Chapter 5:
Rachna put her hand outside the window, feeling the wetness of the raindrops against her skin. It seemed as though her parents were crying with her. Rachna loved her parents and missed them dearly, especially now that they were gone. But no matter how hard she tried, she could never forget the pain that she had gone through when they had disowned her so many years ago.
-----------------------------------------------
It had been 3 months since Rachna had left her home in Mumbai to pursue her dreams. In such a short amount of time, Rachna had fallen in love with Benaras. When Rachna's own family had disowned her, Benaras had accepted her with open arms.
KT Creations was all that Rachna had hoped and expected it to be. Her colleagues had become some of her closest friends. She enjoyed every moment she spent working there. In fact, the saddest part of Rachna's day was leaving work to go home. She hated going back to her tiny cramped room. She hated the feeling of loneliness and despair that crept into her heart whenever she was alone with nothing to do. It was at night, while she was lying in bed, that Rachna felt the strongest urge to cry. In fact, most nights that's what she did; she cried herself to sleep.
--------------------------------
Rachna could remember those long, dark nights vividly, even to this day. Those first three months in Benaras had been some of the worst days of her life. Never had she felt so lost, so helpless, so confused. She had contemplated returning to Mumbai several times during those three months, but something always prevented her from doing so. It seemed as though Benaras just did not want to let her leave. And as they say, when one door closes, another one opens. And that's what happened with Rachna as well. Just as the door to her family closed, destiny opened the door for someone else, someone very special. Rachna smiled as she remembered the awkwardness of her first meeting with Kabir.
----------------------------------
Things turned around for the better when a big project came Rachna's way. The workload was so much that Rachna spent late nights working on and perfecting her designs. She would often be the last person to leave the workshop. It was one such night when Rachna was working late that Kabir happened to stop by the office. Rachna and Kabir had not interacted too much since Rachna had started working at KT Creations. Of course they had met briefly during the interview when Kabir had hired her, but other than that, Kabir preferred to let his personal assistant Nitya deal with his employees.
Kabir walked into the office to collect his cell phone, which he had forgotten on his desk earlier that day. He saw that the light was on in the workshop. Thinking that someone must have forgotten to shut it, Kabir walked towards the workshop to turn off the light. As soon as he walked into the workshop, Kabir crashed into Rachna, who had finished her work and was leaving for the night. Rachna lost her balance but Kabir caught her just in time.
"I'm so sorry. I didn't realize someone was still working here."
Still in KT's arms, Rachna blushed and stood up straight. "I'm sorry sir. I actually had some last minute touch ups to finish so I stayed back. I was just leaving when you..."
An awkward silence filled the room, as neither Kabir nor Rachna knew what to say. Rachna finally broke the silence.
"Uhm, I guess I'll get going then."
"Yeah. Sure. I also have to leave."
Both Kabir and Rachna extended their arms to turn off the light at the same time and their hands touched at the light switch. They both retracted their hands immediately.
"I got it." Kabir turned off the light and both Rachna and Kabir walked out of the workshop together.
Realizing that it was so late, Kabir offered to drop Rachna home.
"Uhm, it's quite late. So, if you don't mind, can I drop you home Miss...uh..."
"Rachna. And thank you for the offer sir, but it's ok. I'm used to going home this late every day. I'll manage."
Kabir was surprised to hear Rachna say that. "Excuse me? You go home this late every day? But office ends at 6 pm. Why do you stay so late Miss Rachna?"
Rachna looked down at the ground, afraid to reveal the real reason of why she immersed herself in her work. Luckily for her, she didn't have to answer, as it started to rain; so both Rachna and Kabir ran back into the office to seek shelter. Both were waiting for the rain to be over so they could leave for their respective homes, but it seemed as though the weather had a mind of its own. The rain seemed to be getting heavier and showed no sign of ending soon.
Both Rachna and Kabir sat down in Kabir's office. Rachna had not eaten since lunch time, a fact revealed by the grumbling of her stomach. Kabir had also not had his dinner so he made two cups of coffee and laid out a box of biscuits as a makeshift dinner.
"Thank you for the coffee sir."
"No problem Miss Rachna."
They both sat together, drinking their coffee and listening to the pitter-patter of the rain.
Soon, the effect of the coffee wore off and Rachna began to feel drowsy, her eyes getting heavy with sleep. She didn't know when she fell asleep, but she woke up the next morning on a couch, covered with a blanket in an unfamiliar room.
----------------------------------
Rachna was brought out of her thoughts by the loud sound of glass breaking. She ran downstairs to investigate the source of the disturbance and found Sneha mausi sweeping up shards of glass from the floor.
"Arrey, Rachna. The glass just slipped from my hand. Don't worry, I'll clean it up. You go back to your room and rest."
As Rachna returned to her room and sat on her bed, she couldn't help but laugh at the coincidence of the situation.
----------------------------------
Rachna woke up the next morning on a couch, covered with a blanket in a strange room. She had been startled out of her slumber by the sharp sound of a glass breaking. As Rachna sat up, the unfamiliarity of the room confused her. She looked towards the source of the sound that had woken her up and found Kabir cleaning up shards of glass in the kitchen.
"I'm so sorry Miss Rachna. The glass just fell out of my hand. I hope I didn't disturb you."
"Uhm...no, it's ok. Umm sir, where am I and how did I get here?"
Kabir finished cleaning up the glass and stood up to face Rachna.
"Firstly, please accept my apologies for bringing you here without your permission. You fell asleep last night in the office and I tried to wake you up when the rain had stopped but it seems that you were in a deep sleep from being so tired. I couldn't leave you there alone so I thought it would be best to bring you here to my apartment. I hope you understand Miss Rachna."
Rachna looked down, blushing. "I'm so sorry sir. I troubled you so much."
"It's no trouble at all Miss Rachna. It's the least I could do for such a wonderful, hardworking employee."
Rachna looked up at Kabir, surprised to hear the compliment.
"I saw the designs that you were working on Miss Rachna. I must say, they are quite professional and well developed. I'm impressed. Nice work."
Rachna blushed hearing the words of praise. "Thank you sir."
After freshening up, Rachna left Kabir's apartment with a smile on her face, glowing with happiness. She had not felt this good about herself for the past three months. Her self-esteem had slowly been plummeting to rock bottom, but hearing Kabir appreciate her efforts and her talent had made Rachna fall in love with herself again. She remembered the reason of why she had left home. Rachna made a promise to herself that she would not hurt herself again by thinking about her family and how they had disowned her. She promised herself that she would try to forgive them and move on in her life happily.
-------------------------------------
A knock on the door broke Rachna's train of thought. She stood up and opened her door to find Sneha mausi standing there with a tray of food.
"Come my love. Let's have dinner in bed today."
Rachna smiled as she let her mausi into the room. "You always know how to cheer me up, don't you?"
Sneha lovingly touched Rachna's cheek. "Come, let's eat. And you can tell me about what happened in Delhi."
Rachna smile transformed into an expression of worry. "What happened in Delhi? Umm, nothing really."
"C'mon Rachna. Tell me about all the shopping you guys did. Show me what you bought."
Rachna breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh, shopping. Right."
After they finished their dinner, Rachna showed Sneha the things that she had bought in Delhi.
"Wow Rachna! This is so beautiful! You will look so gorgeous at Chaya's wedding."
Rachna smiled seeing her mausi's excitement. But in the back of her mind, she was thinking about all the events that had happened during the course of her trip.
"Rachna. Rachna. What are you thinking about? Are you worried about something? You can tell me beta."
Rachna did not know whether she was doing the right thing, but she decided to tell Sneha everything.
"Mausi ji, yes, I am worried about something. I met someone in Delhi, someone who I love very much, someone who I've been very unfair to..."
------------------------------------------
So that's it for now. What did you think of this chapter? Any predictions for what secret Rachna will reveal to Sneha?
