I know an American family who are homeschooling their two girls. They have no TV at home and very rarely go to the movies. They are into Diamond business so girls help in that too. Girls look happy, smart and know all the house work and also their family business of diamonds. Their dad who is an acquaintance is proud of the fact that his daughters have no clue about Brad Pitt 😛or Angelina Jolie. Mother is a homemaker who also helps in family business. When I asked about kids interaction with other kids of their age, the mom said that they have family friends and so many relatives so kids never felt isolated. Mom thinks that she gives the best education at home and daughters are doing well so there is no need to go to school.

Another case was of a recent spelling bee winner who was home schooled.

Yet another case is my friend's friend who found out that her 13 year old son was getting into wrong company at school and dropping in grades and she is homeschooling him for an year now and found it better. It also helps her to learn whole curriculam. She is trying to be a teacher herself after a while.

My questions are

1. Do you think this approach is right?

2. Is schooling really a personal decision?

3. Should kids miss out on going to a school?

Please add your views on the whole scenario and not just my questions. If possible please give an insight into various schoolings like public, chartered or private.

For now, I just want to quote myself from one of the previous posts.
I had not met any home-schooled kids until last year. During orientation at college last year, I met this guy named Patrick from a small town in Wisconsin who had come all the way to New Jersey because he just wanted to run away from his family.

That guy had a perfect score on the Physics SAT (800/800 - A feat I can just dream about achieving 😆), so yeah, very very smart! He was home-schooled by his mother. We were in the same group during orientation and we were partners for a few activities. The guy was SHY like no other. He admitted that he knew 10 high school kids and that was it. He said that home-schooling is the worst thing that can happen to you and literally isolates one from the world. He clealry said that he hated his parents for doing this to him and that is why he came all the way here. He went home during Christmas and that was it. We are almost in the middle of summer vacations and he is just roaming around NJ. The point is, that staying behind a child all the time maybe makes him/her smart but deprives him/her of many other more important things!
Will come back later tomorrow now. I never knew Patrick could be of any help. 😆

i dont like the idea of home schooling. get your kid into any type of school but the main point is to get the kids into a good school that is out of your home. a childs interaction with an outside kid is as important in nurturing as the interaction with parents. this is is an era where a kid needs to be aware of whats going on outside their home. i was not amazed to read rutumodi915 encounter with a homeschooled kid becoz the consequence was expected. i would like to know your views on this maya 😛

not at all. schooling is essential and the best system to develop social interaction skills and personality development right from the beginning. Never undermine society. never undermine school.

2. Is schooling really a personal decision?

don't know. i say parenthood is not an easy job 😆. these are important decisions of the kid's life after all.

3. Should kids miss out on going to a school?

absolutely not! i don't even like children missing pre-school and some of the smartest and adorable kids (friends and relatives) also went to day care.

Please add your views on the whole scenario and not just my questions. If possible please give an insight into various schoolings like public, chartered or private.

when i make one and send him to school, i will discuss these in details. My rich, famous as well as ordinary friends and relatives speak FOR public school system here, with few exception.

Very nice topic!

1. Do you think this approach is right? NO, in school kids are exposed to various challenges in life. But hearing folks where home staying wify for benefit of the family, takes this up, ensures kids are competant then am little 😕

2. Is schooling really a personal decision? Yes it is

3. Should kids miss out on going to a school? Depends, home schooling thinking whole family goal can be very productive affair. As my colleague said 3 kids = 2400$ in day care, plus good education. His wife being intellect, took home schooling as best thing to do. am 👏

The best memories of my school days is singing songs like "Country Roads" in the music group with a very dynamic and taleneted teacher called Mr. Michael... he instilled the passion for music in hundreds of kids.... the sheer joy of being a part of the musical experience has stayed with me...

Why should we take such experiences away from kids? We cant possibly give them these kind of experiences by home schooling!

Why we send a kid to skool, to learn about society ,to learn how to mingle with diff kids, make a kid compatative, learn equality.......in homeschooling i think these things not posible.

Raunaqwa, My view in one line is I am against it but I want to debate it with all other members here and weigh all pros and cons.

Now as for child interation as I wrote earlier the girls mingle with everyone. They have their family friends and cousins. Only difference is they don't have school friends. But they are interacting with kids of their age and also good at so many other things. They go out and all but no TV and movies only which parents choose. No dating. They are a caucasian American family.

Taking exams with others in the same grade developes a sense of healthy competetion, a drive to do better. It also gives the right attitude to cope with peer (not sayyad qwerty) pressure. All this is clearly lacking among cousins and neighbours of different ages. Schooling at school also would teach better time management also I would assume.
