A Secret Meeting
"Di I have landed in Delhi," Aakash called Anjali on the way to his hotel.
"Welcome Aakash!" Anjali cried excitedly.
Then dropping her voice said,
"You will meet me after midnight, won't you, at the far west end of my garden as decided, right?" Anjali confirmed with him.
Aakash paused for a fraction of second before replying, "Yes Di..."
The time had finally come, Aakash thought. He looked out of the window of the car at the black clouds gathering at a distance, hoping it was not an ominous sign.
In her room, Anjali suddenly turned back. She was sure she had heard a sound behind her.
She turned around and scanned the room quickly. No one was in sight.
"Aakash I have to go..." she whispered urgently.
"What happened Di?" Aakash noticed the worry in her voice.
"I think i heard someone," she said cupping the phone with her hand and whispering into it, "We shall carry on as planned."
She quickly disconnected the line and sat back.
But she was too late. Someone had heard her...

Shyam was too smart not to have noticed the change in his wife's attitude recently. There was something different about Arnav and Aman's attitude towards him too. He had to find out what was wrong! Surely they did not suspect him!
And so when he heard Anjali whispering to someone on the phone he had instinctively hid behind the shadows in the room and evasdropped on his wife.
The name Ranisaahiba uttered loudly sounded like Aakash. Then she lowered her voice. Who is Aakash Shyam wondered.
Straining his ear he stepped forward and his knee hit the door with a distinct thud! Shyam clamped a hand to his mouth lest he cried out in pain! But the small sound was enough to alert Anjali and much to Shyam's frustration she had lowerd her voice further and disconnected the line.
So he was left standing at the threshold of his room with an aching knee and a goforsaken name... Aakash!
The name seemed familiar though! Shyam racked his brains but got no answer. He punched the air in frustration!
He decided to call Dadiji. She might have an inkling, he thought as he dialled the Lucknow number.
No sooner had he mentioned "Aakash" Dadi uttered a startled cry.
"You fool! Is that the name you heard?" Her voice echoed in Sheeshmahal.
"Yes Dadiji," Shyam whimpered on the phone.
"Can't you make out, it can be none other than Aakash Singh Raizada, Arnav- Anjali's cousin." Subhadra Mallik barked into the phone.
"But what is he doing here?" Shyam asked incredulously. "I thought you had warned the Raizada family off and they had left Delhi for good!"
"Yes inded I had warned them against interfering in my grandchildren's life again! Ratna and her family had always been a bad influence in their lives! I did not want Arnav and Anjali to turn out as diffident and disobedient as their mother! After all she was responsible for my son's death! Devyani had agreed to leave the siblings alone and I had agreed that I would not let Ajit harm them again!" Subhadra Mallik spoke in a rush.
"And you broke your promise!" Shyam muttered under his breath.
"Shut up Shyam, who are you to talk of promises?" Subhadra warned him.
" Dont forget that I arranged your marriage to Anjali. If it hadnt been for me you would not have been rolling in Arnav's wealth! So do as I ask you! Contact all the hotels and guesthouses in Delhi. Find out where Aakash is staying and bring him to me. Take as many men for the job you want, you understand?
"Yes, yes Dadiji," Shyam mumbled.
"And keep a watch on your wife! She is getting out of your hand it seems!"
Shyam scowled.

Aakash looked at his watch for the fifth time. There was stll time to meet Anjali di. He was both excited and nervous. He took another swig from the mineral water bottle and cursed as he inhaled air! It was empty! He contemplated whether to go down the stairs into the sleazy neighbourhood to buy a bottle of water. But he thought the better of it.
Nani had warned him again and again to be as inconspicuous as possible. He had purposely chosen this rundown hotel with no room service in old Delhi on Nani's insistence. He poured himself a glass of water from the water jug at his bedside thirstily and prayed he wouldn't have water poisoning! He stared at the ceiling of the hotel. It was damp and the dull yellow paint was peeling off. He glanced at the linen on the bed. It seemed it had not been washed in a month. The chair is fine for me, Aakash grimaced as he flopped down on it and dialled the number of a car rental agency.
"Singh Car Service? I want to confirm my reservation for a car..."
After the conversation he threw away the sim card and inserted another one. Plan A had worked like clockwork. Now for Plan B!

Arnav was furiously typing away on his laptop but his mind was somewhere else.
Once again Khushi's brimming eyes flahed before him! He saw the pain, the hurt in them.
What the! he slammed shut the laptop. Why did he always succeed in hurting her!
He got up from his lounge chair and stared at the huge courtyard beyond.. Had not Khushi suggested a pool with a small garden would be ideal to fill up the empty space...
Yes he would do that... just like she wanted.
He raked his fingers through his thick hair.
Will that make her happy? Will that make her laugh...
Her laughter was full of mirth, sun rays reflected on ripples of water...

Aman hesitated at the main door of the Raizada mansion. He saw Anjali decorating flowers in the huge crystal glass vase, in the huge living room, humming a song to herself. And suddenly he felt very sad for her. Why did a nice lady like her have a scoundrel of a husband like Shyam.
Inadvertently he blurted, "How are you Anjali ji?
Anjali turned her head towards him and her smile faded. She remembered how Aman had accused her Shyamji and pursed her lips angrily.
Aman noticed that she hadn't answered her question.
"I...I...have come to get some papers signed," he stammered, his eyes downcast. "Where is ASR?"
"He is in his room, " Anjali said stiffly and left the room.
Aman winced and made his way to ASR's room.
Aman entered the room and saw his boss silhouetted in the dim light of the
"ASR?" he called out. Then a more forceful, "ASR are you okay?"
Arnav swivelled round, "Uh?" He looked dazed.
But he gathered himself quickly. What the! What was happening to him! He must not let Khushi affect him like this!
"Yes Aman.." He was back in ASR mode, his tone flat and cold. " I called you because I wanted to know if you have checked on Shyam? Did you get any information?"
"Yes ASR I am on track. Its something startling. But give me a few days please to confirm the information." Aman replied.
"Okay Aman," ASR's voice was crisp. "But don't dilly dally on this. I want to act before it is too late. I am worried about Di!"

There was knock on her door.
Anjali turned around. It was her brother.
"Di will you give me the list of the things you want for pooja tomorrow? I will get it in the morning."
Anjali smiled. Her Chhotey did not believe in God or religious rituals but he never failed to get all the items of worship. It was also his birthday tomorrow she thought . And he did not like to celebrate. He was strange indeed but she loved him. Maybe even more than her husband.
Reaching out to her younger brother she touched his cheek lovingly and handed him the shopping list.
She took a deep breath. She hated hiding things from him. Instantly she decided to tell him that Aakash was in Delhi and was coming to meet her tonight. She wanted to get this off her chest.
He turned to go.
"Wait Arnav,"Anjali cleared her throat. "You remember I told you Aakash had contacted me and Nani..."
Arnav held up his hand, his brown eyes growing darker in shade.
"I have told you before Di, I don't want to talk about them..."
And he was gone.

Anjali was tired of pretending to sleep. She opened her eyes and looked at the other side of the bed. Her husband was fast asleep. Thank Devi Maiyya for that. She checked her watch. It was 11.50 pm. Yes! finally! Her rendezvous with Aakash was in 10 minutes...
She had tried to tell Chhotey but he was in no mood to listen. Hopefully, she would be able to persuade him with time, she thought sighing.
She glanced at Shyam again and slipped out of their bed, careful not to wake him up. She tiptoed towards the door, and opening it ajar left the room and made her way quickly in the dark, down the stairs.
The flashlight in her hand gave her better vision in the dark. She slipped out of the huge glass doors into the cool night air. She shivered slightly and hugged her arms.
The garden was dimly lit. She hesitated for a second and then shaking her head made her way to the far end of the garden.
The moon hid behind the grey clouds casting a dark shadow ahead of her. Anjali's heart lurched in fear. She chided herself and dragged her feet ahead slowly, the flashlight showing the way.
As her eyes got used to the dim light, she saw a movement in front of her and stopped her heart pounding. About twenty feet away, a hooded figure was standing right in the direction of her path.
"Aakash?" she whispered expectantly.
But before the man could react, someone pounced on him from behind the bushes and he fell on the floor with a thud shouting obscenities. The two men grappled with each other on the floor.
Anjali's flashlight fell on the floor as she screamed at the top of her voice for help!

Arnav awoke with a start. He had heard a woman scream..
Di! Is it Di!
His heart raced. He sprang up from the bed and ran down the stairs at break neck speed.
He heard the scream again. It came from the garden. He will not let anything happen to his Di! He will not! He dashed towards the garden in panic, beads of sweat trickling down his temple.
And then abruptly he saw her... his beloved Di trembling like a leaf in the dark!
Arnav closed the gap in a rush and hugged his Di.
Anjali felt her brother's strong reliable arms around her and clung to him crying in relief, pointing at the men punching each other.
Arnav nodded his head and pushed his Di behind his back.
He stepped forward and grasped both men by their collars and pulled them apart.
One of them he recognized immediately.
"Jijaji? What's going on here?"
"This man was stalking Ranisahiba!" Shyam replied, kicking hard the man writhing on the grass..
"No, No..."Anjali protested squirming.
"I will take care of him!You are scaring Di, can't you see!" Arnav rasped at Shyam.
"Shyamji let the man him go!" Anjali cried aloud.
"Why Ranisahiba? He is known to you?" Shyam hid an evil smile. He was sure the man was Aakash. He had been surprised when Anjali had slipped out of bed stealthily and had decided to follow her. When she had called out Aakash's name in the garden he had understood why she had ventured out at midnight.
"You know him Di?" Arnav looked at his Di in astonishment when she nodded her head.
Shyam was delighted. Dadiji would be so happy with him. He had caught Aakash red handed! And Ranisahiba too! Now she would have to explain to Arnav why she was meeting Aakash Raizada stealthily in defiance of his wishes.
The man with the hood rose from the ground, whining in pain.
Arnav caught him by the scruff of his collar and flashed the torchlight on his face and Anjali gasped.
"Di? What is it? Tell me don't be afraid," Arnav's voice was hoarse with concern.
Anjalis head was swimming. Aakash had sent her his picture so that she could identify him.
This man...standing in front of her...was someone else...someone much elder...he was not Aakash at all.
She sighed in relief and said truthfully, "I don't know him Chhotey!" At the same time she could not help worrying about the whereabouts of her cousin.
Shyam's jaw dropped. He thought on the same lines. Yes, where was Aakash?
