Alya is obsessed with the idea of Manik because she wants to hold on to her dream which she lived at the naive age of 12 or even less. The desperation comes because she has believed in that fantasy , make-believe world for 7 long years. Hence her reluctance which you term as desperation. To her the proper closure would be when she see Manik moving on with his life with someone else. Till then , she would like to hold on to his illusion because that is the only thing she ever thought of as her future.

Dhruv is a passive person , he is scared to express his feelings and to see him crushing on somebody is a big deal. It's not frivolous , for a closed individual to even experience something like crush is a life-changing thing. He wants her and there is nothing wrong with it. Like Alya he is also holding on to the idea of Nandu . Which is endearing.

If you would have carefully read I said, individual baggage of both Alya and Dhruv, no comparisons but parallels, and that is why I said rather than dumping anyone else or even each other on them, you do need to give them time to grow into their own and have their own realization. The growth for both of them begins with their heart-break, Alya for Manik and Dhruv for Nandu . Together yes, because the object of their affections ,happen to be falling for each other.
