Magical creatures of indefinable powers they may be, but we are pretty sure that the myths surrounding witch-kind haven't been of their own conjuring, for lack of a better word.
While we've never been believers of the occult, we'd definitely like to SOS for some help, of the magical variety, to dispel these seven myths about witches that we have all been made to believe:
That all witches are scheming, diabolical creatures.
No. If Hermione and the myriad sacrifices she made on Harry Potter's behalf are to be believed, just NO.
That witchcraft has originated from Salem.
If that were true, Salem would be crawling be witches by now - And seeing as they haven't opened up a branch of Hogwarts there yet, we're sure you can understand why we're leaning towards the negative.
That male witches are called warlocks.
Again, zero points for authenticity. The term warlock' is allegedly used to describe one who has been banished from the coven. Just something you should know, before you go about upsetting a male wizard capable of extreme magic by calling him a warlock.
That witches have the cure for every ailment.
We hate to burst your bubble, but we are pretty sure that even if witches did exist, there wouldn't be any ancient bubbling cauldrons involved.
That their incantations involve a lot of gibberish.
While we don't know if the incantations that witches chant necessarily involve hocus pocus, or even its Indianized version - Aabra ka dabra, we are pretty sure that all the gibberish onscreen witches spout is just a trope. A point that we totally intend to prove, the next we run into a practicing witch.
And that they live with cats and ride on broomsticks
Before you ask, no; they don't all wear pointy hats either - What was some witch's idea of a fashion statement has somehow just stuck and been generalized for their entire kind.
That the four elements of nature are where witches source their power from
Which could or could not be true. Although we are guessing that if you do ever come face-to-face with a magical witch, finding out whether she draws her power from the earth, wind, fire, water or some obscure comet in space won't be on the top of your priority list.
