In what seems like a perfectly timed publicity stunt, Swastika Mukherjee who is making her debut in Detective Byomkesh Bakshi has been accused of shoplifting.
The actress, who was in Singapore to attend a Bengali film festival, had gone shopping along with her Bengali film director- friend Sumon Mukopadhyay when she was reportedly caught sneakily slipping in a pair of gold earrings into her handbag.
Our source reveals more about the incident that happened in Singapore. " Swastika was in Singapore to attend a film festival. She decided to head out to do a bit of shopping at a jewellery showroom in Singapore. This incident happened last weekend when the CCTV cameras in the shop caught her pocketing gold earrings worth $ 250. The footage showed her putting the piece of jewellery into her bag.
Though the shop owners are yet to report the incident to the police, they apparently got in touch with the festival authorites and informed them about the same. They have said that they don't want to make a big hue and cry about the incident as long as they get the earrings back. When Swastika was informed about this incident, the actress claims to have receipts of the purchases she made but she apparently couldn't furnish the receipts," says the source.
The actress is now reportedly planning to just return the jewellery item to avoid any further complications.
Incidentally, Singapore has a very strict law against shoplifting and if found guilty, Swastika could face a jail term.
The actress has also said that the item fell into her bag perhaps by mistake. While it could be termed as a publicity stunt, sources close to her insist she isn't the kind to stoop this low for publicity.
