Here's another review - another 1 star from Mayank Shekhar, the guy who reviews on the Filmy channel (Sahara) and also for the Mumbai Mirror ...

------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------

Mayank Shekhar

FILM : Aap Kaa Surroor - The Moviee, The Real Luv Story
DIRECTOR:
Prashant Chadha
ACTORS: Himesh Reshammiya
RATING : *

It's been over two years since you've held this newspaper, the film reviews on this page, and a little metre that appears below it every weekend. Most reviews, I suspect, are cursorily glanced for their "star-ratings"; few actually bother with humble efforts beneath those linear constellations.

A still from Aap Ka Suroor...

Yet, I am willing to bet my bottom buck you haven't quite paid attention to what those "stars" against film-titles on these pages literally stand for. Look over it now. Five stars on the indicator suggests a movie that could leave you speechless, at least it did the reviewer. By every measure of success, this one deserves those rarest of the rare ratings, never deflowered since its inception. Truly, I am speechless.

Some have waited this notable moment of world cinema for a while. Most have seen the excitable promos of Bombay auto-rickshaws chasing fast cars in Europe. You pretty much know what to expect. So did I. My two-word report on this monument would still read: No way!

I just watched the curio, and I am still not certain if I actually watched it. Already, it seems a blurry figment of my own nightmare. When I recover, I may tell you better and more.

But if this is a true story as claimed in the posters, then Himesh bhai, our country singer, is actually the globe's greatest, yet "humble", rock star. He flies a private jet; drives the centre of a huge limo convoy. Goris of Germany just can't get enough of him; neither can Mallika Sherawat. Most women get so intimidated by his status, they don't even entertain a warm thought of him as a harmless dream.

If the story is true again, Himesh bhai is jailed for murdering a reporter, who attempted a television sting-op on him. Of course, that's a carefully cultivated conspiracy.

But never mind that. Never mind his supposed love story. Never mind the precious reason behind his sulk (he lost his laugh on his brother's death). Never mind your mind.

The true, terrible conspiracy in this movie is actually directed against Himesh Reshammiya, the actor. When he is on screen, you'll look at nothing else. Hear his spoken voice that's deliberately dubbed to sound a vague cross between a cow's moo and a horse's nay. Listen to him sing the Gayatri Mantra and the track 'Darde Dil Darde Jigar' solo over a guitar (please do it for me). Watch him awkwardly gesture and aimlessly gaze throughout in a jacket, a baseball cap and half a fool's cap page for a dialogue sheet. Check him out when he smiles once. Ogle at him match Mithun's steps. You'll be convinced the makers of this movie don't like this gentle soul too much. In the annals of pop-cultural history, this will go down as the lamest joke played on one man for this long.

I am told the filmmakers have even considered a sequel to this punishment, were it to pack theatres. Amen! But really, not fair. Last I read, making bad music wasn't a crime.

------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------

😉 😉

Timesof India rated it as 2stars while CNN-IBN gave a 1 star ... I think we can safely say that Himmy Mia has an awesome movie to his credit ...

😉 😉

Aap Kaa Surroor : Movie Review
29th June 2007 20.13 IST
By Aparajita Ghosh

Fans of singer-composer Himesh Reshammiya will be quite pleased with his debut film as an actor – Aap Ka Suroor : The Moviee: The Real Luv Story'.

The movie, directed by Himesh's longtime friend Prashant Chaddha, is not based on Reshammiya's life. It is a fiction story that anyway answers some FAQs about the singer-musician.

In his acting debut, Himesh is too uptight before the camera. For the most part he wears a brooding look that has by now become quite typical of him. And the emotions that he expresses in the film are those of sadness, pain, anguish, helplessness and anger. In fact, after some time the movie begins to look like a vanity collage of Himesh Reshammiya.

'Aap Ka Surroor' tells the story of HR (Himesh), a rock star on a musical tour in Germany. He falls in love at first sight with Riaa ( Hansika Motwani ), the event manager of his concert.

On the other hand, there is Ruby ( Mallika Sherawat ), the partner of the organizer of the concert. Ruby is in love with HR. But he doesn't reciprocate her feelings. He loves Riaa.

HR's troubles begin with the murder of a TV journalist. The finger of suspicion points towards HR and he is arrested by Stuttgart police and put behind bars.

Convinced of HR's guilt, Riaa's father (Sachin Khedekar) fixes her marriage with another man. Now, HR has only one option: to run away from police captivity and find the real killer to prove his innocence before his ladylove is married off to someone else. Will he succeed?

'Aap Ka Surroor' is based on a wafer thin plot. On top of it, the film's script and dialogues are very filmy. But director Prashant Chaddha makes the flick interesting by telling the story very stylishly and at a brisk pace. In fact, the film is akin to an outstretched music video that packs in different ingredients necessary for a masala entertainer: romance, music, drama and action.

The film's USP is its music. Songs like 'Asalaam Valekum', 'Tera Mera Milna', 'Tanhainyan' and 'Mehbooba' are a delight to ears. However, the placement of 'Mehbooba' (with Mallika) could have been better.

While Himesh impresses as a music composer of the film, he fails to make any mark as an actor. He is stiff, he is conscious of the camera and he tries to act as if he has all the pain in the world. This act begins to look superficial after a while. Anyway, considering it is his first attempt at acting, some leniency should be shown in evaluating his performance.

Hansika Motwani is cute and gorgeous. Although she is confident in front of the camera, her acting skills need some polishing.

Mallika Sherawat looks sexy and plays her part of a vamp very well. The change in her character in the second half was unexpected.

Among other actors, Raj Babbar and Sachin Khedekar have very small roles. Shravan as Himesh's sidekick is superb.

On the whole, 'Aap Ka Surroor' is worth a watch if you are a Reshammiya fan. The film's story interweaves romance, mystery and thrills in a way that will appeal to the masses.

Rating: **1/2

So I finally watched it, Chankya Theator mein....😃

The movie was nice, obviously I didn't go expecting anything great (story or acting wise) from the movie...Himmy was OK, I think he was a bit too restrained in the movie, and seriously he needs to get rid of that topi, overcoat, beard and tight jeans....movie better hoti inn sabke bina. The person who played his friend's role was very good, he should got a bit more footage. Hansika was cute and gorgeous, and acted well too lekin uski smile kuchh jyada ho gayi thi. Mallika ka jyada role thaa nahin....Movie mein surprise surprise, Baani (MTV Roadies waali) bhi hai, she played the part of Hansika's friend...main 5 min tak sochta rahaa ki maine isse dekha hai pehle... 😆

Lekin movie ki jaan hain, Songs....they are just too good..fantastic, visual impact double thaa. Sadly 2 of the songs (Tere Bina and Tanhaiyaan) were only 1 line long....poore songs nahin dikhaye....grrrr!😡 . IMO AKS should atleast be among top 3 albums of this year. I don't regret watching it, main to sirf songs ke liye bhi dekh sakta hoon.

Thanks for the review. At the very least, it will be like watching a very good music video, with nice songs and picturization. I think that's reason enough to see the movie.

Aap Ka Surroor - The Moviee - Yes, Himesh can act
<>document.write('Joginder Tuteja, ') Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Sunday, July 01, 2007]

Yes, Himesh Reshammiya can act!

Well, the review could have been considered over at this point itself since this is what the entire world wanted to know. The question on everyone's lips since the film's announcement around 9-10 months back was - Would HR be able to hold his audience's interest to 'watch' him on screen for 2 hours?

The good news is that the composer/singer hasn't let his fans down at all while also added on to the admirers who are now unanimous in applauding him for his guts and a brave step to come in front of the camera, if not anything else. Himesh has justified the claims that he has been making during last 3 months of the promotion that he wasn't foolhardy to jump into acting arena without thinking about the pros and cons.

After watching AAP KAA SURROOR, one can be rest assured that this is not the last film he would ever act. Here are the reasons why!

Can he emote?
Watch him say I LOVE YOU for the first time to his lady love Ria with tears floating down his bearded cheek and claps and whistles from the packed auditorium prove that he can.

Can he dance?
Watch him do a jig a la Mithun Chakravorty after a few drinks and you know that given an opportunity and some classes, he can. By the way, the sequence also proves that he has a good sense of humor.

Can he joke?
Watch him sportingly laugh at the digs taken on him for his nasal voice and his cap. Now how many out there in Bollywood would be willing to something like this in front of the world?

Can he deliver his dialogues well?
Watch him in the climax confrontation scene and you know that he can modulate his voice accordingly as per the situation.

Can he be natural in front of the camera?
Watch him with the young man who plays his best friend/business associate and one wonders if they share the same relation in real life too.

Can he compose/sing?
Well, is this something expected from an 'actor'? But then this one major advantage that now HR, the actor, has got post the release of AAP KAA SURROOR!

All of the above does showcasing HR as someone who has good reasons to pull in the audience. So how about the film's story itself? Well, this is one department which is just about fine. Ok, so the film does revolve around the real life of HR, what with him being a rock star, intervention of media in his personal life, event organizers fighting to get him on board, sponsors playing a major role in creating or destroying a celebrity, crazy fans, lavish lifestyle, lack of privacy etc.

For all of this, writer-director Prashant Chaddha deserves a credit for sticking to HR, a real life celebrity, rather than spin some overtly imaginative tale. But then there are clichs galore, especially in the love story of HR and Ria, which take the film a few steps back. Two people meeting, girl's father coming in between, girl being forced to marry someone else - it is just a formula being repeated.

Even the identity of killer isn't exciting enough though the means to find the clues towards the killer [MMS, electronic safe etc.] do keep you on the edge of the seat. Having said that, during this entire show, one sorely misses Madame Sherawat who doesn't quite have a meaty role as one was promised all this while. Well, for this matter even Hansika is barely there in the second half and though she acts decent, she seriously needs to shed at least 15 kgs, if not. She looks all awry and spread out that would surely have made life difficult for her costume designer.

The film bears a lavish look and each and every frame has a picture perfect look to it. Songs go well with the film, especially 'Tere Bina' that has been shot on musical instruments during the opening title roll and later comes in the second half of the film. One wonders though why was 'Assalam Walekum', introduction track of HR, not mounted on a far more lavish scale. For someone who is a world known rock star, HR needed a far bigger canvas there.

Coming back to whether AAP KAA SURROOR can be given a dekko? Yes, it certainly can be! A crisp 2 hour film, it has it's share of glitches and clichs but credit it to the fast pace and an engaging second half coupled with sheer curiosity of watching Himesh on the big screen that AKS turns out to be a reasonably satisfying fare

For someone who would be turning 40 soon, certainly doesn't have a conventional hero look, is being panned for each of his albums since he became nation's darling with AASHIQ BANAYA AAPNE, has been in the midst of a controversy every fortnight, and still has been accumulating fans in thousands with every passing week, Himesh has faced enough roadblocks in his decade old career. AAP KAA SURROOR should prove to be a vehicle that would overcome the new hurdles in his career too!

Rating: ***

AAP KAA SURROOR (At Shiela and other Delhi theatres)

The master of evoking extremes, Himesh Reshamiyya has to be the biggest public addiction of our times. His first film, "Aap Kaa Surroor", is proof that the man can afford to scoff at critics, ignore all those nasal whispers. He needs no help from any quarter. For all his limited, very limited, acting ability, he can carry a film on his shoulders. His popularity as a singer precedes him. The masses clap when the Censor certificate is displayed. They whistle when he is shown picking his cap: the camera focuses on the hand and the cap, not the face. They roar when he enters the film, singing and dancing to "Assalam-o-alaikum".

Some might hate him, and with reason too. Others might love him, again with reason. Yet nobody can ignore Himesh Reshamiyya in the big, bad world of Bollywood today. Nothing succeeds like success and Himesh is nothing but a success story.

Here in his debut film he comes up with a shrewd combination of real and reel life, using the silver screen to answer his detractors. Never quite self-righteous, he takes little digs at himself, but importantly answers all the questions many ask: is he actually just a nasal singer? Why does he not take his cap off? And is he arrogant? Why does he not smile at all?

So, is director Prashant Chadha's "Aap Ka Surroor" Himesh's real life story? No. But it is a clever combination of real life instances with complete fantasy. So Himesh gets to play Himesh though often in the film he is called H.R., the rock star from India. He is on a world concert tour. And even as the masses swoon over his music – again a clever interpolation – he is faced with a murder charge. Put behind bars in Germany, his challenge lies in winning over his girlfriend before she can be married off to somebody, and coming clean of the charge. The masses know he is clean, he would come clean. Yet they wait till the end, drunk on his music, swaying to his beats, laughing at his one-liners.

While Hansika in her debut film looks older than a teenager, it is Mallika Sherawat, in a smallish role, who does wonders. She oozes oomph. Himesh? Well, if according to some he is a limited singer, he is still more limited as an actor. But you don't need acting competence to score at the box office; charisma does that fine enough. It is his charisma that turns the otherwise mediocre film into a success story. Go watch it at a packed single-screen theatre near you. It is an experience, not a film that matter. The joy is in drinking off the cup offered by Reshammiya with his very own brand of art. Now add a pint of Mallika doing a Helen. Life is on a high.
