Chapter- 1
Goenkas, Thakurs and the city.
It was raining.
Typical Kolkata weather during the monsoons. The first rains were always welcome after a long and torturous summer. But with it came the side-effects of people driving like fishes, filth getting inside clothes, diseases and the much-hated humidity!
But it wasn't humid now, it was raining all right but carrying with it, a cold breeze. It didn't help with the poorly-maintained roads, though. But nighttime somehow made it bearable. Usually this time saw the party-going youngsters pouring in at different venues known for their long-standing and famous night-clubs.
These youngsters (and a good number of not-so-young-ones as well) usually belonged to the upper-middle class to outright filthy-rich families which meant that there was less cursing the Rain Gods and more of enjoying the pouring while being sloshed or stoned or both. Some saw it as a cherry on pie, and really who wants to get high in sweltering heat anyway?
She was slightly drunk too, but was sober enough to drive herself home. It was five past 1 a.m in her watch, she preferred to check her phone for time instead. Her current vision wasn't really keen on deciphering the tiny dots on her expensive watch.
'Bye guys, I need to leave' she called out to her 'friends', only one of them managed to formulate the words 'drive safely' while another one merely nodded with eyes closed.
The predator was keeping an eye on her, his prey. She did feel his gaze but chose to ignore it. He was determined to catch hold of her tonight and make sure she pays for rebuking his advances and slapping him in public. The memory of the slap made him touch his cheek...his face reddened with anger!
She went out for her car and he followed her moments later. He knew she was slightly drunk, he saw her weary steps and fumbling with her car keys. His smirk grew wider as he drove, 'this is going to be fun' he thought.
Suddenly he saw her take the wrong turn. Within minutes she was crossing the second Hoogly Bridge. She was driving faster now, he increased his speed too.
He knew where she lived and he knew this is not her route. Was she going to some friend's house or she is drunk enough to forget her way home. He wanted to laugh if the latter was true. She was making it easier now.
Another twenty minutes and they were in the middle of a highway. He knew this route, he drove faster, surpassed her car and came to a crashing halt in front of his prey's car, effectively blocking her way. There were hardly any vehicle in the road, jungle on either sides and it was now pouring cats and dogs. Perfect set-up, he thought and came out of the car.
She came out too, 'What the hell you think you're doing?' She bellowed.
The rain made her too-short clothes stick to her like second skin, she was an alluring site indeed!
'What do you think?' He was still smirking eyeing her from top to bottom. She was now scared. She shouldn't have come out of her car, she did change her shoes inside her car once she got in as her heels were killing her, but really what good will that do? Her instincts screamed at her to run, and so she did.
She ran.
She ran in the opposite direction not long before she hit the wilderness, the combination of fear and rain made her frozen inside out. He followed, shouting at her. And in one unfortunate for her and fortunate for him moment, her feet caught a branch and she tripped. He held her up roughly making her stand.
'I've waited for this for so long' it was his turn to bawl in the rain, 'and look at you, you pathetic s***, you served it to me in a platter' he laughed hysterically. She was shaking violently, her back against a tree. 'Now you'll know what is it to slap ME, to humiliate ME!'
But before he could do something, she surprised him by encircling her arms around his neck. She was not shaking anymore and the fear on her face was replaced with an alluring smile. She was smiling at him! He was caught off guard by this sudden change.
'You're not the only one, I've waited for this too' she stated just loudly enough for him to hear and she started caressing the side of his neck. 'I knew you'd follow me tonight' she now whispered in his ears, he stood shocked.
'And I knew what I had to do' she completed the sentence and stabbed him at the same place where she was caressing him moments ago. He let out a wail.
She stabbed him repeatedly in the same spot, then his chest, then his stomach, he kept screaming, she maintained a dead face all the while. He tried his best to fight but the pain of the first stab had rendered him near-incapable. And at last, when he fell flat on his back, blood oozing out from different places and getting washed in the rain, she looked at him and within moments, started crying.
She was crying like the world had ended for her, she was crying like she's gone insane, she screamed and wailed in front of the dead body for quite a few minutes before the crying subsided to sobbing.
She got up at last, giving a final, pained look at the dead body. She placed her hands on his neck and then checked his wrists. He was indeed dead.
With some difficulty, she came back to her car and saw the car that had blocked her way. She sat inside, it was 2 already. She clutched the steering, took a long, deep breath and started giggling.
She was now laughing hysterically, while she pushed the blasted thing out of her way, took a U-turn and drove straight. She laughed so hard, her stomach was now paining and she had tears in her eyes. This was so much fun...she should do it more often! She thought and drove away.

Dr Dayal looked at her sleeping form. He knew his daughter had a long, rough day today. She was probably the only peace of mind he could get in a world so insane!
He knew he was here with a mission of his own, but it hardly helped when at times he could nearly feel his sanity slipping away. Coming to Kolkata was bad enough, this brand new association with the Goenkas made it worse. A bunch of over-smart fools, as he regarded them.
He was also only too aware of his daughter and her closeness with the Goenka sons as well. What she did with men have never been his business, what irked him was their surname.
That very surname would make a surge of hatred rush through his very being. At times he'd thought, rather hoped that he'll let his guard down and blast at them for being what they were. But business came first, and there's really no place for such strong emotions where profit is concerned.
'Keep your friends close and enemies closer' he had always believed in these words of wisdom and followed suite.
His array of thoughts were broken by the sudden, shrill ringtone of his phone.
'Hello' he replied in his usual baritone.
'I'm sorry for disturbing you at this time sir, but because you've dealt with a few forensic cases in the past, I...I just thought, you might...' the caller stammered. 'Get to the point, Doctor' Dayal cut him short.
The caller drew a long and deep breath and spoke 'Police and localites have found this body of a missing person, sir. He was reported missing two days ago.'
'Hmmm...name?' Dayal asked while getting ready.
The caller gulped and answered in a rather meek voice 'Navin Mathur.'
Precap- 'Who's THAT?' The girl asked, torn between wonder and amusement.
'The green-eyed monster' She replied in an icy tone.
