In The Eyes Of The Beholder
Chapter 9
Maan stopped in front of the college and Geet hopped off the bike reluctantly.
"Thanks Diez. Bye Hades. She patted the bike gently.
"Umm... Diez, when do you think I will get to ride on Hades again? My classes end at 5:00 PM today."
She looked at Maan hopefully.
Maan felt a mild sense of irritation at her blind sense of devotion for the lifeless machine under him. He might have considered her request if she had asked him when she could see her new friend, namely him, again.
"I don't know Geet. I'll have to see. I will let you know the next time I get the bike from Praneet Da."
Her face fell at that and he almost retracted his words.
"Oh alright then, I will see you tomorrow at the caf ok?." With that she walked away.
He checked his watch and decided it was too late and too boring to attend a lecture on corporate strategy and was thinking of ways to kill time, when he suddenly saw Miss Mariam Abdul Rehman walking towards him. He wanted to sink into the ground and disappear before she reached him. However, she casually raised her arm and waved at him.
"Oh hello there again."
He smiled at her warily. She sounded pretty normal and seemed to have forgotten the fiasco of the scrap of paper which had accidentally landed on her desk, wrong side up.
"Hello Miss. Mariam."
He felt at a disadvantage and so decided to start with an apology.
"Miss. Mariam, I am sorry about last time. It's complicated..."
She raised her palm in a halting motion, before he could complete the sentence.
"It's ok Mr...?"
"Khurana. Maan Singh Khurana and you can call me Maan."
"Well Maan, you can relax and no explanations are needed. Geet stopped by the other day after you left and umm...explained about that piece of paper. In fact she gave me some flowers and said they were an apology from you."
"Flowers?" Maan gasped and continued nervously. "Did she...did she say anything else about the flowers?"
"Only that you had wanted to give them to me as an apology, but were probably feeling embarrassed to stop by." She grinned at him.
"She is a very sweet girl. She always stops by to chat with me whenever she comes to the library. Is she a good friend of yours, Maan?
Yet again, Maan felt a soft squeeze in his heart at this act of Geet's . As far as she was concerned, the person with whom the library fiasco had happened had been a stranger to her, yet she had gone out of her way, brought flowers for the librarian as an apology on his behalf and explained the situation. He now looked at Miss Mariam and nodded his head emphatically.
"Yes, Miss Mariam. She is most definitely my friend. Thanks for letting me know about all this."
With that he waved her a goodbye and then suddenly decided that he was feeling very generous and would give Geet a ride back on Hades to her hostel after all. He grinned imagining what her reaction would be to that. He decided he might as well go and sit in the classroom and kill time there and wait for her classes to be over. He looked around the canteen for her at lunch time, so that he could offer her the ride, however he did not see her there.
He was greeted time and again by his fair weather friends who were right now avoiding him, as they had realized that he was no longer financially able to sponsor their expensive habits. However, he also knew the reason they had not cut him off their so called friendship list permanently. He was after all, the only son and heir of the mega industrialist and so called royalist Raja Kabir Singh Khurana .
The Singh-Khuranas were a royal family, descendants of the Sisodia dynasty, to which legendry kings like Rana Sangha, Maharana Pratap and Chatrapati Shivji had belonged to. Maan was extremely proud of his warrior lineage, but he did not care for the royalty label. Unlike his father who reveled in the fact that he was royalty and hence considered himself superior to those around him, Sameer, Maan's elder brother had always shown him by example that each man created his own destiny, through his own intelligence and hard work. Sameer had discarded the royal label and Maan had followed in his brother's footsteps. This was also a very sore point between Maan and his father.
He just ignored the people calling out to him, grabbed a sandwich, finished it off and went on to attend his next lecture. He realized that this was the first time he had sat through a full day of classes. To his genuine surprise, he had even found some of them interesting. All his classmates however, had kept on turning and looking at him. Some had even whispered and asked what the great Maan Singh Khurana was doing inside the classroom. One of the professors had asked him if he was a new student, as he had never seen Maan in his class before.
He looked at his watch, it showed 4:00 PM and finally classes were over. He immediately got up and walked out, before he was questioned by any of his classmates and headed over to his bike. He was just wondering where and how he was going to find Geet, when she walked right past him, head bent, muttering something under her breath.
"Geet, Geet." He called out.
She glanced at him vaguely with unfocused eyes, then shook her head and continued walking away.
He hopped on to Hades, gunned the bike and started following her.
"Geet." He yelled loudly this time and pulled up in front of her.
She snapped out of her thoughts and looked up startled at the huge obstruction in front of her. Her eyes focused on the bike and she was back to the present with a bang.
"Hades." she gushed. She stroked her palm over the handlebars of the bike and cooed at it, as if it were her favorite pet. Maan was sure if Hades had been a living thing, he would have wagged his tail and licked her all over the face.
She finally noticed him.
"Diez. What are you doing here?"
"First, you tell me what were you muttering under your breath? I called out to you three times and you did not hear me at all." The unusual inattention had miffed him a bit.
She looked at up him then her eyes shifted away guiltily.
"Geet.. what have you gone and done now?"
"What do you mean now? We only met today morning. When have I ever caused you trouble?"
Maan's mouth gaped at her in astonishment at that statement.
"No Geet, when have you ever caused me trouble? Who was it that was crawling all over my back with her hands this morning?"
She looked down with what Maan thought was guilt, until he saw the tilted corners of her lips. The little minx was not embarrassed at all. She was enjoying this. He pushed two fingers against her forehead to raise it up, but she resisted. The riotous curls that were covering half her face, washed over the back of his hand and he was startled at their softness. He snatched his hand back at the tingling sensation that ran down his arm.
"Geet look at me and tell me what have you gone and done now? What are you doing here so early? You said your classes were not finishing up until 5:00PM.There is still an hour left."
"Weeell," she dragged it out.
"Go on."
"I was feeling drowsy in the History of Arts class and Dronacharya..well his actual name is Professor Verma, but he keeps going on and on and on in the class, basically he keeps droning and he is a teacher right, which also means Acharya. So in my mind I call him Dronacharya. A completely different meaning from the Mahabharata Dronacharya actually. That Dronacharya was the greatest teacher. I'm sure I would have loved to attend his classes."
"Ahhh. Shut up, just shut up. I am leaving Geet. I was about to offer you a ride on Hades, but it seems you are so busy following Professor Dronacharya's footsteps in the droning department that you are not ready to leave yet."
Geet looked at him in awe as if he'd offered her the moon, gave an excited little jump and then promptly dumped her bag on the ground and dug inside. She withdrew a large sketchpad and flipped the pages until she came to what she was looking for.
"You see, our Modern Arts Proff has given us an assignment to capture Geometry in real life." She showed him sketches of triangular buildings, rectangular buses, circular ball in a child's hands; dartboard that she had marked the lines on as radius and diameter. An ice cream cone was the example for a geometric cone. At each sketch she had also written a brief description of the geometrical terms, as in what a triangle was or what radius meant. Finally she came to the last sketch and it was the picture of a man's body from the neck down. It started with the tie knotted there and continued to the hugely rounded belly of the faceless man sitting on a chair. The tie rested on the curve of the belly at just one point and then continued to hang below. Below it was labeled, Perfect example of Tangent line to a curve. Tangent - A straight line that touches the circle at a single given point.'
"Geet whose tangent tie, and circular belly is this?" Maan asked, while he bit his lips hard to stop the laughter that was trapped inside his throat and waiting to escape.
"Dronacharya's. He saw me sketch it and kicked me out of class. I tried explaining that I couldn't resist sketching it when I saw such a prime example for my assignment right in front of my eyes, but he did not care for my explanation." She finished with a pout.
Maan could not control himself after that. He doubled over the bike, laughter bursting out of him uncontrollably. He finally calmed down, looked at the open sketch in her hand and that set him off again. His sides were hurting, his jaw aching and tears of mirth were rolling down his cheeks when he finally brought himself under control. Geet had started giggling in response to Maan's infectious laughter.
"Diez I like the way you laugh. You should laugh more."
Maan looked at her with a soft smile. He had not had anything to laugh about for a long time, but since this crazy girl had stormed into his life he had laughed genuinely more in a day then he had in the three years since his buddy, his hero, his mentor, his only brother Sameer was gone. He looked at her now and gently pushed the soft curls off her forehead.
"Thanks Geet."
"For what Diez?"
"For being here, for making me laugh."
Her bottom lip trembled and tears welled in her eyes.
"Ok stop. Don't start the emotional waterworks. Do you want a ride back or not?"
The tears switched off abruptly and a wide grin spread across her face, as she picked up her bag, stuffed the sketch pad back into it and jumped on the bike.
"Let's go Diez. What are we waiting for?"
