"Love has made me a better actress"

Juhi Parmar is busy with her Kumkum (the popular soap on Star TV) shoot at the Kamalistan studio. Looking radiant in a blue saree the actress takes a break to talk to shaaditimes. "It's been a long day and still to go. We are planning to work till 2.30 am today!" she says. "I came to Mumbai 7 years back from Jaipur to follow my dreams. I had always wanted to be an actress. I went through auditions like everyone and worked very hard to establish myself in the TV industry," she reflects with a smile.

How has Kumkum changed your life?
Kumkum has made me a known face today. It has helped me to realise my potential as an actress and has helped me to grow as an actress. It has also given me a lot of confidence in myself and I am happy with the success that it has given me. I am not ruling out films but I will only opt for it if I get a good role.

In Kumkum you sport the same look even after a 20 year generation leap..
Well, frankly speaking I am not too happy with the generation leap in Kumkum but a daily soap has to go on a generation leap with time or else it will be boring. So I have accepted it. But I have decided against change of my costume style, make - up or grey hair because I feel people are more aware about beauty now and they maintain themselves so well that there is no need to add grey streaks to show you are old. They wear colourful sarees and colour their hair to look best and carry it off well too. Today even 40 - 50 year olds do not appear to be that old as they keep up with the latest trends. Even I would not like to look old when I am 50. So I think my look in Kumkum is not improbable.

You got the Best Patni Award on Star Parivaar. What do you think are the qualities that make the Best Patni?
To be the best patni you need to understand your partner and stop cribbing and nagging for small things in life. You should understand that life is not as rosy as a dream so you should be patient. This will give your hubby a breather and he will love you for that. Moreover trusting your husband is the bottom line for a successful marriage.

Are you like Kumkum in your real life?
I am not very much like Kumkum. I do not dress up in a conventional way. I am more like any regular girl and am more comfortable in jeans and tees. However if you do not go by the mere appearances, there are some basic similarities between my reel and real self. Just like Kumkum I am a complete no-nonsense person who would always stand by truth. I cannot stand injustice and will always speak up if I see something wrong happening. Moreover family comes first and I have not forgotten the values which my parents have imbibed in me.

Are you planning to get married?
I do not plan anything in life because I feel in most cases things happen when you are busy making plans and you are so preoccupied that you miss it. Yes I would like to settle down when I come across my Mr Right. I have full faith in the institution of marriage.
I believe that commitment is an absolute essential and live-in relationships are just for convenience. Every relationship needs time and effort but in most cases of live-ins it is found that if the partners do not gel they just move apart. They do not even try to make it work. Moreover I am a traditional at heart and would not do anything that would hurt the sentiments of my parents.

5 qualities you would look for in your man?
Loyalty - Infidelity is completely unacceptable. Respect - He should value my decisions too. Nothing can be one way. Sense of humour - He should be able to take things lightly and should not be very serious about every small things in life. Understanding.
  1. Trust: He should trust me and love me for the person I am.

Would you prefer someone from the same industry?
Whether he is from the industry or not does not matter if we are compatible. Yes there are some plus points to it that he would understand my erratic working hours and expect less time from me, but this won't limit my choice completely.

What do you feel about arranged marriages?
I don't believe in arranged marriages. I think in an arranged marriage you are compelled to love the person to whom you are married and what if you are not able to love him? That's quite scary. You have to make compromises in marriage no matter what but while in a love marriage you would make them happily as you know your partner loves you, in an arranged marriage you would be forced to do it for the sake of society. Anything which is forced upon you proves to be a burden and cannot run longer.

Has your friendship with Hussain remained the same after his marriage?
Hussain was always married for me. From the time I came to know him he was in love with Tina. And the way he is devoted to her I would often pull his leg by saying that he was born married! (laughs) Our relationship has not changed at all, except that Hussain is now officially married. I also share a very beautiful friendship with Tina and we have fun together apart from Hussain.

Where will we find you 10 years down the line?
10 years down the line I would most likely be married and still acting. I would not like to give up acting after marriage.

Have you ever fallen in love?
Ya I have been in love before but I don't want to speak about it. It was a great feeling and everyone should fall in love at least once in life to understand the panorama of human emotions which remains unexplored otherwise. Love has made me a richer human being and has helped me to empathise with other people's feelings. Also, I think it has helped me to be a better actress because since I have undergone the pain I know how to portray it for my characters on screen.

What do you do when you are not acting?
When I am not acting, which happens very rarely, I catch up on sleep and then go out with my friends for shopping.

Parting words for readers
Love me as you always have. Thanks a lot.
