I am not sure but from what I read, they are beheaded ( dead penalty ).. But it order to do this, the judge will have to be really sure of his guilty. In some cases, if the victim family choose to spare the life of the convict, then he can get life time prison.. Some cases that I read, it says that they rapist will be receiving life time prison with lashes too.. So it varies..

I dont how a typical middle class granny wud feel abt how her 3 generations of women have been treated.. b4 her and after her. Chances r she might say today's women have far more freedom than she cud have imagined in her wildest dreams. Chances r she wish this change may have never happened. Therez massive changes the world is going thru in this IT driven world. In a democratic country like India with such a massive population, poverty, illiteracy, class-caste-religion divides, conservative ideas vs liberal thoughts- women r epicentre of the shift. Its truely the women's status of living in any society that determines the progress of the society.

Whilst, India's overwhelmingly huge MIDDLE class is moving towards Upper class lifestyles.. what with bigger economy, higher salaries and affordable fascilities all around. For ex. In 90s, a middle class family wud be well-off if it has TV, Refreg, bike, Telephone. Now, a middle class family gotta have a car, 4-5 latest cellphones, Big flat screen TV, at least one computer, one or 2 bikes/scooty, and privacy for all adults(meaning separate rooms)... thats a lot to ask for most families but gotta catch with others. Women have the BIGGEST role change in all of these.

The basic and higher education for girls is necessity now.. and working women/career women is a norm now. Right from newly born to @ 40 years old women have been affected with the last 2 decades socio economic change. They r now more Upper class than middle class in outside world, but still have to be typical middle class women at home. Cloths that women wear r also the mirror of their background, so to change the perception, middle class women r wearing more n more upper class clothing styles. Its only natural. Is anything wrong? Nothing.

But how the other parts of this big country and its diverse societies have changed? Poor r still poor, their houses(slums) r smaller but they have Tv, cables, bike and cell phones. From there, they now know how to mimic the middle and even upper class. Lack of education and principled up-bringing(sanskars), jobless and misdirected youth, glorification of sex, violence and power on TV, entertainment, street politics... all leading to do "dare-devil" acts of rape, violence and murder without even fearing consequences. The same youth had the desire to the same in the past too.. but the boundries were so clear to create fear of not overstepping. More is messed up in the boundries that were visible once between middle and upper class. The clash is earth shattering.

While the middle class is accepting that their daughters and sisters and wives have every rights to look beautiful and modern day women, they r not sure if they r safe around the streets and public transports and offices they r working in... if the ppl (read men) have changed. Unfortunately.. nope. The rapes that r reported r probably not even 5% of that r not reported. And sexual abuse... cant even imagine ... SO whats going wrong? Lets see whats going right..

- Media is getting stronger. Rich, famous and powerful r also affraid of media.

- As small % it may be, the reporting of sexual and domestic violence is increasing.

- More ppl r getting aware of the gravity of the situation, demanding authorities to do concrete!

- Women r self aware of danger and prevention options.

- Ppl r aware going forward is the only option, not going backward.

and many more..

BUT. whats shud be happening sooner than later is..

- An ave. family consisting of mom-dad, son- daughter... talking abt the issues that matter them to MOST and talk abt it. Exchange ideas and how to play safe. Draw the boundries and obbey the simple rules.

- a society (a group of familes living in the same neighborhood, extended families, same caste, same gender, same temple, mosque, church groups.. whatever) get together and discuss the matter and take it their own hands.. coz most often the cuprits r from the same society.

-Self protection classes.. free for the societies- self funded. If U pass.. go for protection for family classes... sponsers included. Go for protect.. the stranger.. semi- government funded.

- For every abused woman, 5 good men offers to be rakhi-brother.. help her out in any way they can.

-Once the model works, reach out to other areas.. esp. under developed ones.

Sounds like "only in ur dreams?" may be. But I think its achievable and thats the only way. Hopping for others to help u in crisis... its better to help urself b4 the crisis occures. And then reach out.

U see, when I left India 15 years ago.. I used to think they r so many good things that can .. unfortunatley.. will never happen to India... BUT i have seen it happening. 😊 So I m always hopeful. We have 5000 years old history.. we have gone thru struggles of sea, mountain and continent changings.. we can go thru this one too. 😊 We will start it from what we can do and then ask others if they can join. 😊

Okay, sorry.. very long... and bit emotional. This subject is emotional.

And no, I m not sorry for being a man. and I m not sorry being NRI. and I m not sorry for any1 who doesnt deserve my sympathy.
