The Article below appeared in todays edition of Mumbai Mirror. Question is

Who deserves Pension! Who all do we subsidise. Not sure if this topic had been debated earlier here.

I wish I could raise a toast to Taj's win with friends and family. But it's impossible on a Rs 400 govt pension

Kolkata: The ostentatious Taj Mahal and a dingy slum? Not much in common there, you'd think — but when the marble mausoleum in Agra was named one of the New Wonders of the World, the last of the Mughals whooped in joy at her home in a West Bengal slum.

Sultana Begum, the 54-year-old great granddaughter-in-law of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, was up at her residence in a Howrah slum to watch the results.

"It was one of the happiest moments of my life. I stayed up till late in the night to watch the telecast," an ecstatic Sultana Begum said from her 66 sq ft room at Foreshore Road in Howrah district.

Sultana's husband, the late Mirza Mohammad Bedar Bukht, was the direct descendant of Bahadur Shah Zafar and queen Zeenat Mehal.

"Taj will always remain among the top draws," Sultana Begum says. But she had only a few family members to share her joy with.

Her daughter Madhu Begum, granddaughter Roshna Ara and brother Parvant Singh Maihari were basking in the reflected glory of the monument built by their forefathers. "I wish I could celebrate with friends, family and neighbours," says Sultana Begum, "But I can't celebrate the way I want to. It's impossible for me to afford all that with the Rs 400 monthly government pension."

She used to run a tea stall, but has rented it to a scrap dealer. But that too folded up, leaving her to appeal to the government for a higher pension and a piece of land."In 2005, I wrote to Sonia Gandhi asking for a higher pension for a dignified life. She wrote back saying necessary action would be taken, but nothing has happened," Sultana says.

Does this woman need sympathy? Does she deserve pension? Do we need to save less and pay more taxes to feed people like her?

I really don't know how it works in India as govt employee and their pension. I can only give my opinion based on what I from my experience working in US or govt jobs in US.

Isn't pension based on number of yrs worked and the sallary-earnings b4 retirement?? How is she retired at age of 54 ?

I also have same Q as Dewey about further educating or learning other crafts to gain more income 😳

How different is her case from other old people? At 54 she is not even old. I don't think she needs to be treated as a special case just because her husband was a descendant of some ruler.

Her husband was probably a class 4 employee with govt. Govt. pension is very low but she wants to rejoice the Taj victory because she is connected to Shahjahan's family😛.

I say - How is she any different than the others living below poverty level? Why do we need to work hard, slog our 😳 out and pay taxes to feed them, who cant even make an effort to work and earn a living and want sympathy and doles merely because their ancestors were once rulers of the place. Actually, I dont think we can call them rulers, they were marauders....

Freedom fighters, old rulers who gave up their kingdoms to the State and became regular citizens of the country, save and except their royal titles were given Pensions, to compensate for the donation they made to the nation. This is more like allowance .

One can understand the case of Freedom fighters, they sacrificied their lives and consequently, the families lost an earning member, so the Government giving them allowance would be understandable (difficult, but understandable). Old monarchs gave up their kingdoms and their income by way of taxes collected etc. would have come to a halt, giving them an allowance out of the estate/ out of the revenue, would make some sense.

But this pension too cannot be life long. In fact, after 50 years, the Government must seriously consider easing the burden of the tax payer and making these guys more accountable and more responsible.

But a old ruler.... whose ancestors plundered the nation... why them?

To mind, an immediate query arises - how this this ruler different from other rulers, werent they all similar? I dont know the answer to that... Take the case of other rulers, they fought wars, they conquered nations, they too plundered states to conquer them, but they were within India... or Bharat as it was known then. The Moghul invaders came from Persia, and that to my mind is a significant difference.

100% in agreement. 😊

We all agree there are millions of other poor and under previledge people like them. How many can we feel sorry for? All We can do is sympathize and empathize 😳 Rest is upto them.

@ maya I understand she wants to rejoice being decendant of family. But at who's expense????? Not at my hard work 😳

No in terms of pension, ok govt's servant for some unforeseen reason demises, Gov't should avail oppurtunity for her to sustain on herself, rather then pension.

Pension is nice in some cases, but in most is taken for granted and over head. Specially when either spouse is weel to do why give pension for sustaining. So unfair. Am not talking about soldiers and people getting hurt at work.
