BREAKING WAVES : Part 4

She continuously tapped her fingers over the table while her eyes remained fixed at the entrance of the canteen. It was one of the busiest and cheapest canteens around, certainly not of the standards Maan maintained. The songs being played at the nearest Ganpati mandap, temporarily located in the locality for the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi kept the all the ears busy. The clock indicated the time, she had mentioned as most suitable for their meeting. Her eyes started to zoom in every face that neared the entrance, eliminating one after the other, finally zeroing in over one face for which she had been waiting since last 15 minutes.

She straightened her back, cleared her throat and waved her hand with a smile. It didn't take many seconds for him to recognize her; he removed his glares and walked towards the table she was seated in.

Maan rubbed his hands across his hair, while he looked around at the noisy canteen. It would probably be the last place in the list, if he had selected the place. As if the songs being played at the nearest mandap weren't enough, the fan made sounds of its own, which was anything but pleasant. Geet knew he wasn't very fond of such places, yet she chose one. He wondered why? The bitterness amidst them didn't go unnoticed by either of them. After exchanging a series of Hi s and Hellos, the atmosphere around them turned silent, however the songs around saved them from any kind of and deadly and horrific silence they could have been subjected to. Both had their hesitations and reservations to talk anything beyond work. Geet gathered all the courage she could, overcame all her hesitations with great efforts and decided to speak of something both of them have been avoiding all the time.

"I'm sorry, Maan. Sorry for whatever has happened. However I have behaved and "

Geet couldn't complete her sentence when she looked at him looking at her. She started to stutter and she knew it would happen. She was the one who ended everything that was between them, she was the one who stepped away from everything.

"I guess it's alright! We both have come a long way and nobody is to be blamed for whatever happened years ago." Maan smiled formally.

"So, no questions? You don't demand any answers? No bitter feelings for whatever decisions I have taken?"

Maan glared at her. It was not something perfect for Geet to ask. Their relationship ended on a blurred note and it better remained that way. Any clarifications and discussions would only reinstate the wounds and the associated pain given; both of them have or at least claimed to have moved on.

"The answer lies in your question Geet, for all the decisions you have taken." Maan smiled mirthlessly, "What do you want me to answer, Geet? What new do you want to know? Does it even matter?" Maan asked while sipping the water.

"It does Maan, that's why we are here today."

Maan looked around where people buzzed like bees and songs that left so scope for them to speak quietly and comfortably. Maan rubbed his forehead and looked at the girl sitting opposite him.

"At Such chaotic place where I am hardly audible to you? Do you really want to listen to me?"

"What do you want me to say? How it angers or saddens me that you have never considered me as a part of our relationship? How you took the decisions all by yourself, without giving me a chance to apologize or reconcile? How you just ended everything in a matter of few days?" Maan blurted it all in one go until the realization of his harsh tone dawned over him after a few minutes of his lashing out. He closed his eyes in disbelief over his sudden change in behavior. He had decided to behave his best for the lunch but Alas! He had failed.

Geet remained silent for a while before she spoke, Maan was still the same. Her behavior disappointed him the same way, it did years ago. She really had no answers or explanations for his questions.

"I'm sorry Maan, I don't know if you would ever be able to feel normal about me" She took a pause and looked at him cursing himself for lashing out "No matter how hard you try"

Maan felt apologetic "I'm sorry Geet, that's not what I .." he found himself striving hard to fish for words, to form a sentence which t would help him express himself better, but his efforts failed. He gulped down his saliva and closed his eyes in frustration. Frustrated he was, about himself, for his behaviour, for his inability to express. She kept looking at him and smiled.

The silence between them was neither peaceful nor desirable. It was inevitable. Their parting ways was Geet's decision but behind that moment lied lots of moments of helplessness and weakening ties. Moments where Geet craved for his unconditional support, moments where he craved for Geet's trust. Moments, where both failed to reach each other's expectations. None of them was ready to set things right after the formation of the slight cracks in their relationship. The decision might have been hers, but the actions of both were always taken into consideration. The blame game wasn't something very desirable. This meeting suddenly seemed pointless. Some things are better left uncertain.

Geet took a deep breath and broke the silence. "I think, I should get going"

"This soon?" Maan had not expected such response from her all of a sudden. He held her hand by her palm to stop her from leaving this soon.

Tears welled up in Geet's eyes, "I don't think, there's anything much we could talk Maan. Do you think otherwise?

Maan's heart skipped a beat. He somehow saw this coming. A fun filled lunch was the last thing both of them had expected.

"Geet, can I ask you one question? One last question."

Geet lowered her eyes and nodded her head in approval.

"Would you take the same decision? If something of that sort happens now?" Maan didn't divert his gaze from her even for a fraction of second; he waited for her answer.

"I would never commit in the first place, Maan" came a reply, words spoken without any hesitation or doubt.

"I think I have grown this way Maan, with an inability to commit and with an inability to trust somebody else other than me for life. With something deeply ingrained in my mind that an emotional support system is inherent. No third person can provide it to me. My life has been proving it at every single instance."

She removed his hand from hers, took her bag and stood from her seat "Take care Maan."

She walked away not caring to wipe the tears that blurred her vision. He continued to look at her, till she had disappeared from his vision. He had been instrumental for her to come to such conclusions. For all the love she had given him, instead of helping her to get rid of her shaken beliefs, he had only strengthened them over time. He closed his eyes while the songs being played at the Ganesh Mandap kept ringing in his ears.
