Bijoya Dashami falls on the tenth day of Navratri and marks the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasur.
The demons tried to capture Heaven and defeat the Gods. Under the leadership of Mahashasur the other demons got successful in defeating the Gods. All the Gods then joined their energies together and Goddess Durga emerged with ten hands. All the Gods gave their weapon to Maa Durga. Riding on a lion Maa Durga killed Mahishasur on the tenth day of the battle.
In West Bengal,Tripura, Assam etc Durga Puja is celebrated for five days namely Shosti,Saptami,Asthami,Nabami and Dashami. On the day of Dashami Maa Durga along with Lord Ganesh, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kartik,Goddess Saraswati are immersed in a water body.
On this day women bid farewell to Goddess Durga with sindoor,paan and sweets. After that the ladies put sindoor on each others parting in the hair and then they apply sindoor on each others face. This is popularly known as "Sindoor-Khela" played only by married ladies.
