Part 4:
A weird sound from the row behind them snapped his words and Raman mindlessly turned around to see the guy kissing his wife's palm continuously.
He turned back to Ishita in annoyance and added, "aisa paagalon ke beech aake main bhi..."
"Paagal nahi hai...They are in love Raman...Just because we don't..."
Her words got struck in her throat while he glanced at her trying to figure out why she left her words incomplete. Or probably he had already found it out
*************************************
He enquiringly looked at her, "Just because we don't kya???"
"kuch nahi" she shrugged off and turned to the window. She didn't want to explain it to him and earn another taunt from him. He would never understand this. Another big assumption from her side regarding her husband. Assumptions and ego seemed to rule their relationship, or rather ruin.
The bus started its journey soon after all settled in their seats. Romantic tamil and hindi songs kept playing to meet up the mood of the group. Ishita sat near the window and was enjoying the picturesque greenery all along the way. Soon the bus started climbing up to the hill top. There were sharp hair pin bends and steep ascents. The driver slowly and cautiously steered the bus along.
Ishita took the tablets as a precaution as she knew that the high range could cause nausea. He gave her water and also the cologne perfumed tissue to inhale.
The couple sitting in the row adjacent to them noticed all this and were smiling. Raman smiled too in a friendly manner. He noticed that the couple were the only middle aged couple in the whole group, probably on their second honeymoon.
By the time the bus rolled into the silver hills resort, Ishita was fast asleep and, her head resting on his shoulder and she was cuddling closer to him with her hands around his upper arms, probably the cool climate had made her do that unconsciously. She didn't know when she bridged the physical distance between them and snuggled close to him. She had deliberately kept it intact while awake. He knew she was quite exhausted and so didn't disturb her. He kept looking at her beautiful face that was perched close to his chest. She was sleeping peacefully like a small baby. There was a faint smile on her lips even when in deep sleep.
Surprising himself, he lightly kissed her hair and then hung back his head to his seat rest and closed his eyes. But he couldn't sleep as he wanted to keep a watch on her. There were jerks and sudden brakes all along and he had to make sure that those didn't hurt her. He knew that she was sleeping mindless of all those and subconsciously entrusted herself in his hands. He wrapped his arm around her and held her close all through the journey up.
Only when the bus came to a complete stand still inside the resort, he slightly shook her "Ishita...utto...hum resort paunch gaye"
She woke up with a startle realizing that she was cocooned into his arms. Mumbling a sorry for that, she looked around and saw that the bus was almost empty by then. Knotting up her messed up hair, she tried to stand up only hit her head on the top rack where the bags were kept. She clutched her head and fell into his lap.
The pain eased the next instant but then the sudden intimacy was causing havoc in both their bodies. In those moments, they literally forgot their state or where they were.
"hello hello...Romeo Juliet ka khel room mein jaakhe khelo...chalo...jaldi uthro bus se"
They snapped out as those words hit them. Raman and Ishita's close encounter would give anyone the impression that they were romancing. They felt embarrassed by the remark and also by the fact that all were witnessing their cute eye lock.
He taunted her trying to save the situation, "mere taang thodne ka iraadha hai kya? Utto"
She mumbled something to herself and stood up.
************************
Silver hills resorts sprawled over a huge area and was located on a small hillock, landscaped beautifully with lush green lawns, gardens, fountains and rock like elevations. There was a lake like water body which almost made the entire resort look like an island. The place was so silent and the silent tranquility would give peace to anybody and make every heart romantic.
It was almost 7 and the weather outside was very cold. It was getting colder with each passing minute. All the people from the bus were impatiently standing near the lobby area for their turn for getting the keys. Ishita and Raman were the last to join the group. They stood close to Mihika and Mihir who were almost in each other's embrace due the cold. Vibhu and his wife weren't any less. Raman looked at Mihir and Mihika, a little confused at the intimacy and closeness they shared. Mihika, in no angle seemed shying away from MIhir. Then what was her problem with...
His thoughts ceased when Ishita tugged his arm violently muttering, "kitne besharm ho aap...unnko aise kyun gurr rahe ho??"
"Jhansi ki rani, mujhe lecture matth sunao...waqt miley toh apni behen ko samjhaana...wahi hai jo..."
He stopped talking as he glanced at her.
Even in his indifferent mode, he noticed that Ishita was feeling cold. She was rubbing her hands furiously to warm up. She also tried keeping her palm on her ice cold cheeks to warm it up but nothing helped much. She gave up finally and hugged herself tightly. Raman stopped talking, seeing her plight and pulled out his jacket from the bag and covered her up, much to her surprise. But she silently allowed him to do it.
Two ladies who were standing nearby and were audience to the public display of affection commented rather loudly
"Jodi porutham pramaadham...Really made for each other couple!!"
[The first line is in tamil meaning..."awesome Jodi they make"]
Mihika was quick to hear it and she alerted Mihir to it also. Their teasing look and some mumbled comments didn't go unnoticed by Raman. He was in no mood to give them a befitting smack as reply or probably inwardly he liked it too.
A faint smile crept up his lips as he took the keys from the reception counter.
The cottages were spread across the vast area and were connected by stone laid pathways. Along the path, there were short trees and bushes which gave the whole place a forest like atmosphere. Though the cottages were well connected, the privacy was well maintained. It was a good 3- 5 minute walk between the nearest cottages.
Deciding to meet around 9 for dinner, they split and moved to their respective cottages.
Raman and Ishita entered their cottage and the clean interiors were indeed a relief. The well maintained cottage welcomed them in. As Ishita looked around, something caught her attention which rather made her sport an upset look. Her frown caught his attention. He enquired, "Jhansi ki rani ko ab kya hua? koyi lecture dena hai kya?"
"Ek hi bed hai...aur couch bhi nahi...bas yeh sofa hai"
And the sofa was also in the living room and not the bedroom.
Raman looked at her teasingly, "honeymoon suites aise hi hote hai!"
Ishita, without forethought, in a mock reflex, "is it? yeh meri pehli honeymoon hai na? isiliye jaanti nahi thi"
It wasn't clear if it was a taunt or a genuine reply from her. He did smile at that but then he couldn't stop wondering if she meant that it wasn't his first honeymoon. But in the first place, she thought that they were on honeymoon which made set flight to his teasing mode.
He ignored the taunt and connection to his first marriage and picked the second point, "matlab tum yahaan mere saath honeymoon pe aayi ho?"
He had, by then walked closer to her making her feel a little uneasy. Rather than the closeness, it was his teasing words and glance that made her feel awkward.
In an attempt to escape, she voiced stepping back, "main Mihika se milke aathi hoom...I will check if they have settled well in their room"
Before she walked further, she found herself grabbed back. He caught her wrist and in a moment, she was nailed between him and the wall. He tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ears and voiced, "Yeh ghar nahi hai ke tum sabke khayaal rakho...They can handle it..."
She looked at him inquiringly first at his action but then looked away from him muttering, "Phir bhi jaake dekti hoom...mujhe MIhika se baat..."
His words snapped her short, "Chali jaana lekin pehle mere sawaal ka jawaab dho..."
She tried to act ignorant to his prior question, "kaise sawaal?"
He let a sarcastic smile before replying, "kya tum iss trip ko honeymoon banaana chaahti ho?"
She acted undeterred by that as she hid the slow blush which tried to creep in.
"jawaab aapko dena hoga Raman...aap laaye teh mujhe yahaan...You tell me...Was it for a honeymoon?"
She caught him in his own words and he was too egoistic to let go of his inner desires. Though both their hearts screamed a yes to each other's questions, their stubborn mind refuted it strongly.
"NO"
His ego voiced it out stubbornly and he continued ignoring her staring yet hurt eyes, "Main sirf Mihir keliye yahaan hoom..."
Now her eyes demanded an explanation to this. He stepped back from her and added, "uss bevakoof ko lagta hai ke tum lecture dene mein maahir ho toh usske help kardogi..."
She looked totally confused now, "Mihir ka help?? Lecture?? Yeh sab kya paheliyon mein baat kar rahe ho Raman?"
"Paheli nahi sab tumaare behen ka kiya kara hai...usse samjhao ke shaadi ke baadh pati ko khush rakhna seekhe..."
That confused her more and she flared up, "matlab?"
"Matlab ke woh Mihir ko paas nahi aane deh rahi hai toh tum usse samjhavo ke shaadi ke baadh yeh sab normal hai aur darrne ki ya sharmaane ki zaroorat nahi..."
Ishita glared at him in total disbelief that of all people, he expected her to talk to Mihika about this. The uncomfortable topic sure brought shyness in her but she hid all such vulnerable subtle emotions behind the much stronger forced anger which she brought forward openly.
She didn't say it aloud but he heard her mind saying "cheee" in total annoyance about the whole topic being laid before her. She turned her face away from him while he replied to her, "Ho madrasan...yeh tum behenon ka chee waala attitude hum patiyon ka band baja rakha hai!"
She turned to him when she heard that, "Mihir ka samajh aatha hai mujhe...but HUM patiyon' ka kya matlab?? Didn't you make it clear to me that you are marrying me just for Ruhi and nothing else? Phir ab aap saara dosh mere attitude pe kyun dhaal rahe ho??"
In an impulse, he blurted out, "haan tab kaha tha...but is there a rule that we can't change?"
He had said that too fast and she couldn't believe she heard it right.
"Kya?"
Her probing made him conscious of the words which slipped out of his mouth. He instantly recoiled back and patched it up.
"Kya kya? Jao jaake ready ho jao...We are late for the dinner"
He had once again changed the much needed topic and suppressed all his words.
He went out into the living room shutting the door behind him. She was more than confused at what to make out of all this.
And she couldn't stop scolding Mihika too, "Yeh Mihika ko kya hua? Sharam aur darr??? kuch toh gadbad hai...mujhe usse baat karna hoga?
They walked to the restaurant in total silence. None wanted to speak about what transpired earlier or was it just him? She couldn't understand what stopped him. Well even he wasn't sure of what stopped him from just accepting it to her that he wanted to complete their marriage in every essence. And yes he wanted to make this trip their real honeymoon. Was it so difficult to tell her that?
Was it so tough to pull her into his arms and tell what he felt about her? Yes perhaps, in the deepest of hearts both knew that this wasn't mere lust, desire or physical attraction but love and both were having real problems in accepting that they were experiencing love all over again for the second time in life. Or perhaps their fear of failure and rejection was stopping them.
The restaurant wasn't silent. Most tables were occupied with young couples. Mihir had booked a big table for them. Raman and Ishita became non-existent for each other, the moment they joined Mihir and Mihika. It was their defense mechanism against the volcano of emotions that brew inside them. Raman continued his talk with Mihir while Ishita stuck to Mihika.
As they finished dinner, Ishita was waiting for a chance to talk to Mihika.
She and Mihika stepped out of the restaurant while Raman was in some call and Mihir was waiting to talk to him about something related to office.
Ishita took some time to open up the matter but even then she couldnt get to it,
"Mihika, Raman ne mujhse kuch kaha tha..."
Mihika exactly knew what was coming up but then she conveniently pretended ignorance, "kya akka?? Jiju ne I love you bola kya?"
Ishita glared at her trying to find what she was hiding behind that naughty question, "Mihikaaa...yeh saare games na tum apne jiju se khel sakte ho...mujhse nahi...sacch sacch batha ke tum aur Mihir kya planning kar rahe ho, haan?"
Mihika knew that tricking her sister is no child's play.
"Haan akka, hum planning hi kar rahe hai...Its for you and jiju akka...kab tak aap dono aise..."
Ishita snapped her words, "Mihika, abi abi tumaari shaadi hui hai...aur yeh sab kya leke beite ho? Mere baat chod..."
Mihika chipped in, "akka please...aap baat ko taalo matth...shaadi toh aapki bhi hui hai na? then why aren't you behaving like that? What's stopping you akka?"
"Mihika main tumhe samjhaane aayi thi..."
Mihika cut short her akka's words, "parr samajhna toh aapko hai akka"
Ishita turned away suppressing a tear which had flooded her eyes, "Mere samajhne se kya hoga Mihika...tumaare jiju shaayad yeh..."
Her words dissolved in her throat as she herself wasn't sure what Raman thought about this.
"Jiju ko bas ek ishaara deh dho akka...unnka nature toh aap jaante ho na? khulke kabhi kuch kahenge nahi...aap thoda compromise karo...dono ziddh pakadenge toh kaise chalega?"
Before they could continue their conversation, Mihir and Raman joined them.
Back in their room, Ishita's mind continuously wondered about what Mihika had told her and about what hint could she possibly give him.
Raman lay in the bed and noticed that Ishita was wondering about where to sleep. He saw her moving towards the living room sofa. The heater effect was less there and the blanket was a single big one on the bed. He knew that she would suffer from the freezing cold if she slept on the sofa.
As she stood mid way wondering what to do, he said, "apne dimaag pe zyaadha zor matth dhaalo...yahaan bed pe so jao"
Her heart beamed up as he said that. May be this was the hint that Mihika mentioned!
But sinking back all that joy of hers, he added misunderstanding her hesitation to come to the bed, "Ho Jhansi ki rani, maine honeymoon ke baare mein mazaag kiya tha...mera aisa koyi iraadha nahi...toh yahaan aaraam se so jao...I won't touch you"
Her tears were unstoppable when he finished that. It wasn't disappointment about what she thought and what he said but a mere emptiness in their relationship which she felt at those moments. He felt that she feared any progress in their relationship and she couldn't bare her heart out to him. Both were in such points which were totally extreme to each other. Like parallel lines, they seemed impossible to meet or cross paths.
He switched off the lights gesturing her to take her place comfortably. She wanted to scream out, or angrily reject his offer and take the sofa but she did neither. She slowly walked to the bed deciding not to broach on this further.
