My first… Aditya Narayan

Singer and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007 host, Aditya Narayan, speaks about some of the first momentous experiences in his life.

Day at school
I remember my first day very vaguely. I changed my school in the first standard and it was very weird. I came to Utpal Sanghvi from St.Mary's in Kalina. It was quite disorienting because it was a new place with a new atmosphere. My first day at school was nice. The people were friendly and the teachers too but I was quite scared. My first class was craft class and I got an A. It made me very happy!
When I was a kid there was a lot of shifting that was going on. I stayed in Calcutta for two years after I was born. I came back to Mumbai and started kindergarten. Then I was in Santa Cruz and then I came to Andheri so it was very strange coping. I always thought that this was part of growing up; that you keep shifting from place to place. It was only when I grew up that I realized it was not that way!

Day at college
It was odd because people knew that I was coming to college. There was this whole thing of 'Udit Narayan ka beta hai.' There were a lot of eyes anticipating, staring at me and wondering what I looked like, what I wore, how I was and how I talked. It was like being under a microscope! Some people tried to rag me as well and I happily accepted it. They asked me to sing and when you ask me to sing, I don't think that's ragging! College was nice. I went to class with a couple of friends and we would have fun. We'd sit on the last bench, sing songs and try and study a little bit… unfortunately the latter didn't happen too much!

Job
My first job was when I was 5 years old and I sang for tu mera dil, tu mere jaan. Anuu Maliekji gave the music for the song. Papa came home, taught me the song, and gave me a tight slap because I wasn't concentrating. But in the end everything worked out pretty well. I was very confident and dad and Anuuji were very happy. I got 100 bucks from Anuuji and I still have that note.

Salary
I bought chocolates with it and fed them to my family members; mom & dad, my friends, servants and myself.

Autograph
The first time I was asked for an autograph I was four years old and I didn't know how to write so I said 'mughe likhna nahi aata hai'. Then I did shows for Little Wonders and obviously learnt how to write. I gave my first autograph when I was 6 years old.

Time in front of a camera
It was for Rangeela where I did a small cameo. I had to sing 8 lines and Ramuji wanted me to enact them onscreen as well so I had to learn a bit of choreography so it was quite professional and I was treated like a grown up. It went pretty well. I took one or two takes and it was all good.

Crush
When I was thirteen I had a crush on Britney Spears

Date
I was 15-years-old and in school when it happened. I went for a movie, then for dinner and then came back home. All that cheesy stuff like holding hands and smiling at each other and all that other rubbish happened.

Girlfriend:
Who was my first girlfriend? I don't really remember but I think she was from my building.

Kiss
It was nice! I had a girlfriend in school and when I started going out with her I was shorter than her. I was about 5 feet tall; pretty short at the time. The kiss was sneakily done. I went to her place for dance practice, everybody left and we kissed.

Big purchase
I was in the 7th grade when I bought a Zen

Fight
I used to fight a lot because I was a really naughty kid. I used to get punished a lot for doing all sorts of crappy stuff. I would cut people's hair and all that nonsense so there were a lot of fights in school!
