Chapter 17:
Rachna spent the entirety of the next day planning the details for the vow renewal ceremony with Pihu and Sneha. Both Murli and Akash had gone to the hospital, for Murli had a long list of appointments lined up with his patients, while Akash had an important surgery to attend to. Despite Rachna's protests of wanting to have a simple ceremony with just close family and friends, Sneha had insisted on organizing it as a lavish event. Rachna had not put forth much of an argument for she knew that it had always been Sneha's wish to organize her neice-cum-daughter's wedding as an extravagant ceremony. Given that they had just a little over two months to plan everything, they started off by brainstorming the guest list to estimate the number of people that they should expect to make the arrangements for. In just a few short minutes, Rachna had realized just how big this event was going to end up being, for the list had already reached up to 250 guests and that just encompassed what Sneha had described as "close" family and friends. By the time they finished the guest list, four hours later, Rachna had typed up a document with 1000 names. The majority of these people were acquaintances of Sneha and Akash, as well as of her mother's and father's.
"Sneha mausi, don't you think this list is a bit excessive? I mean, 1000 people? And truth be told, I don't know about 80% of them."
"Rachna, I told you that I want your wedding to be one that people talk about for years to come. Shail didi planned Pihu's wedding all by herself because I was so busy with my work commitments back then and I never got the chance to do all this for Gunjan or you. So now that I have the chance, let me live my dreams."
"Okay, I guess it's fine."
Rachna agreed reluctantly, but she was getting more and more apprehensive about what Kabir's reaction to all this would be. He was never one to show off their relationship, which is why their wedding almost two years ago had been such a simple affair. The three of them had just finished finalizing the guest list and started researching possible venues when Rachna's phone rang. Seeing that it was Kabir's call, Rachna moved away from everyone before she answered the phone.
"Hi Kabir."
"Hey Rachna. How are you? Busy?"
Rachna rubbed her forehead and pushed back the loose strands of hair from her face. "Uhhh yeah. I've been sitting in the den all day with mausi ji and Pihu di planning our vow renewal ceremony."
"Oh, well by the exasperation in your voice it sounds like you're not enjoying it. Is everything okay?"
"Yeah everything is fine. But let's just say that this event is going to be much different than what you and I had originally thought."
"Okay, you're getting me worried now. What exactly is going on?"
"Kabir, we can talk about this more when we meet. Anyways, was there any particular reason for your call?"
"Oh, well yeah. Actually I was just wondering if you could be ready to leave for the mehndi ceremony a little bit early. Chirag called me this afternoon and he said that they are planning a little cocktail hour for close friends right before the mehndi event. He invited me to come. Didn't Chaya tell you about it?"
"Oh yeah she messaged me this morning but I didn't get a chance to read her message since I was a bit preoccupied. I guess this is what it must have been about. So yeah, I'll go get ready now so we can make it on time."
"Sounds good. I'll see you in a bit my love. Bye."
"Bye baby."
Hanging up the call, Rachna notified every one of the change in plans for the evening and went to go get ready.
--------------
By the time Kabir arrived at the Garg residence, Rachna was all dressed and ready to go. For the mehndi ceremony, she had decided to wear maroon colored knee-length anarkali with full net sleeves. There was gold embroidery around the rounded neckline and along the bottom of the dress. Meanwhile her dupatta was in a contrasting gold color with maroon embroidery all along the perimeter. She had chosen to go light with the accessories by wearing some simple gold hoop earrings and a gold ring, which had been gifted to her by her mother on her 18th birthday. She had curled her hair and pulled it into a loose ponytail, leaving a few strands out to frame her face. Kabir was speechless when he laid eyes on Rachna, as she walked down the stairs from her room. She looked simple and innocent, very much the way she had looked when Kabir had first fallen in love with her. Meanwhile, he wore a simple black shirt overlaid with a fitted grey vest and dark wash jeans. Thankfully, no eye brows would be raised, as they had made it a point to not color coordinate their outfits today.
Rachna had hurried out of the house with Kabir before Sneha or Pihu could make too much of a fuss about them. On the way to Chaya's house, Rachna filled Kabir in with the details of all the planning that was happening with regards to their vow renewal ceremony. To her pleasant surprise, Kabir had taken all the news in stride.
"It's fine with me Rachna. I can understand how Sneha mausi must be feeling right now. It's every mother's dream to marry her daughter off in the most lavish way possible. So I think we should let her do what she wants. And we can just be thankful that we are getting a chance to restart our marriage with the blessings of our elders."
"Oh my dear hubby, why are you always so understanding and right all the time?"
Kabir just shook his head shyly and continued to drive.
-------------
Arriving at Chaya's house, Rachna walked in first and Kabir came in a few minutes after her to avoid raising any suspicions about the two of them. Just as Chirag had said, the cocktail hour consisted only of a dozen or so close friends of both the bride and groom. Kabir knew most of the people from Chirag's side for they were all friends from college, while Rachna knew everyone from Chaya's side. It was a relaxed atmosphere where everyone was just happy to be a part of the soon-to-be married couple's happiness. Rachna was sitting and chatting with Chaya and a few other girls when they all heard a loud noise from across the room. Looking for the source of the disturbance, they were all shocked to find Kabir engaged in a brawl with someone. Rachna rushed over to Kabir with Chaya following closely behind her.
"How dare you say that? You filthy scumbag! You ba*tard!"
Kabir punched the guy standing in front of him, while Chirag and Karan tried to hold him back. But it was to no avail, for Kabir was just too enraged to be held back at that moment. He pushed them off and threw a few more punches. It was only when Rachna held Kabir's arm and screamed for him to stop did he relent. While everyone's gaze was on Kabir, demanding an explanation for his behavior, he was in no mood to explain to anyone; hence, he merely stormed out of the room before anyone could say anything. Chaya asked Chirag to explain what had caused this fight, but Chirag himself didn't have a clue.
"I have no idea what came over him Chaya. I've never seen him act like this before. He is the gentlest person I know, so I don't know what could have possibly prompted him to behave this way."
Everyone then looked towards Nikhil, the guy that Kabir was hitting, for an explanation. He stood up and tenderly touched his lip, which had split open and was bleeding. He simply asked for some water and a first aid kit, which Rhea promptly delivered to him. In the meantime, Karan went to go talk to Kabir and find out what had happened. However, he returned a few minutes later with the news that Kabir had left, as his car was no longer parked in the driveway. This caused Rachna to become even more worried. She excused herself and tried calling him, but of course he didn't pick up her call. In fact, he seemed to have turned his phone off, which only made Rachna more concerned for him.
"Rachna, is everything okay?" Chaya came up behind Rachna and put a hand on her friend's shoulder.
Turning around, Rachna quickly changed her expression of concern into one of indifference. "Yeah Chaya. Everything is fine. Actually Pihu di was calling me so I was just talking to her. Anyways, come let's go inside. You should start getting your mehndi done now."
----------------
Three hours later, Rachna sat in the taxi and frantically began calling Kabir again. She had forcibly stayed at Chaya's mehndi ceremony for the past three hours and tried to act completely normal so her friend's special day would not be further spoiled. But her mind had been preoccupied with thoughts of Kabir. She had briefly talked to Karan in private a little earlier to see if he knew anything about what had happened or where Kabir could possibly be, but it was no use for Karan had no idea.
"Karan, do you know what happened back there? Why did Kabir get so angry?"
"I have no idea bhabhi. Chirag and I were getting drinks at the bar when we saw bhai hitting Nikhil. We immediately rushed over to stop him but he just wouldn't listen. And I tried asking Nikhil also but he refuses to say anything. In fact, he just left a few minutes ago to go to the hospital; I think he said his nose might be broken. But don't worry Rachna Bhabhi. I'm going out right now to look for bhai. I will call you if I find out anything about him."
After saying that, Karan had left to search for Kabir.
-------------
Rachna decided to call Karan now and ask him if he found out anything.
"Hello Karan. Karan did you find Kabir?"
Rachna heard a disappointed voice answer back. "No bhabhi. I checked his hotel, called some of his old friends that he is still in touch with, but I haven't been able to track him down. Let me look around at some other places and I'll call you back."
Hanging up the phone, Rachna's heart sank. Tears filled her eyes as awful thoughts about something untoward happening to Kabir filled her mind. She arrived home in a short while and immediately grabbed her car keys to go look for Kabir herself. She could hear Sneha's worried voice call out behind her, but at that moment nothing was more important for Rachna than finding Kabir.

How was it? What do think of this new twist?

I'm leaning towards him making some unseemly comment about our Rachana, but will wait see.Thank you for the PMLooking forward to the next update!
