Operation Bluestar... from rediff.com
" But the operation, which began in the wee hours of June 6, 1984, was like a dagger through the heart for Sikhs everywhere. Thousands railed against the Indian State, the army, and all those who were connected in any way with the operation. A large number of Sikh soldiers, enraged by rumours that the Golden Temple had been damaged (the temple itself remained untouched, though the Akal Takht was damaged), deserted the armed forces. Author Khushwant Singh famously returned his Padma Bhushan award in protest. Captain Amarinder Singh, the ex chief minister of Punjab, resigned from the Congress party. Four months and three weeks later, Indira Gandhi paid the ultimate price for ordering Operation Bluestar."
The Lal Masjid hole up is a recent example of misuse of places of worship by terrorists...however decisions of storming religious places is a very sensitive one... are the governments right in taking the war against terrorism to places where the sensitivities of a whole community are at stake?
Are a bunch of terrosrists so hard to handle that such extreme steps have to be taken to control them...?
Is it a pointer of failure of govt intelligence that they are unable to avoid such circumstances to build up in the place?
Why is the mixture of religion and politics such a dangerous thing...?
