CHAPTER -6 OPEN WOUNDS
Tejawat continued to swirl the ice in the amber liquid as his men dragged her into the dingy room. He instructed them to tie her hands up and then leave the room. After his men left, he sat back with his drink, intently staring at the tied-up, near lifeless woman in front of him. After taking his time to finish the drink, he slowly got up and walked towards her. Bending down to sit beside her, he grabbed her chin and lifted it so that her eyes met his.
He admired this woman. He had always admired the fire in her. Despite working under him, she was the only to have ever stood up against him. At one point of time, he had even tried to make her his. He was struck by her beauty, her pride, her determination. But she had refused and refused firmly and he was content with her working under his feet. Over the years she had fiercely protected her sister, letting no man touch her chaste form. Even now, her eyes blazed into his as she looked at him with controlled fury, despite her broken and tied-up condition.
"Nandini" he whispered slowly as he twirled a strand of her hair between his fingers. "You really shouldn't have done it. Haven't I taken care of you and your sister all these years? And you dare to steal from me?" he said his voice becoming threateningly caustic.
Suddenly yanking her hair and bunching it into his fingers, he pulled her face close to his and snarled against her mouth, "How dare you steal from me? Don't you know who I am you bitch!! How did you even think of stealing my hard earned money?"
Slowly, her face broke into a smile and then she began laughing in pure mirth, while he still held onto her hair with a furious expression on his face. "Your money? Your hard earned money? I didn't see you sell your body every night to earn it" she finally hissed at him. "Anyway didn't I already return it to you the day you threatened Paro. What more do you want from me?" she asked.
It was Tejawat's turn to smile. Loosening his grip on her hair he said, "The matter doesn't just end with me getting the money back. What matters more is that you actually tried to deceive me. We don't want you becoming an example to the other girls now, do we? They saw what you did to me and now they shall witness what I can do to get back what's rightfully mine. You see, I don't mind clipping the wings of one odd bird to keep the rest in the cage. Mark my words Nandini, you have a very special place in my hell and you are not leaving it anytime soon."
"But let's talk about something else for now. Do you know where your sister is? As far as I know she's in the house of an unknown man. Can you think of the things that he could be doing to her?"
Looking back at Tejawat without a hint of fear, Nandini replied "You don't have to worry about my sister Thakur Saa. I have taught my sister well. She knows how to protect herself. Also, if she's in the house an unknown man, I am not the least bit worried as long as she is out of your clutches and this hell hole."
After gazing at her determined face which refused to change the resolute expression, Tejawat let go of her and said "Is that so? Well let's just hope that she doesn't blurt anything about me to anyone, or the consequences will not be good either for her or you" and then released her.
Getting back on his feet he instructed his men to tie her back in the cellar. Looking at his leaving footsteps, Nandini hoped that Tejawat did not sense the rising fear in her and prayed to Bholenath with immense fervor to protect her sister, wherever she was.

Next morning:
Opening her eyes to the streaming sunlight, Paro got up and sat up on her bed. Uttering a prayer of thanks to Bholenath, she looked at Prakriti sleeping peacefully beside her, smiled and patted her head. Prakriti had become a younger sister to her, whom she had started to cherish immeasurably. Getting off the bed she proceeded to freshen herself and then walked towards the kitchen. She had decided to cook breakfast for everyone today as a small token of gratitude. She would cook her favorite recipe which her mother had taught her. Another reason that she decided to cook, which she repeatedly refused but it kept coming back into her mind again and again was she wanted Rudra to taste the food that she would cook. Naively, she hoped that it would reduce his anger towards her. Irrational as the thought was, she decided she would go ahead with it.
As she made her way towards the kitchen, she passed the verandah where the sight before her managed to make her forget every ingredient of the recipe that she had taken a long time to recall. Shutting her eyes tightly she walked back and hid behind the curtain. After taking a moment to calm her breath, she slowly peeked outside to look again at Rudra, naked from waist above, going about his morning workout.
It was as if she had stopped breathing as she continued to look at his form. With every flex of his hard muscle, her heartbeat quickened. She took her own sweet time gazing at him, forgetting every other thing that existed. Since his back was towards her, she admired his broad shoulders and stiff back which finished into a perfect taut midriff. The muscles in his back contracted with every move of his hand. Her fingers around the curtain tightened as the minutes passed. Turning around, he pushed his wet hair out of his eyes before continuing the routine. Going further behind the curtain, Paro continued to peek despite knowing what she was doing would land her in trouble. For a second, she thought he could see her and covered herself with the curtain and waited with bated breath. Slowly coming out again, she continued to appreciate the man before her eyes. Her eyes began to pan him from top to bottom. She was lost in his stubbled jaw and firm mouth before her eyes travelled south and something deep in her began to stir. Her mouth ran dry as she gazed at his hard, strong chest with his pectorals sprinkled with fine black hair. She then proceeded to appreciate his strong arms and remembered the time when he had carried her in the very arms so effortlessly. As her gaze further lowered, her heart began to thud faster and her body seemed to react strangely when his hard abdomen came into view. Suddenly the temperature had risen and so had the heat in her body. But try as she might, she couldn't tear her eyes away from him as he began to pour water over himself to get rid of the sweat. Clasping a hand over her mouth, before she let a sound escape, she ran away from there and into the kitchen where she gripped the stall to steady herself.
"What had that been all about" she questioned herself as her heart continued to beat frantically. This was the first time she had experienced something like this. Paro was smart enough to never fall for any man. Till now she had always come across the worst possible kind and she had assumed that every other man would be the same. She knew that something about Rudra was different, but even she couldn't explain the last few minutes.
She turned around hearing a noise behind her and saw Mala walking into the kitchen. Looking at her frantic form, Mala was immediately concerned.
"What happened Paro?" she asked cupping Paro's face. "Why are you so panicked? And your face is all red. Did something happen... Tell me now." She continued.
"Nothing happened Maasa" Paro stammered. "Nothing at all.. It's just that.. it's just..." she paused trying to think of a reason. "It's just that I came running into the kitchen, that's why I am out of breath." She finished feebly.
"Why did you have to run into the kitchen?" asked Mala flabbergasted.
"That.. I .. I actually.. I wanted to cook for all of you today, so I was very excited. I wanted everything ready and perfect, so I came running into the kitchen to start off early" said Parvati managing a tiny smile.
Running a hand on Paro's head and looking at her lovingly, Mala said, "You don't have to do that Paro. You are our guest here. All you need to do is get well and take care of yourself. You don't have to work in the house"
"No Maasa!" Paro said calming herself, "I don't consider this a work at all. This is only a small token of gratitude. In fact, I wish I could do more to help you with the work. Please let me cook for you today and don't worry I can cook well. I promise it will be delicious."
Smiling Mala finally agreed and said, "Alright Paro, the kitchen is yours today. I can't wait to taste the food made by your hands." Continuing to smile, Mala left the kitchen and Paro beamed in delight.
Later in the morning:
Paro wouldn't stop smiling as she made the bed. Everybody had loved the breakfast. Maasaand Prakriti wouldn't stop praising it and had even had second helpings. Even Rudra had admitted that the breakfast was good. After tasting a morsel, he had looked up at her said that the food tasted really good in bashful tones, earning him stunned stares from his mother and sister. He had eaten everything on his plate, without making any eye contact with her throughout the meal. Looking at him scarfing down his food had filled Paro with immense happiness.
As she was erasing the crease off a pillow, Prakriti came bounding into the room and yelled, "Parvati Jija. My favourite hero's movie was on the tv. He looked so handsome and he has such an amazing smile. I think I am in love. It's true, I am in love" she said continuing to swoon.
Paro chuckled at the bounding girl before her. Holding on to her and calming her down, she said, "Pagli, this isn't love. Love is so much deeper."
"Acha Jija, so why don't you tell me what love is all about" said Prakriti playfully.
Despite her refusal, Prakriti egged her on so Paro finally gave in.
"Love cannot be defined in a mere few words Prakriti. Its meaning is deeper than the oceans. It's a feeling more powerful than any other. My Jija used to say that everyone will find love in some form or other. It brings peace to your heart. It changes you, it makes you a better person." Stopping, Paro smiled looking at Prakriti who was now hanging on to every word of hers. "Love is patient and kind. It'll help you cross bridges. It makes you take that leap of faith that you have been forever afraid of. All you have to do is wait patiently and welcome it with open arms when the time comes. It even-"
Before she could say another word the door to the room banged open and Rudra yelled, "SHUT UP!"
Frightened, both Paro and Prakriti stood up as he came in seething in anger. Paro was shocked. She had never seen him this angry, not even on the day when she had let Tejawat escape. She quivered as he moved towards her.
"Stop spouting nonsense. All these great words that you use to talk about love are meaningless and foolish" He yelled, his face shaking with rising anger. "Love is useless. A baseless emotion with no truth to it. It gives you nothing but pain, it cuts through you and hurts you. Stop giving speeches about something as pointless. It's nothing but pain. What rubbish are you blabbering? Love helps you?" he asked her with mock laughter.
"Well sorry to burst your bubble, but it's nothing but a shameless, purposeless emotion which gives you nothing except agony and torment." he said with pure spite.
With his burning eyes still on Paro, he continued, "I don't care what you think or what your sister says, but I don't want you feeding lies to my sister. That I shall not tolerate and you better remember it." He roared in disgust.
Before the two girls could come out of shock, he turned around and walked away banging the door behind him. Because of the loud bang, a framed photo on the wall behind the door crashed on to the floor, making the girls jump in fright. Paro, closest to the door, bent down and began to pick up the pieces of glass off the floor. She was still in shock and didn't utter a word as she cleaned up.
As she picked the picture up, she saw it was of the Ranawat family- Rudra, his mother Mala and his sister, Prakriti- all smiling towards the camera. Paro then noticed another woman beside Prakriti, whom she failed to recognize. She had never seen the woman at the Haveli.
"Who is this in the photo with you Prakriti?" she asked
Prakriti, who was still staring at the door, turned towards Paro and looked at the photographed. Her expression darkened when she looked at the woman. Taking the picture in her hands, she sighed and replied, "That is Laila." She said in clipped tones. "She's Bhaisa's WIFE."
