No doubt KYY has some similarities to Boys Over Flowers (the bullying, the F5 and the yellow cards) but I think it's also much more than just a copy. There were so many things I wanted more from BOF so I'm glad KYY explores other characters and relationships than purely the main couple (or the love triangle). Firstly! The theme: a group of 5 students who are also in a band. Y'know I love how close they are to each other and every one of them has a distinct personality. Cabir is the more expressive one, the flirt if you will; Manik is absolutely the leader with his own parental issues and hides how he feels through his not caring attitude; Mukti is the bindass one who honestly doesn't give a crap what people think of her; Alya is the princess, the eye candy whilst Dhruv is the quiet one and yet possibly is the one who notices everything that happens around him. I'm not saying I like them bullying other students - I don't - but I honestly can't wait for their own personal growth. If the writers do a great job, this show could seriously be a great coming of age youth show.
*I also love Nandini and Navya even if they are quite stereotypical female leads but they have their own perks. Navya is hilarious. I love how filmy she is and is so confident in who she is (yeah Navya may be dressed like a 'behenji' whatever that is, but it seems like she's so confident in herself that she honestly doesn't care about what others think of her. Nandini seems like she's been put into this college without really wanting to be there. I like how she's somewhat the oddball, her links are with science and not music but I think she'll connect with the group through her dance [again not sure whether she's actually fond of dancing unlike her family in the first scene of first episode but It'd be cool to see some growth and laying some common ground].
Also even though I dislike Mukti in the way she bullies people [heck the way all of them do], I like how she represents the modern girl [you know doing what she wants and not letting people walk over her] and even though I'm not condoning this - I like how she controls her own sexuality. She's doing what she wants and not doing things because of pressure.
I'm actually glad Manik and Alya have their own relationship [because considering how wanted Gu Jun Pyo was in BOF, I'm surprised he didn't have a girlfriend or something] - because dating is an aspect of reality - people date, they may or not end up with their first love but that's nothing bad. I can tell Alya likes Manik more than he likes her but like the whole group, they're still possessive of each other.
Finally, I want to say that I'm glad the writers mix up the relationships and get characters mix with other characters - I honestly don't care who ends up with who because it's the ride that I care about [especially with this show] - take a western show for example, do the first loves really always end up together?
I like Dhruv with Nandini but I also can sense her with Manik. Manik and Alya are cute together but I can also sense some angst for when he falls for Nandini. Navya I'm not sure how she'll fit in but I really want her to help Dhruv get out of his shell, she's so outspoken and loud that I just want them to be onscreen together. I also quite like Cabir and Mukti for some reason - both are similar and hilarious together. They'll be a cracking couple. Can we also see some bromance please?
