It could have been the work of one of Harry Potter's spells because, as if by magic, J K Rowling has undergone an amazing billion-dollar transformation.

The best-selling author looked better than ever at this week's UK premiere of Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix in London. With a scattering of diamonds, a plunging gold Prada dress and Christian Louboutin Decotissimo shoes, the 41-year-old writer was simply bewitching.

But back in 1998, the single mum who sat in cafes in Edinburgh writing her first Harry Potter novel looked very different. Too hard-up to have her red hair styled, Joanne Kathleen's tired eyes and complexion were showing the first crow's feet and frown lines.

In June 2003, JK's hair was over-bleached and shapeless, her clothes frumpy and her complexion washed-out and freckly. But it just goes to show what a 545million fortune, a few beauty treatments and the best make-up artists and hairdressers can do for a woman.

Celebrity make-up artist Patricia O'Neill says her new look is a result of facials and a good, creamy foundation.

Patricia also says JK's slimmer-looking nose in the red carpet picture compared to the older photo could be just make-up shading.

Hair stylist to the stars Stuart Phillips says, "JK's new blonde look is made up of a warm honey-gold tint with bleached highlights on top. The overall transformation makes her look younger," says Philips.

Whatever the author's secret, it's certainly spellbinding.
