-up on Rachna, it was within a few hours of the attempted molestation, so essentially it was the ideal time frame to get evidence of the assaulter's DNA from the victim's body. At that point, Rachna was still unconscious from the effects of the chloroform that she had been given to make her pass out. She had scratches and bruises all across her body, particularly on her chest, abdomen, and face. It appeared that she had fought hard to resist the assault, given the number of injuries she had sustained. When a victim is attempting to get free from the assaulter's hold, often pieces of the assaulter's skin are lodged under the victim's nails. In the forensic analysis, we found samples of skin cells underneath Rachna's nails, which we tested in the lab. The DNA from those skin cells matched Mayank Tiwari's DNA. This is indicated in the verified report that you have in your hand Your Honour."

"Thank you Dr. Rao for providing your expert opinion. That is all Your Honour. These medical reports clearly indicate that it was Mr. Mayank Tiwari who sexually assaulted my client, Mrs. Rachna Tripathi. Based on the evidences I have presented Your Honour, namely the flight details of Mr. Mayank Tiwari's arrival into Mumbai the day prior to the reported assault and also the medical report, the case is crystal clear; Mr. Mayank Tiwari is the one who has assaulted my client."

"Objection Your Honour! Mr. Pathak is trying to wrap up this case as easily as possible. In doing so, he is brushing some vital details of this case under the carpet. It is my humble request that we continue the proceedings on the next available date, when I would like to present my own witnesses and evidences."

"Sustained. The court is adjourned for today. We will resume the session tomorrow morning, when Mr. Karanjkar will be given the opportunity to present his arguments. Court adjourned."

------------------

Gayatri sat down on the bench as she waited for the police officer to bring Mayank to the visitation room. Once he arrived, he sat down and was promptly handcuffed to the chair.

"You have 20 minutes," the warden said before leaving the room.

"Mayank, what have you gotten yourself into? You know with how much difficulty I managed to save you from that accident case? And now even that boy that we paid to take the blame is refusing to cooperate. I've managed to keep him hidden away for the time being but God knows how much longer he'll stay there. Why did you do all this now?"

Mayank smiled dreamily, lost in his own romantic thoughts.

"I just couldn't stop myself. When I saw her in Delhi that day and saved her from that speeding car, she was in my arms. She was clutching onto me for dear life; she was so close to me. I could feel her sweet breath on my neck. Her fragile little body was quivering in my arms. I couldn't stop thinking about her after that. I couldn't control myself."

"Mayank, stop it! Get yourself out of this daze and listen to me very carefully! Tomorrow's plan for court. Karanjkar is going to question Gunjan and she is the only one who can save you from this case now. Blackmail her, emotionally blackmail her as much as possible. That's the only way you're going to get out of this. Understand?"

"Yeah yeah I get it. Well at least now this stupid Gunjan is of some use to me. I only pretended to fall in love with her so I could get close to Rachna but obviously it backfired. Damn that day that I had to go along with that whole drama of getting married to her!"

"That whole drama is going to save you now, you get that? So stay alert tomorrow and make sure you remind her of that love and that marriage. If anything, play the baby card. The judge will melt hearing that soppy crap."

Mayank smirked. "You're right. Don't worry, I got this. Just make sure Karanjkar doesn't play stupid tomorrow like he did today. I mean seriously, he forgot the date?! He's such an idiot!"

"I'll handle him. Trust me, he won't be making any more mistakes tomorrow if his family and children are dear to him."

The warden entered the room, indicating that the visiting time was over.

---------------------

Sneha handed Rachna a glass of water. "Rachna here, drink some water. Relax beta; don't be so worried. Even Pathak said that our case is very strong. The opposition is only trying to distract the court with irrelevant details; we have strong evidences on our side that prove that Mayank is guilty."

Kabir sat down next to Rachna on the couch and gave her a side hug. "You did great today. And Sneha mausi is right; we have nothing to worry about Rachna."

A lone tear fell from Rachna's eye and slid down her cheek. "But Gunjan has to testify in court tomorrow. It's not good for her to take so much stress. What if something happens to her or the baby? I...I won't..."

Kabir placed his finger over Rachna's mouth. "Shhh. Nothing will happen to Gunjan. Pathak has said that Karanjkar won't be able to go hard with Gunjan since she is pregnant. The judge won't allow him to put too much stress on her. Anyways, come on now; let's go home.

Kabir and Rachna stood up to leave.

"Kabir beta, Rachna; why don't you guys just stay here tonight?"

"No mausi ji; Karan must be waiting for us at home and I think Rachna will be more tensed if she stays here tonight. We'll just get going now and meet you directly in the court tomorrow."

Sneha, understanding Kabir's point, nodded and allowed Rachna and Kabir to leave.

-----------------------

Kabir climbed into bed next to Rachna, who immediately moved closer to him and rested her head on his shoulder, using it as a pillow. Having Rachna so close to him, Kabir could smell the intoxicating fragrance of the sweet coconut scented shampoo that she used in her hair. Rachna had her eyes closed, but her uneven breaths told Kabir that she was still awake.

"Rachna?"

Hearing Kabir's voice, Rachna's opened her eyes. "Hmmm?"

Kabir ran his free hand though Rachna's hair and tucked the loose strands behind her ear. He lovingly stroked the side of her bare neck. She turned her head to look at Kabir's face.

"Can you sing that song Kabir? Please?"

Kabir smiled at Rachna's request. "Which one? The one I sang for you on our honeymoon?"

Rachna nodded her head in affirmation. He placed a sweet kiss on her forehead as he began to sing.

As he finished humming, Kabir looked down towards Rachna, happy to see that she had fallen asleep. He continued to look at her, mesmerized by the innocent, peaceful smile that adorned her face at that moment. He smiled amorously himself when he realized that she had fallen asleep holding his hand tightly, resting her head on his chest, literally pinning him down underneath her body. He wished, just as he had sung, O re lamhe tu kahin mat ja...ho sake to umar bhar tham ja (This moment, please don't go anywhere... If possible, time just stop here). He wanted to treasure this lovely smile of hers forever, make sure that she was never unhappy again. He caressed her cheek softly as she slept, played with the loose strands of her hair that fell across his chest and lightly tickled his face. He cherished the feeling of just having her in his arms, thankful to God for sending her into his life.
