In the epic, it is indeed Arjun who pats his thigh.
I am repeating this statement for the 100th time.

It goes like this -
  • Krishna tells Arjun that Bhima will have to adopt unfair means to defeat Dury. But Krishna does NOT reveal the "unfair" means to be used. But Krishna sees the gada yudh as the opportunity for Bhima to fulfill his pran of breaking Dury's thigh.
  • Arjun (yes, ARJUN) pats his thigh
  • Bhima gets the signal
It's just that that CVs have made Arjun "verbally reveal" to Bhima of Dury's weakened part, rather than merely patting the thigh.

I think it was Arjun only...
However the whole manner was different.

if krishna did not reveal then y did arjun patted his thigh...but nywyz this whole thing was unnecessary...since bheem had already taken an oath in the court that he wud break duryo's thigh as he made draupadi sit on the thigh...bheem just had to remember that oath...

Exactly. Bhima needed to remember that oath which he didnt, maybe in the heat of the moment.
So, Arjun reminded him.

krishna ji did reveal that dury's thigh needs to be broken after which arjuna gives that signal

the only thing is that krishna ji doesn't do it on his own but the idea is his only

What unfair? It was destined due to Bhima's oath as well as a sage's curse to Duryodhana.
