Graham Onions struck twice in his first over as India struggled to 63-3 at lunch on day two at Chelmsford, responding to England's 413-8d.
Onions trapped Wasim Jaffer lbw and had VVS Laxman caught behind before Dinesh Karthik edged Stuart Broad.
Sachin Tendulkar (37no) then ensured there were no further alarms with a barrage of boundaries off Onions.
Earlier Tim Bresnan finished on 126 and Chris Tremlett 32 as the hosts moved on from their overnight 379-8 with ease.
This three-day affair is the tourists' last warm-up before the first of the three Tests against England gets under way on Thursday at Lord's.
Onions' wickets put him in the spotlight after fellow paceman Stephen Harmison aggrevated a groin injury playing for Durham, which puts the latter's participation in England's first Test against India next week in doubt.
