"Happy Birthday Ahil sir..." uttered his whole office crew.
"Thanks everyone...thank you for your wishes...now go back to work. We have a deadline to meet." With that, Ahil dismissed the crowd that was gathered in his office to wish him on his birthday.
Throughout the day he received several phone calls and visits from his friends, family and clients and yet he wanted to hear a birthday greeting from a certain someone, which he didn't.
The evening was spent dining with his family who came out to meet him at his favorite restaurant. The night...with friends in a club..and yet the day seemed incomplete without the one birthday wish for which now he was getting restless.
"What is in a phone call? I am not a monster. I am surely not going to bark if I get a call with a birthday wish. How insensitive! Everyone wished me...except...aaarrggghhh," Ahil thought and got angry.
"Screw it man... I am leaving." Ahil bid a quick farewell to his friends (to their dismay) and drove to his house as fast as he could.
The house was quiet as everyone had already retired to their rooms. Ahil was sorely disappointed to find the house silent and not a single sole awake.
He knew it shouldn't matter to him but it did...the single birthday wish... or the lack of which he was now obsessing over. How could he let himself go this far? When did he start to care?
"Aaah," Ahil groaned inwardly and went to the kitchen to pour himself a glass of water. In the darkness of the kitchen, the light from the fridge felt like a 500 watt bulb. Yet he could see no movement in the vicinity...or particularly in the room next to the kitchen which belonged to "the certain someone" who didn't wish him.
Ahil closed the door of the fridge with force and rattled the shelf next to it. It made quite a ruckus and yet...no response from "anyone."
Fuming, Ahil now went towards his room. As he lit his bedroom light he noticed something in the middle of his bed.
On a small silver platter lay a solitary cupcake. Frosted white with a...chili pepper in the middle where a candle should be. The arrangement was accompanied with a handwritten note on a small piece of paper.
Ahil wasn't sure what to feel about the chili decorated cupcake so he decided to read the note first.
"Happy Birthday. I couldn't think of a better gift for a person who is secretly sweet but portrays himself to be bitter and angry...thus the sweet cupcake with the chili on top. All you have to do is throw the pepper away and be your true self. Enjoy the cupcake. - Sanam. "
Ahil broke out in a smile. He looked at the clock which had just struck 12. It was a good birthday. He shook his head in satisfaction and took a big bite of the cupcake after throwing out the chili from the top. Yummm.
