HISTORY OF BHAI DOOJ

Long time back, Surya, the sun God, was married to a beautiful princess called Samjna (also prounced as Sangya). In course of a year, she presented Him with twins. The twins were christened Yama, and Varni or Yamuna, and they grew up together.
However, Samjna, after some time, were unable to bear the brilliance of her husband, decided to go back to earth. However, she left her shadow, Chaya, her exact replica, behind, so that to Surya, it would appear that she is still there. However, Chhaya turned out to be a cruel stepmother and was very unkind to the twins. She soon gave birth to her own children, and convinced Surya to drive out Samjna's twins from the heaven. Varni fell to earth and became the river Yamuna, and Yama went to the underworld (hell) and became the King of Death.

Years passed. Varni married a handsome prince and was haapy in her life but she missed her brother wanted to see him. Yama, too, missed his sister and decided one day to visit her.

After hearing the news of her brother's visit, Varni prepared a great feast in his honor. It was two days after Deepavali, so her home was already decorated. Yama, too, was delighted by his sister's loving welcome, and brother and sister spent a pleasant evening in each other's company, after their long period of separation.

When it was time for Yama to return to his kingdom in hell, he turned to his sister and said, "Dear Varni, you have welcomed me so lovingly. But I did not bring you a gift. Ask, therefore, for something and it will be yours." So inreturn Varni asked from him that all brothers should remember their sisters on this day and visit them if they can, and that, on this day, all sisters should pray for the happiness of their brothers. This is how the custom of Bhai-duj, or bhai-phonta, came into practice.

Another myth for celebrating this occassion is that on this day Lord Krishna, after assassinating the Narakasura demon, goes to his sister Subhadra who welcomes him with the lamp, flowers and sweets, and mark his forehead with holy protective spot.

Bhai Dooj Legends

Bhai Dooj is an auspicious occasion which is celebrated with great fervour and happiness all over the country. Brothers and sisters eagerly wait for this festival which strengthens the bond of love and care between them by recalling all the sweet memories of childhood and spending some time with each other. At the time of tika ceremony, sisters pray to God for the long life and well being of their brothers and at the same time, brothers vow to protect their sisters in any difficulty and to keep them happy till the end of their life. Sisters who are not able to meet at the time of Bhai Dooj send tika along with the gifts and puja thali to their brothers. And like every festival, this one has a beginning too, one which is truly engulfed in mythologies, more than one, with each narrating a different story as how this festival came to be celebrated.

The Legend Of Yamraja and Yamuna
This is the most famous legend which is linked with the celebration of Bhai Dooj. According to it, once, Yamraja went to meet his sister Yamuna after a long time. When he reached there, she was very happy to see him and put tika on his forehead, performing aarti, and offered him sweets to eat and gave him a small gift as a token of love. She treated him with appetizing meal. Yamraja was so pleased to see the love and care of his sister that he declared that any brother, who receives tilak from his sister on this day, will never be sent to the hell and will live a long life. Since then the custom of celebrating Bhai Dooj started and this is why it is also known as Yama Dwitiya.

The Legend Of Lord Krishna And Subhadra
Another legend is linked with Lord Krishna when he went to meet his sister Subhadra after killing the demon Narakasura. Subhadra was very happy to see her brother and she gave a warm welcome to him with flowers and by performing aarti and putting tika on his forehead as a mark of protection and by offering him sweets to eat. This legend then gave birth to the festival of Bhai Dooj, stating that sisters, no matter what, will pray for the well being and long life of their brothers.

The Legend Of Lord Mahavira
This legend is related to Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. When he attained nirvana, his brother King Nandivardhan started missing him and became very much upset. At that time he was consoled by his sister Sudarshana, who took proper care of her brother. Since that time, brothers started giving love and respect to their sisters. On the auspicious day of Bhai Dooj, sisters are given beautiful gifts and honour as a token of love.
