NEW DELHI - The 15-year-old son of two doctors performed a filmed Caesarean section birth under his parents' watch in southern India in an apparent bid to gain a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest surgeon.

Instead, the boy's father could be stripped of his licenses and may face criminal charges, officials said Thursday.

Dr. K. Murugesan showed a recording of his son performing a Caesarean section to an Indian Medical Association chapter in the southern state of Tamil Nadu last month, said Dr. Venkatesh Prasad, secretary of the association. The video showed Murugesan anesthetizing the patient.

"We were shocked to see the recording," Prasad told The Associated Press, adding that the IMA told Murugesan that his act was an ethical and legal violation.

Murugesan owns and runs a maternity hospital in the city of Manaparai, Prasad said in a telephone interview from Manaparai. The family could not be immediately reached for comment.

Murugesan, who could possibly be prevented from practicing and face criminal charges for allowing his son to perform the operation, expressed no regret and accused the Manaparai medical association of being "jealous" of his son's achievements, Prasad added.

"He said this was not the first surgery performed by his son and that he had been training him for the last three years," said Prasad.

Murugesan told the medical association that he wanted to see his son's name in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Prasad said that his team had reported the surgery to the state's top medical association in state capital, Chennai.

State health secretary V.K. Subburaj told reporters Thursday that the government would investigate.

"We'll get the report and then we'll see whether there are any violations ... prima facie it looks like there is a big violation," he said.

"We will definitely take action against the concerned medical officers."

not to mention additional risk presented to the pregnant woman and the unborn. i am sure team of doctors were watching, but a slight hand shake can near critical parts of the body could hurt the child!
The woman who volunteered, the doctor who trained his son and hospital that allowed such should face charges imho. This is disregarding the laws. I dislike it.

No matter what the doctor did and the immature son and whoever else was present but the parents agreed to this? That beats me.

Stupid people *sigh* Really stupid people. How greedy people can get, even at the stake of their unbron baby... This thought really saddens me.

Or was it that the woman did not even know that the surgeon was 15? 😕

What if the final outcome was just coz of sheer luck. The operation could have gone either way. I agree that since all ended well, it might sound like a feat but what if things had gone wrong
It was IMO stupidity to have taken this risk. What do we have medical schools for if training by your doctor parents was good enough?😕

Anshu how can u say that? Odds were against the baby and mother when 15 yrs old is performing surgery . In my previous post I forgot to mention the risk those parents took by letting this 2 doctor parents duping them into agreeing on their 15 yrs old to perform C-section on a pregnant woman. I am livid at this whole story. Totally unacceptable behaviour by mature adults .

i am amazed with the steps taken by these two professionals who allowed their son to practice surgery and i am glad this has come to notice. this raises two questions for me, would you go to some one who is licensed and yet not thorough in his field or would you rather approach a licensed professional but he might not be well read in his field. just a question for debates sake although having license ensure quality of professionals churned out. i would like to know how come these professionals have taken their professions lightly and have been adamant on pinning their son on world record at the expense of an unborn baby. and no woman in the world would take such a furious step but then my comprehension also tells that may be the mother comes from a poor family where she had been lured to be put as subject, hence her name would appear in the corner along with their son. these two doctors have no right to play with someones life for the sake of their son. its surgery for heavens sake and not some art class
